The liig Apple Sale.
What brains and progress applied
to Oregon tesouroes cau do, was
emphasized yesterday at Hood River,
says tho Oreguu Journal. A sale cf
$!)0,J0O worth of apples is tho Inci
dent. Tho buyer sought the fruit,
and is happy la its possession.
"These apples have created a market
that cannot be tilled by the fruit of
any other district," ho said. "Hood
Kiver is the pivotal point around
which buyers revolve for the II nest
grade of apple stock anywhere in the
world, aud we and other llrrua know
it. Theie is uo section where the
apple crop aud the prices for it are
eo carefully wvtched as Hood River,
It seoms surprising that such a com
paratively small crop ot arp.es as li
grown here cuts such a big figure in
the apple world, but it is accounted
for by the fact that dealers every
where recognized that Hood River
apples ate the absolute standard of
xcelleuce in quality and pack."
(jranting that tho buyer's posses
sions of 90,000 worth of such apple
may inUuenco somewhat his roseate
view of Hood River stocks the faot
ot t tie sale is still proof of bis state
ment. It is the Hist large sale of
tue reason and the figure is "highly
s isfactory'' to the growots. No
other such sale has been made on the
coast, aud probably not iu the
country. it sets Hood Rivet pro
ducts, Hood River methods and Hood
River operutors before the country
as models in the industry.
The condition is more than mere
Mipuinrity of location. iMntiy fruit
expei Is claim other districts ol OregGu
are equally well adapted to the in
dustry. Hut Hood River h is applied
intelligence. Growers there have
pioneered the way iu use of eulightfn
e J method-". Thoy threw aside the
ox yoke and flail methods lung ago.
They studied the business as the
banker studies bis saccouuts. They
sought information from every source,
They read, and now read the bulletins
of all the agricultural colleges In
the country, They do not reject new
ideas, because father and grandfather
did't do it that way. They have
invoked and availed of everything
that promised success. As a result,
their apple go to the rich, and the
Hood Kiver people pluck the profit.
Other Oregon industries should study
the game.
Organize Tart Hub.
A meeting to organize a Taft and
Sherman Republican Club was held
last Wednesday evening in tba city
Hall The meeting was the result of
tho efforts ot M E. Williamson, chair
man of the Republican oentral com
mittee of the second Oregon cougrei
siuual dsitrict, who is organizing Re
publican clubs throughout the state.
Mayor L. N. lilowers was selected aa
chairman ot the meeting, which waa
well attended. A preliminary organ
ization was formed by electing J. L.
Carter presldeut and J. M. Scbmeltzer
secretary. Plans for the coming cam
paign were discussed and arrange
ments made for receiving and dis
tributing literature. The sentiment
of tho meeting was in favor ot work
ing through the Republican State Cen
tral Committee. The organization
starts oft with a membership of about
75 and a meeting of the olub will be
called later by the presideut and a
constitution and by-laws adopted.
M. M. HILL SELLS 16
ACRES FOR $16,000
The most notable'sale ot apple land
that baa ever been made In the State
of Oregon took place last week when
County Commissioner M. M. Hill dis
posed of teu aores ot 7-year-old bear
iug trees for fKi.OOO. Aa there are no
buildings of any kind on the tract
the prioe is a straight one of 1 1,000
per aoro and is the highest that has
ever been paid for orchard land in the
state.
Tho purchaser is Frank K. Deem, of
(Jalva, Illinois, who left here last Fri
day for that place, where he will close
up his business and ootue to Hood
Rivet to live. It la his intention to
erect buildings, it possible, on his
newly acquired property this fall.
The tract bought by Mr. Deem is
part ot the fifty aores act to orchard
by Mr. Hill on his One property near
Vau Horn Station and la in Newton
and Spitzeubergs.J Although the buy
did not iuulu-ie this year's crop it Is
considered a good oue for the pur
chaser as the trees on Mr. Hill's place
have demonstrated both this year
and last that they are remarkably tine
yielders aud are just reaohing an age
where they will pay a return of many
times over on the investment.
News of the salebaa caused wide
spread interest all over the state and
orchard men are predicting that bear
iug;orobards will sell for a much high
er prioe per acre at Hood River in
side ot a year.
UNION SELLS ANOTH
ER LOT OF APPLES
The Directors ot the Apple Growers
Union consummated another import
ant apple sale here this week when
they aold ten can of apples which
ffill go to Texas and New York. The
fruit was sold at the Union's quota
tions and consists of Wagners, Jona
thans. Lawrers, lialdwlus, Mammoth
lilack Twigs, Rhode Island Greenings
and Huow apples.
The shipment will comprise about
7,000 boxes and with the other apples
that have been sold by the Union
markets about half the quantity of
apples which that organization will
handle this year. The sale Is con
sidered a good one particularly the
shipment that has been taken by
Texas buyers who are In the market
tor more fruit but are nut just yet
prepared to take a bigger supply. It
is iieiloved that the wider the distri
bution of Hood River Iruit the blggre
the demand for it will be aud under
the present plans of the Union it will
be possible to hold aud distribute it
to tho best advantage at the highest
prices.
it is stated that the entire lot of
apples still unsold could be placed
at a protiiable figure aa negotiations
for them have been keen by big buy
ers iu Chicago nnd other cities. Thoy
have offered, however, a slightly re
duocd figure from what the Union
has scheduled to receive for them and
until a more satisfactory prioe is
oflered they will not be sold.
