Tho people of road district No. 8,
Geo. M. Wisbart, supervisor, made
move in the right direction, when
they voted a seven mill special tax foi
the improvement of tne Neil Creek
road. They thoroughly understood
when they did this that the county
court would levy a teu mill (ax or as
large a tax as the law allowed tor road
purposes. This making with the sev
en mill special levy, a tax of seven
tee, a mills for tire impiovement of the
county highways. There Is nothing
that will improve any country or any
community as much as good loads.
Ihe entetpiisiug people ot the Upper
Hood Kiver valley realize this, aud
thin euterprlsiug spirit, no doupt,
has doue much to attract the vast
number of people who 1 re now put
ting their money in this tection with
the avowed purpose of making it their
permanent borne. Transportation fa
cilities have long been the barrier to
their progressive advancement. This
is now solved. Railroad transporta
tion to the beait of the Upper Hood
Kiver valley is uow an assured thing.
This with the good roads the people
are determined to have, will make
this one of the most attractive spots
ot our great valley.
Good roads is the oue thing that
Hood Kiver needs. It U tfie one thing
we must have at any cost. Good
roads should be our buttle cry. Ev
erybody should assist the county couit
iu building good loads. Every dis
trict should follow the example of
road distriot No. 8, and vote some
special tax to further the extension of
good roads. The wealthy road dis
tricts near town cannot afford to let
the outlaying distrlota iu the Upper
Hood Kiver valley take the lead iu
anything that has so much to do with
advanced civilization, as good roads.

HIGH SCHOOL FORMALLY OPENED

An event of much interest was the
dedication of the new . high tobool
buildnig Saturday evening, and in
iplte of the Inclement weather there
was a good crowd in attendance.
The exeioises weie held in the as
sembly hall, which extends the whole
length ot the north halt of the upper
stoiy, making an ideal place for liter
ary and other entertainments in line
with educational work.
The meeting, was called to order nt
7:30 p. in. by Prot. E. E. Coad, coun
ty aud city superintendent 01! schools.
The tirst number on the program was
the singing of America by the au
diouce, with Miss Newtown at the
piano. State Superintendent Acker
man was then introduced, who made
au iuteretiing address of twenty or
thirty minutes. He said in part:
"1 have been looking forwaid to
this event for niueteon years, and fif
teen years ago 1 said that Hood Kiver
would have a school system that
would be second to none in the atate.
I always feel that Hood Kiver ii like
home, as it was the first plaoe I aet
foot on Oregon aoil when I oame weat.
"The people of Hood Kiver should
be congratulated on this maguiliceut
building. You have built tor the fu
ture. 1 predict that you will have in
five or ten years 000 high school stu
dents. You will have a room set
apart for the teaching ot domestio sci
euce, where the young ladies will
learn to keep the home iu the very
best way. You will have auuther
room set apart tor manual trainlug,
where will also be taught elementary
horticulture.
"The high school should not in
fringe ou the pure college couises,
but lead up to them, so that tho grad
uate tioru the high school can go di
rect to college, or it it is desired to
stop there, will be well equipped in
education for the world' battle. You
can build up a high school here equal
to Portland.
"The high school wai first develop
ed iu the Willamette valley. Ten
years ago there were only five cities
in the state that had a four-veer
course of study. There waa no law
at that time authorizing a high school
system. The Oregonian advocated
that there should be no free educa
tion above the eighth grade, main
taining that if a student got that , far
ana was interested ue or sue would
get the rest at the higher places of
(learning. That paper fought the high
souool ao bard in Portland twenty-live
years go, when the walla were up for
the building that the oitizeua were
unable to vote a tax to complete it.

for 35 years, but at last said to me,
'You have beaten me out.' He ia
now a loyal supporter of the high
school system.
"Eight years ago we suoceeded in
getting 11 bill through the legialature
authoilzing distrlota by a vote of the
people to tench grades above the
eighth. We weie to fearful ot asking
too muoh and not getting anything, on
acoouut of the opposition, tbut the
bill did not oover enough ground.
and no mention wat made of a high
sohool in the bill. At the next ses
sion the bill was amended with the
words high school in it, and broaden
ed its scope.
"In Luue county six districts came
in and organized a Jbiiib sohool dis
trict. It ia plan whloh will be follow
ed ni many places. In the oragnizing
ot high school.distilcts state Hid can
be secured. II the aonoola did uotn
iug more than keep children at home
between the ages of "14 aud 18, it
would pay. That ia the time when
the children need careful looking ut
ter. It is a time when the parents
should know where they are, and es-
peoally iu the evening after sohool
boms.
"1 wish to relate 11 n .incident that
happened a couple of years ago. While
walking down Broadway, Mew York,
with a tiieud from this state, we saw
some beautiful red apples in a win
dow. They were selling at two for 20
cents 1. remarked that they must he
Hood Kiver apples, and also felt sure
they must be from Hood Kiver Up
ou investigation, we found they were
from Hood Kiver and had the label nn
the box"

from tho Uirls' Olee Club, which, waa
neartuy encored.
Kev. J. U. late gave one of bla
obaraoterlstio enthusiastic addresses,
full of good advice tor the boya aud
girls, and while he occupied more
time than bia predecessor, It waa lis
tened to with marked attention to the
close. Kev. Tate is an orator ot more
than ordinary ability, and one of the
favorites of Hood tuver s many elo
quent speakers. His remarks were
practical, Intersperse- wltn lessons
from the Divine teaobiugs, and left
au.impression for good upon his hear
ers. Then followed a pretty exercise by
eight vouug ladies of the high school.
Kaoh bad a large oatd with the Urst
litter of the names of the celebrated
antiquities on the building, and eaub
recited a short verse or history of
the celebrated man whose achieve
ments have made for him a plaoe in

After a song by the Glee Club the
orowd dispersed. The new building
will be occupied by the high school
next Monday, and th se looms now
being held iu churches aud other
places arouud town will be quaitered
in the old Park street school.
