TELLS OF CANINE ANO
FELINE LIFE HERE
The October number of tbe Sunset
Magazine contains a story of much
local interest from tbe pen of John
CraJlabaiiKQ. The stoiy ii written
in Jobn'a inimiublu'tityle and is es
ioiiows:
Doctor Carn, of Hood Rivr,
Orfgon, owna a do2. Mr Hart mess,
also of Hood Hirer, own a cat.

Tbe do; houbts of uo bigb bi ru soci

language, juist a yeller dog t he cat
on the other baud, is au aristocrat,
being of that biue-gray color which
Indicates tbe genuine Maltese, though
It may be only a Maltese cross He
is of maguillceut proportions as to
frame, loug of limb, Uexibe ot joiur,
"elvet footed in peae hut a telegraph
message with hair on it, tbe cylinder
of a threshing maobine done in gray,
a cyclone with a swelled tail, or auy
HtUe tbiug of thut kind, when engag
ed iu active pursuits.
Between the Guru's dog and the
barttness's cat, -in addition to the
street, is a long standing tued. Wheu
either of them feels lonesome, or pines
for tbe good old days in tbe inlulug
camps that we now Joan only read
about, he makes au incursion to tbe
other's territory.
Saturday, Cain's dog felt blue. He
bad cbused eu old ben, helping bim
self oocasionly to a mouthful of
feathers until be was as full as a tick,
and, having notbiug else to relieve
tbe monotony ot tbe tedious after
noon, be oust bis gaze over Into tbe
enemy's territory. The gate was open
and tbe Maltese evidently was off
duty. Here was an opportnity not to
be uegleoted. He waUed over, and
after reoonnoitering for a few mom
ents he sauntered in. He was on
dangerous ground now. He pro
ceeded cautiously and slowly, but
gained boldness at every step, as bis
bated enemy did not appear. The
Maltese was curled up taking hU af
ternoon nap, never dieaming that au
insignificant yaller dog would try t
play him for a tioer. "Tbe best laid
schemes of mien and men," and also
of venturesome dugs, often result in
their undoing.
A lady, visiting the Bartmess resi
dence, came in and walked around
tbe bouse. Tbe dog with a guilty
conscience, knowing be was where be
bad no business, struck for the gate.
It was closed. With a despairing
hill, be poked his head through be
tween tbe pickets and tiied to crowd
his trightened body after it. Like
some political pushes, it woulden't
work. He bad too many feathers in
him. Then be made a frightened
lurcb back thut nearly took his ears
off, but be found, as tbe country edl
tor's epitaph said, "We are here to
stay." As be could not move, he
raised bis voice in lusty lamentations,
longingly to bear bis beloved master's
voice. This was poor geneialsbip.
Had be remained still, some one
would have eventually released him,
but bis sixteen to one music only
disturbed tbe slumbers of tbe Maltese,
which rose with a start and at once
proceeded to investigate tbe infernal
diu goiug on at the portal of bis do
main. He discovered tbe dog and
realized that bis private grounds bad
been invaded while be slept. His
eyes flashed, tbe blood ot ten thous
and or more illustiious ancestors
surged through his veins, bis tail re
sumed the dimensions of a dynamo,
and tbe lady, .those attention bad
been drawn by the dog's expressions
of regret, saw a blue raiubow mid
hoard a thud as tbe Maltese slid
tnrough the air and impinged on the
huiricuue deck of the pillori d canine.
Then t here wus nmsio iu tbu air, a
sound of levelry, all furnished by the
dog, the Myltese clawing tbe keys and
running tbe s1 ale up aud down tbe
pup's back iu a way that would have
made Paderewski green with envey.
Never a cat had such uu opportunity
before. Never a dog bad so much
of bis earthly troubles behind him.
Tbe dog's oall for assistance became
momentarily more vigorous, until
tbe air pulsated with tbe musio of
bis fears, and the sound was as though
a city dog pound bad set op a joint
and several death chant. Finally,
with a mighty backward surge, that
bead thit didn't know enough to get
itself out of trouble was yanked from
between tbe pickets with suoh force
that most of the deg's hair and all of
bis berk was left there, aud with a
gladsome wbiniper he leaped the fence
and fled for home Ho was fust when
in tbe gate but he was faster a great
deal as be struck the ground on tbe
tbitber side of the fence and realize 1
that there was uo place like borne.
The cat wutohed biui gain bis own
territory, then went back to tbe
woodshed nnd npent. 'J.o leinainder of
the afternoon iu ticking tbe dog
meat and bair frcm between his teeth.
The dog crawled under tbe bouse;
bis thoughts, if tie had them, were
probably like those of "Kostns:"
"I Illume no licRrt. uo love, no fBte,
And 1 bavo uolhirg to forgive,
1 wish for naught, rorcut for
naught,
IiV0
Dislike naught bnt to live.

tlitn then tbe skin cures itself. You

festered Hound.
Tbe nest skin specialists today are
agreed that tbe only way to cure the
skiii is inroiign uie skin.
The fait that eczi ma is a skin disease
and not a blood disrase is evident from
statistics winch show that nearly all
eczema sufferers are eifealy healthy iu
all other ways except as to their skin.
If the eczema patients were really suffer
ing from an inward malady, the entire
body and not only the skin would be
diseased
You can prove immediately the relief
of a trua skin cure by usinj oil of win
tergreen as compounded in D. D. D.
Prescription.
This liquid attacks the disease germs,
numbing them while bnildin up the
healthy tissue of tbe skin. We have
now haudled this meritorious and thor
oughly scientific remedy for so long and
have seen its reliable result so many
times that we freely express our confi
dence. Kier&Cass.

many reservations have been made
for space in tbe various contests, that

additional buildings and tbe enter
prise will now be allowed to grow to
the limit of tbe increased accommo

Keep a Written Account
Of All Your Expenditures
You know from experience it is hard to save
from yonr earnings but it can be done if you
set your heart and head in that direction. The
only way to do it is to keep an account of
what you earn and what you spend.
The simplest way to keep this record is to
have a bank account deposit your money
with this bank and pay all bills by check.
Your bank book and returned checks are the
record you want they will tell the story of
your money both earned and spent.
Now would be the proper time to begin.
