HER PICTURE WON
PRIZE IN CONTEST
"fso t it strange," said Miss Doroas
Mattbewe, the beautiful leading lady
of tbe Walters & Christ Stock com
pacy, "that gome beautiful women
take good photographs, while others
take such bad ouea. It must be like
everything else, gome people do some
things well and otriers cannot do them
at all. lo nearly nine times out of
ten when my managers auk melo have
my photograph taken the photog
taber asks me to pose for him, us he is
entsring a prize convention some
where. A few yeira ago, while play
ing an engagement in Boston, uu old
schoolmate and intiniHte friend of
mine, asked me to call at his home to
spend tbe day. His home was a beau
tiful one, lovely lawns, beautiful tall
trees and tbe most picturesque foun
tain built ot stones with water lilies
Id the basin and vines climbing
through tbe looks. With these sur
roundings 1 spent a most pleasant
day. 'Miss Matthews,' eaid be, 'isn't
it awful when ont tries to do a
thing and la beaten before he starts. I
am a member of tbe camera club and
we are to bave a prize oonveution
next month. 1 bave been tryinu tor
three months to get suitable pictures
and have made an utter iailure of
it..'" Miss Matthews thought for a
moment, thinking of the trees, tbe
fountain, etc, and than suggested
that she might be able to belp him.
He agreed with ber, then went to tbe
bouse and got bis camera, and they
staitod to make an ide il picture for
tbe prizf contest, "i'he fountain
will make a beautiful background,"
said she. Ho agreed with her and
everything was arranged, and as she
sat with one arm slightly over Iter
head as if telling him something
about the trees, a small bird lit on
ber hand aud looked into ber faoe as
if to say, "how do you do." Ibe
picture was taken and tbe bird flew
away. Her engagement closed in tbat
oity aud oue eveuing while playing in
Jersey City she sat leisurely iu her
dressing room waiting for curtain
call when she received a telegram say
ing: "I won first prize, thanks to you
BDd tbe bird. Henry."
APPLE NEWS OF
CURRENT INTEREST
A report from Hopbester, tbe center
of tbe western New' rork apple belt,
saya:
Apple buyers are making no race
this year for tbe orohards in western
New York. On the contrary tbey are
going low, knowing tbat it is eaily,
tbe orop is large and there is plenty
ot time between now and harvest to
eeoure their supplies. Tbey refusn to
be stampeded by tbe growers like they
were last year aid are simply scout
ing about, gettinn a line uu conditions
and eeouring growers' views as to
prloes. There seerua to be no differ
ence of opinion nbout the crop. Both
glowers and dealers aie of tbe opin
ion tbat tbe yield will be good and
the quality tine, but this tiriauimliy
of opinion is missing in regard to the
price. Tbe growers and operators are
divided on this question, more so
than last year when the grower' ex
pectations of a high prioe were turned
into realization by the keen bid iiug
ol tbe latter.
The York state members ofjtlie In
ternational Apple Shippers' Associa
tion returned from tbe Niagara Falls
convention firmly imbued with tbe
belief tbat tbe outlook For a large ap
ple crop justified tbe establishment ot
a low price, not too low to be unprofit
able to tbe grower, but promising a
reasonable profit to tbe jobber and re
tailer, and making it possible to place
tbe fruit in the bands of the consumer
so tbat tbe publio can afford to eat
plenty ot apples. The popular price
which the apple buyers in this seo
tiou now have iu mind is $1 foi tbe
fruit or $1 50 f. o. b. In view of the
large crops in tbe heavy commercial
producing discriots these figure are
considered by them t be saue and
equitable. At this price tbey ligure
tbat everybody in tbe deal cau in-ike
money, the grower, 'he shipper, tbe
jobber and tbe retailer, while tbe
consumer can bave plenty of apples
all winter at a reasonable figure.
Tbe outlook for apples iu tte Or
leans county is favorable. While
tbete will be no large crops, almost
every orchard has some variety show
ing up well and this year's yield will
show in bulk a trifle bettei than last
year. Greenings will be a great deal
heavier, but lialdw ns will be lightor.
From present indications tbe fruit
will be 50 per cent better iu quality
than last season aud both the growars
and buyers are going to nnke a point
to see tbat only worthy apples go Into
the barrels. There is a good deal of
talk about piioes, bat no big sales
bave been made. Growers would like
to get $2 per barrel for No 1 Baldwins
aud Greenings, but buyers are conser
vstlve. The probability Is tbat fruit
aud standard fall varieties will sell all

Hnilsnn River Crop 25 Per Cent.
After a careful survey of the apple
orohards along the Hudson liver, I
feel that a safe estimate of the crop
cannot be plBoed at abote 25 per cei.t,
says a special dispatch to the H'ruit
Trade Journal. Aa tbe readers of the
Journal aie aware tbe trees Hosnmed
well, but tor some reusou that the
gtowera themselves Mre uiiaWe fo dis
cover, tbe fruit ha not matured aud
tbe apples are still dropping from tho
trees iu iuiiiv orohards. Tho applfs
are also not showing very goo I qual-
Pears are a very heavy crop, ..n'
they are also dropping badly, the
farmers finding il necessary topics
them from under tbe tres. Thi
oounta for the large sliipmeuN no
being made to New York. Every tre.
however, is covered with pears, aud
all ind cations point to tbe harvesting
of tbe heavy crop wbicb has previous
ly been predicted in tbe Journal.
There is very little buying being
done at present. The views ot tbe
farmers are now a little bigb as re
gards tbe prices wbicb tbey want for
the apples, there being a cousiderble
difference between their ideas and
those of the dealers. There ere some
dealers who have contracted for ap
ples in tbe orchards at 50 cents per
barrel, but the farmers, as a rule, do
not want to accept this figure, and
the buyers are holding off, as tbey
expect tbe farmers to teduoe their
prices as soon as tbe returns from tbe
large markets become known. An
other reason why tbe dealers are not
overly anxious to oontraot for tbe
fruit is that tbey have fears regarding
tbe quality.
Bartlett pears bave been selliug at
$1 50 to$1.75 but there baa beenjittle
demand at these prices.

ti. M. Uilbeit, of tbe firm of Kiohey
& Gilbert, the big apple handlers of
Toppeniub, Wash., iu a recent report
on tbe fruit situation in tbe Yakima
valley enya:
"Apples, of course, are tbe big end
of the fruit crop iu tbe Yakima val
ley, fully two-thirds of tbe 2,500 oars
ot fruit this season being tall and win
ter apples. Ihe apples here this year
are entirely free from worms, scale
aud any disease. The fruit growers
have made largo money in the past
fen years and given careful attention
to spraying, spraying thoroughly in
tbe winter witb Hex lime and sulphur
spray, and spraying thoroughly just
aa tbe bloom is falling with arsenate
of lead for tbe oodlin moth. Graven
seiu apples are now being pioked and
shipped to Alaska and points in Brit
ish Columbia.
''Growers aud dealers are not look
ing for tho extravagantly high prices
of last year. Tbey are expecting from
$1.25 to 11.50 fot fanoy export rarie-tie-
and CO cents to 91 tor medium va
lieties, such as Black Twig, Rome
Beauiy, Waguer, etc. Jonathans will
be ready for shipment tbe lust ot Sep
tember and are euinu to show, from
present indicat ous, elegaut color and
uunlitv. All v-Brieties are a full crop
and tbe estimated shipments of apples
will be 1,000 cars of 000 boxes each."
