Ibfoed iStatiin in . Transit
Our Fall Line of Ladies' Suits and Coats and Children's Coats was robbed in
transit and almost half of it stolen. It breaks the line of sizes, and as they were
not careful in replacing the goods in the box they are slightly mussed, and for
this reason we are making a very attractive price on the lot. Call in and look
them over. You will appreciate every article as a bargain : : : :

meant tbe failure ot fall wheat to

view of this possibility, au estimate
that the value of 24 hours' ruiu in

Palouse no rain had fallen siuce May,
at Wenatohee tbe last waa fully two
months ago, while at Harrington the
earth was dry even deeper thau a
plow would cut. Beside this, with
tbe heavy grain hauling, tbe roads
throughout this section had become
deep with dust, in plaoes so much so
that travel was practically suspended
except 'n uigeut cases. This bas
been remedied by tbe rain.

Compared with barrelled slock, hp

bringing good prices. Mrst lines are

reoeipti aro running so much lo ordl

poor fruit around. It is surprising
that in the face of so heavy ipeeipta
that uo glut occurred or that a sharp
break did n"t occur. Receipts were
close to 150 cars this week. The
movement baa been steady all son sou
ad tbe docks hare cleaned op pretty
well each day. One of the officials
said that they were in better shape
this season than they had been last
as at no time had there been sorioni
glut this year. Tbe Hudson river
fruit baa about wound up and as tbe
bulk of this waa of tbe ordinay and
inferior grades receivers were glad to
tee it out of tbe way. Theie was a
better demand for export aod i s tbia

the marketl on Al fruit was in excel

Is beiug stored that there is little letl
for tbe local demand. Tbe Jewish
holidays early this woek and those
following next created a better call
aud any good Hues of fruit were rap
idly snapped up.
The supply of red fruit whioh has
been smaller than the demand waa
rapidly cleaned up. Some lines wete
woimy and showed poor color. There
is a good call tor soft fruit, on the
dock (Jieeings have been bringing
growers some good money aud con

Western Mew lork fruit can be
bought for about tbe same nrice aa
the boxed which is about one-third

Receipts last week were heavy and
they ran considerably ahead of tbe
same week a year ago. In all 80.66'.)
bbla were received, while duiing the

reached 68, 278 bbls. Tbe season also
shows cousideiable advance over last

1,104, lGi bbla. were received while
the same period a year ago showed
915,012 bbla.
Repoits not only from western Nsw
Vork bu' from other apple producing
sections iudioate that the recent
drouth baa done cmsiderable damage
and that the total output will be cur
tailed. The inquiry which apple
growers in tbe far West ate mailing in
tbe hast Indicates that are soeklug au
outlet in eastern markets. Many of
the large growers feared they would
have strong competitiou from eastern
fruit and did not expect a very good
trade this year Things now look
more favorable, lu western New
York there ia more desire shown to
purchase fruit thau some time ago.
The alarm over the shortage in the
orop was lespoueihle for tbo activity.
Ibe lotd sbipmeut ot fruit from
Mont roi l and Qtiebpo for lust week
reached 51,524 bbls. aud '2,260 boxes.
Compared with tbe same week a yiar
ago those llgures show a fulling oft as
54 900 bbls. aud 1,911 boxes were ex
ported.
The export movement of apples from
New York waa very light this week in
cousequeuce ot the Hudson river fruit
being mostly marketed. Shipments
from other American ports were
heavy. The latest reports from
Liverpool indicate au eisy foreign
market and little or uo demand for
a green fruit. Quotations on Hudson
liver apples were 9 at 14s. Ked apples
are most lu demaud i brohd, but the
market for these is somewhat easy in

"The self-suppcrting woman in

every woman ia supposed to be cbic

Eggs is Egg
Let as sing the praise of, tbe Great
American Hen, who during the past
year, may well have cackled with
pride over tbe production of nearly
one billion three hundred million
dozen of eggs! Do you realise what
that means? Well, Ii ten:
If, instnad of remaining quietly 'it
home in Iowa, she had chosen to dem
onstrate her powers to the universe at
large, the Hen might have laid those
eggs, each two iuobes loug, end to
end, in a continuous chain rc: cbiug
238,813 miles to the moon, back i gain,
aud then more thau hail way i.iuund
tbe world for good measure a total
of 492,424 miles of eggs ! 1'urther

A Protest in The Aiame or Humanity.
Noting tout tbe season bas again ap
proached to which the pernioious hab
it ot rat dropping is indulged in, and
ohserring already some instances f
the kind, a few words upon tbe sub
ject may not be untimely. In the
first place it is a reprehensible act for
one to carry away cats and little de
teuteless kitteua and drop them along
the wnyside and in front of other peo
ple's houses.
To say the very least ot it, it is
shirking one's own's responsibilities
and throwing them npou his neighbor
a selfish thing to do in any event
to say nothing of tbe sufleriug en
tailed thereby upon a defenceless and
Innocent little animal; tor it is pre
sumable to say that every family who
will keep a oat ia already provided
with as many as they want, and cats
so left frightened and helpless sel
dom Hud homes, or even a rude shel
ter from inclement weather, which
tbe cat Is by nature not fitted to en
dure. Pew people there ate who are
willing to shoulder other people's bur
dens, and few indeed who will take in
an animal thrust upon their bounty;
excusing themselves with tbe thought,
"It ia not any of mine,'" and so tbe
helpless creature ia driven about to
endure both cold and hunger until
death more merciful than we- at
last releases it. Is it not vastly more
merciful to diepatoh as quickly and
painlessly as possible little kittens as
soon as tbey are born than to treat
them in the cruel manner just stated?
Every one is in a manner, Jrespons
ible for all animals that come to them
and every family ought to care for as
many helpless aud inuocent ones aa
their means will allow, especially so
useful an animal as tbe cat. That
wisest of mau, King Solomon, roigued
his horse aside so as uot to disturb a
oolony of those small creatures, tbe
ants; aud in reply to the questioning
look of surprise in the eyes of the
Queeu of Sheba, answered: "The
great should always protect the
weak." Why should we allow a king
to be more compassionate and mag
nanimous than ourselves? We are
poor indeed, both in purse and heart
wbo cannot afford to provide for one
or more oats and a dog Let both our
purses and our hearts be open to
these helpless oreaturea dependent up
on our bounty end whom it has
pleased an All wise Father to create,
aud surely we will never be poorer for
it. Blesaiugs oonie from kindness and
love, and there ia ao occult signifi
oatioe lu the proverb "It is more
blessed tc give thau to receive" a
bidden meaning which few understand
but which all would do well to seek
out. lu the worda of the "Ancient
Mariner :"
"He livetb best who loveth best,
All things both preit and small,
For tbe dear tU d wbo lovetb us
He made and loveth all."
