that has a 2 inch discharge aud a 4

to an elevation of 300 feet over a dis
tance ot l,2o0 feet at the rate ot 42,-
000 gallons a day. To bold the water
for distributing purposes a cement
leservoir containing 600 barrels will

Puts Straw on Dusty Itoads.
Farmers are selling to Walla Walla
county straw at 1 per load for use on
the dusty roads. Supervisor Stock
dale is having hundreds of loads of
the harvest chat)' spread upon the
highways iu his district, wbiob is
easily the most dusty section of the
county where grain is growu. For
the straw he issues orders on the
county road fund aud hires teams to
draw t trom the fields to the reads
and men scatter about 40 loads to the
mile. Iu this way the highways are
put iu good coudition foi the heavy
hauling of grain and farmeis are sav
ed a great deal of wear and tear ou
their stock aud wagons.
Uutil this year thera has beeu but
little trouble to get all the straw
uecded for tbo hauling, but farmers
seem to be wise aud demand the usual
price from he county as from an in
dividual. In some places strav has
to be hauled quite a distance, beoause
farmera owning adjoiuiug land have
already sold their entire surplus of
straw to livery stables in the oity.

about ptices for apples. It is said
that many dealers will refuse to ban-

What about prices? -e confess we
would not say as to prices that's out
of our Hue. But we can safely say tbat
prices ought to be oo a better basis
than they were last year. Prices were
too high oonsideriag the character
of stuff packed. And then there was
a great bullaballoo iu tbe papers last
all about bigh-prired apples, until
the consumers became frightened and
satisfied their appetites with some
other fruit than apples. Tbe demand
for apples was shut oil at tbe begin
ning of tbe season.
Let's not get things ou an innaiea
basis this year. Don't pack the
cheap, shoddy stuff. Put op only
good apples aud u tney can ce
brought to the consumer ai anyining
like fair prices the demand will equal
the supply.

HdOD RIVER 0 LACIER, TflOitfiDA?. SEPTEMBER 10, lG0iL
CLARKSTON HAN'S
IDEA OF HOOD RIVER
From tbe Clarkitoo Republic .we
take tbe following communication,
which tbiuk will prove interesting
readiug to residents here;
I have been at llnod Kiver. I have
found that they can teach as tome
thing ran teach ua something that it
la dollars iu our pockets to know. It
is the way tbey have done to raise
their land value to tbe point that
man tbat owned 10 acres five years ago
which was worth six or seveu hundred
dollars bas now a piece of property
worth oine or ten thousand.
1 have a cousin who is a fruit grow
er at Hood Kiver and it was be who
gave me tbe inside of it. It seems
tbat tbey make a rule iu tbe valley
that when a stranger comes there tbey
tell bltn ootbing but tbe good things
and leave bim to Hod out the others.
Tbey make it a rule to boost all tbe
time on tbe outside aud to outside
people and if tbe moth aud the scale
bother tbem more than ordinary they
may talk about it to eaob other, but
tbey don't tell strangrra their trou
bles. If a stranger asks a Hood Kiver
man bow things are be is told that
things are all right -thst his profits
were so and so last year, or if his
profits were not much laft year he
tells what be expects to make next
year, tbe result of tbia system is
tbat strangers are fighting at Hood
Kiver to buy land at in some oases as
much aa ten times tbe prices of five
years ago. 1 have an dea tbat if
every man in Lewiston and Clirkston
and Vineland would do as tbey do in
Hood Kiver we could double tbe pi ioe
ot every aore we own.
there is just one tblug more. On
the train 1 was talking to a business
man from Portland wbo was up at tbe
time of the Poitland exouicion. He
told me be bad been looking for a
ohauce to buy some fruit land for bis
sou. lie bad thought of making a
buy at Claikstoo, but be found that
they had too much frost there. He
said tbat pretty muon every mau be
met told him it was a losing game.
The growers wbo told bim these
things, perhaps, didn't think that
they were simply advertising their
own property as being no good.
One thing you can bet on and that
is tbat there is at least one Vlnelander
wbo from now forward will never
make a kneok talk to a stranger.
When any man asks me about frosts
I'll tell him we have tbem but we
have ao many more years without
frost that the frost loss doesn't great,
ly matter. And tbat'a'a faot, too, for
even Hood Kiver (though no one on
the outside knows it) bas a greater
frost loss than we have.
Now don't tor a minute think that I
advocate anyone's lying about things.
I don't mean anything ot tbe kind.
What I mean is tbat we have more
good things to say about our distriot
than Hood Kiver men or those of auy
other fruit section iu tbe country cau
say about theirs. As a matter of fact
we bave less frosts, less pests and less
everything that's bad than any other
place. What 1 mean Is tbat we should
get in and tell people tbe good poiuts
aud not bowl about tbe bad things.
If people coming to the district tu
buy are told about all tbe bad things
and uo one tells them anything about
the good things be certainly will buy
somewhere else. We musn't forget
that tbe muie rapidly tbe district is
settled up tbe quicker our property
will grow iu value. vtnelaudor.
