At meeting held by the members of
the Uood liiver and White Salmon
legal profession Sutuiday the forma
tion of a local bar association wsa dis
cussed and steps taken to perfect a
permanent organization. A. J. Derby

the association and Ernest U. Smith,
secretary. Aoothor meeting and a
banquet will be beld durlug the fruit

constitution and by-laws and organize

of Laraway's jewelry store Wednesday

most beautiful sight.

WINS AT THE DALLFS
Tbe eighteenth annual fair of tbe
Second Kastern Oregon District open
ed Tuesday witb much target at
tendance than in previous years. Tb
exhibition pavilions were well filled
on the opening day. A much luig
orowd than formerly attended tbe
noes at tbe fair grounds Tuesday
Eighty blocks of business bouses on
Secood street, tbe main thorough'
fare of tbe city, are adorned with
strings of electric lights and otber
decorations, and streets are crowded
witb visitors. While this was tbe re
gular entry day, most of tbe exhibits
were already in place, both at tbe big
pavilion on Washington street and at
tbe fair grouods, west of tbe city,
where tbe showing of stock, poultry,
swine, sheep, eta, is being made.
Races will be tbe feature of tbe
traok programme for the remaining
days of tbe fair, Wednesday, Thurs
day, Friday and Saturday. Preceding
tbe races 20 Yakima Indinas gave a
war-danoe and concert was given by
Tbe Dalles band, nnder the direotion
of Professor Poling. Tbe baud gave
concerts every afternoon at tbe track
and in tbe evening on tbe streets
down town.. A carnival company will
be big evening attraction during
fair week.
A mule race, tbe seven drivers in
which will be prominent men of Wasco
County, ii a feature of the track
program for Thursday, and on tbe
following day a track and Uel.1 meet
wid be held, teams representing lbe
Dallse and Uood River High School
having been entered. A team made
out of athletes trout the Sherman
County scboo's was to have competed,
but withdrew, leaving but two con
tenders for a silver loving cup. The
winners of first places in the track,
and jHeld events will beceive gold
medals, silvei and bronze medals
going to tbe winners of second and
third ploes, respectively.

Failure of the governing machinery
to work on the big dynamo of tbe
Oregon Lumber company at Its power
plant at Dee last week run away and
canted trie dynamo to wrick the plant.
Part ot tbe 10 ton flywheel was thrown
across the river a distance of several
nunared feet. One hundred and Ufty
iiihn are out oi employment as a re
sullt of tbe accident.

in tbe vicinity of tbe plant no one
was iujuied. The plant cost D0,000
