GEO. CHAMBERLAIN
Mufiier, Oregon
News of tbe eastern apple market
taken from tbe Fruit Trade Journal
for tbe past week ia as follows:
Offerings ot apples were liberal dur
log tbe eaily part ot tbe week, bat
tbe fiait waa of extremely Irregular
quality and value, aud prices ruled n
buyers :a for. utter oneringa irom
western New York were lighter, and
ttere waa a flrmei tone in toe market.
Mct ot the frnlt from tbat section of
the state sold, however, at from $1.75
to 02.25, but lurge fruit in lull sized
packagea brought more money. Tbe
demand for choice to fancy fruit baa
been good, and it waa only on these
grades tbat Ibe market made an Im
provement, tbe trade in the irregular
grades continuing dull. Uood red
fruit sold generally at trow VI to t.i
per barrel, and Green at from t'i to
2. 75.
Reports fiom tbe pioducing dia
trlota are to tbe effect tbat tbe deal la
progreadug very slowly. It waa the
buyers wbo lost tho mouey last year
and not tbe farmers, and tbe latter
are now lairly well supplied witb oash
in the state, Hud are not seemingly
willing to sell ot the piioea which
buyers teel tbat tbey oau afford to
offer. Some report bave been re
ceived at from Lock port to tbe eltect
tbat some buyera tbeie lire offering
fi to 12 35 for Duchess and like tall
vaiieliea, this applying, however, to
baireied fruit. At these figures it
would seem tbat buyera in tbat sec
tion are braver than in others, aa
there would bo but a small margin of
pi out for ibe best fruit at these fig
ures now, and later, when tbe fruit
becomes more plentiful, it ia natural
ly to ho expected that prices will de
cline. Other reports come from other
sectious tbat buyeis are getting fruit
In the orchards at 75o. and if I per
barrel, but f.irmerg are not anxious
sellers at these figures.
One feature whiob ia militating
against tbe Intotests of tbe buyera
this teuton is tbe Inct tbat there is a
light crop along the Hudson . of
early apples, making tbe maikets high
er for fancy fruit uow thau will be
the onee when tho later crop tecomea
vn liable. This ia naturally calculated
to cause tbe f aimers to feel rather
bullish ln tbeir views.
Generally apeaking, however, con
servative buyers are proceeding slow
ly, very few deals are being made and
it is likely that they will operate
along these lines, until tbe f aimers
have bad time to.get tbeir Ideas down
to a point wheie there is a chance to
make some profit on tbe deal.
Scotland Wants Apple.
Thomas Russell, tbe well-known
Glasgow fruit merchant, was in New
York this week, makiug arrangementa
for tbe coining apple season. Mr.
Russell visits the United States an
nually and takes a vast quantity of
American apples, for wbiob be bas a
Quo outlet iu Scotlaud. He will be
represented in New York this year by
Thomas P. Wullace, Inc., otlSl Keade
street.
In speaking ot probable demand for
American apples in Glasgow tbia sea
son, Mr. Russell, said: "We will want
a lot of American apples II we cau get
them at a price that will allow ua to
sell them at a profit,
"Couditions in Sootlaod, however,
are very much ilke they bave been in
the United States, and as I may say
the world over. The financial depres
sion bas oaugbt us, and tbe men are
largely working halt time even at our
shipyards. Under these conditions, it
may be readily seen tbat fruit must
be cheap. We have bad a good crop
of small fruits, such as we raise aud
tbo prices for everything have been
cheap, aud it is ooly natural tbat
prices for apples must be compara
tively cheap also. "
Mr. Russell has not been in the
states long euough to form au opinion
regarding the piobal lo yield, but his
iuloiniatloi) is that there will be plen
ty of apples tbia yesr, and that pi ices
will be mucb lower than tbey were
last season. He will visit tbe apple
sections before hia return, both in
the United States aud Canada, in or
der to get au insight iuto the situation.