The market for fancy apples In
better now than it waa several weeks
ago aud indications are that it will
grow better as the season advaaoea.
the block ot apples just sold Include
all of some of the varieties and in
stallments of others.
Apples Firm at Sew York.
Advices from western New York
stato this week are that the market in
the growing sections ia becoming
quite firm at per barrel for flue
apples. Towards the end of the week
nous'derablo business was being done.
The Packer did not har that Jany
sales were being made above f'2,
The market here waa fairly steady
and good fruit was in demand. Fanoy
Alexanders sold well at to $3.00
and Gravenstein, Twenty Ounce, York
Pippin and other such varieties at
2 2r to ?2 7ii. Kings brought 82.50
to $3 The abovo prices are for choice
to fancy fruit, aud there was a great
deal ot poor stock offered which aold
at from freight chart gs up.

rooma to discuss the proposed auto
monbile road between Hood River
aud Portland. The meeting waa ad
dressed by Lewis Russell, obaiiman
of tho good roads committee of the
automobile club of Portland ; E. F.
Cannoo. tbe well kuown constructing
engineer, of Portland. ; P. M. Hall
Lewis, engineer ot Hood River; A.
L. Gillette, ot Lot Angeles; R. P.
Loom Is, of tbe New York commission
firm of E. P. Loomis i, Co., who ia
interested with Mr. Wood worth in a
large fruit ranch in the Mt. Hood
district, and . L. Smith, J. Adrian
Kpplng and D. L. Davidson.
In addition to a discussion ot the
automobile road between here and
Portland, Mr. Russell and Mr. Cannon
devoted oonaiderable time to the
matter of road building in the valley,
lloth of these gentlemen have bad
considerable experience in building
good roada and stated that with the
exoellent material at band they
thought that if properly bandied
many of the roids In tbe valley oould
be put in excellent shape by being
oiled, which would oost from $100 to
$150 per mile and would keep them
in good condition fronija yearto two
years. Mr. Cannon, who bad been
for a ride In tbe valley, atated that
one of the reasons foi poor loada in
many parts of the valley was that they
were not properly drained. This ho
said waa one of the most important
features of maintaining a good road
and that by ditobingtbem so as to
drain the water from underneath, in
stead of allowing it to run off the
surface tbe road would not be out up
and left full of ruts and chuck holes.
To build a permanent road he said
that a rock crusher waa indispensable.
With tbe great quantities of rock and
other fine road.making material with
which the valley was supplied, he said
Hood River oounty oould have tbe
finest and most cheaply constructed
permanent roada in tbe state. Tem
porarily, however, if the county want
ed to put the roads in good shape
they could bo properly graded, ditch
ed aud oiled and kept that way com
paratively small expense until perma
nent roada oould replace them. Speak
ing frankly, he said that Hood River
bad the worst roada he had been over
tot a community that had much
good material to make good roada of,
and thought that the matter was one
that ought to be taken up at onoe for
tba good of the oounty at large.
Hall-Lewis told of the great benefits
that would accrue to Hood River by
tbe building of the Hood River-Port
land auto road and gave some inter-
ostiug facta iu connection with the
preliminary investigation that had
been made in regard to its construc
tion. He stated that he waa willing
to give his time in aiding tbe propo
sition and thought tbe road between
here and Cascade Locks ought to be
built In any event, aa it would con
nect tbe lower part of the county with
a wagon road, which was not only es
sential but necessary.
A. L. Gillette, a Lot Angeles man,
told what California was doing in the
good-roada line and said if the road
between here and Portland waa built
it would be the finest scenio highway
on tbe Paclflo coast, and mean that a
thousand tourists and other visitors
would come to Hood River where we
now bad one.
R. P. Loomis said that liood River
grew the finest apples put upon the
markets of the world and waa attract
ing many eastern men with money to
go into tbe apple Industry. lie had
visited all the other seotiona In the
United States, but they were not in
it with Hood River as a place to make
a borne and grow tba finest fruit at
the hiiihest prices known in tbe world.
He believed that there was nothing
more essential to tbe good of the
Hood River district than good roads,
and with Its great scenic splendors, a
grand climate and opportunities in
the fruit bulsness, an improvement
in tbe roada meant thousands of
dollars to the valley, and waa the
most important issue before its res
idents. E. L. Smith atated that Hood River
was known as oue of the most progres
sive communities in tbe state, and
be believed tbat if it took up tbe new
road matter, with tbe help that
was assured it from Multnomah ooun
ty, that it would be built. While it
was developing rapidly and big re
turns were received here from the
various industries, a large part ot the
people of tbe valley were under con
siderable expense on account of tho
various projects tbat were being taken
up. lie was in favor of be road and
thought that it would be one of the
finest things that oould be done to
