BOWSER ASA SLEUTH
He Undertakes to Help Police In
Running Down Crime.
ARRESTED THE FIRST NIGHT.
Old Philoiophtr It Taken t th Lock

an Officer Mrs. B. Informed of Hub
by' Action.
Copyright. 19. by T. C. MeClurt).
When Mr. Bowser came home to din
ner the other evening he hod a bundle
under bis arm.
It was a suspicious bundle.
So far as Mrs. Bowser could tell It
might contain a living child.
Or the dismembered remains of a
strouparm.
And Mr. Bowser utood for a moment
In the hall and looked at her keenly
and suspiciously. During that sixty
seconds ho seemed to rend her very
thoughts. She tried to return bis look,
but found herself shivering.
"What have you brought home?" she
finally managed to ask.
"Never you mind," he answered as
he placed the bundle on a cbnlr.
After dinner I want to have a talk
with you."
"Hut why do you act so queer, and
w hy do you look at roe in such a
strango way?"
"We will go down to dinner, madam.
If you have anything on your con-

science It will do well for you to con
fess and throw yourself on my mercy."
"Oli, you've got another ono of your
streaks on, have you? I thought It
was about time. I don't care a cent
what Is In your old bundle."
Glanced Around 8upioiouly.
When Mr. Bowser entered the dining
room he glanced around suspiciously
at the walls.
Then down at the floors and under
tho tublo.
Tho look he gave tho cook made her
shake and shiver In her shoes, and sho
enmo within an ace of dropping the
dish of innshctl potatoes.
At Intervals during llio meal Mrs.
Bowser found his eyes resiling on her,
and If she had been guilty of poisoning
her mother or cutting tho cat's throut
sho must have betrayed herself and
asked to be taken Into custody nt
once.
When dinner was half over Mr. Bow
ser suddenly rose up and Inspected the
fildebonrd, as If suspicious that some
murderer wns concealed therein. Then
he looked into tho refrigerator and
sulITed long and suspiciously. Ills vic
tim had thus far escaped him, but he
was close on tho trail.
' "Well, hnvo you got through with
this monkey business?" tartly asked
Mrs. Bowser as she rose up.
"Lead the wny, womnn, lend tho
way," ho replied, with one long last
glanco around tho room, in which his
eyes took In everything, oven to the
china crenm pitcher with Its broken
nose.
Upon reaching tho Bitting room he
took a clgnr from his pocket and care
fully examined both ends of It to see If
It contained an Infernal machine. Tho
match with which ho llnnlly lighted It
was also critically examlued to see If
It had been tampered with. Then his
eyes fell upon tho cat, uud for sixty
seconds he stood and steadfastly re
garded her. Tho feline writhed under
bis scrutiny and finally made a dash
from the room.
"Are you going to piny the Idiot all
tho evening?" demanded Mrs. Bowser
as her eyes flashed and her cheeks
reddened.
"I am ready to explain, madam,'
replied Mr. Bowser t:s ho tooK a seat
"IVrhaps you did not see tho Interview
with tho mayor published In the pa
pers this morning. In which ho asked
the co-operation of nil good citizens in
tho detection of crime?"
"And you are going to co-operate?"
"I am."
Mr. Bowser suddenly looked behind
him.
't hen lie arose and tiptoed across the
room and looked out Into the hall.
Then he glnnced at the piano as It
wondering what guilty secrets It was
concealing.
Then ho spoke, and his tones were
Kleiitty and his gestures dramatic as
ho said:
"Yes, I shall go out this evening und
hunt down tho man thnt murdered old
Nancy Bay for the few dollars she had
In the house. The police believe that
ho (led to Europe on a sailing vessel
but I differ with them. I believe he Is
tlll lu the city. Aye, he may be with'
In two blocks of us and walking about
a freo as any honest man. I am sure
I shall know him on sight, however."
"Bosh!" exclaimed Mrs. Bowser in
contempt. "Tou want to leave th
detective business to thoso who are
paid for It If people around here get
to know that you nro slouthlng around
they will call you a fool."
"Bcmember who you nra talking to,
madam!"
"I shall. I say It's the craziest no
tion you ever brought home, and
you've brought a hundred. Give It up
before you get Into trouble."
Mr. Bowser took another tiptoe look
Into the ball.
Then he softly opened the parloi
door and looked In.
Then he looked over Mrs. Bowser'
bead at one of the back windows. The
sash looked auspicious. The panes ol
glass seemed to have guilty knowl
edge. "Sit still where you are, and don't
move a finger until I return!" he
hoarsely whispered, "nemember not
a finger not a thumb not a toe!"
"YouH be moving yonr fingers and
thumbs and toes toward an Idiot asy
lum before morning!" she called aftet
him as he disappeared down the hall.
The minutes went on.
Juit the Night For Murder.
It was just the night fur a
blooded murder.
A black vlsaged villain might even
then be straddle of the alley fence
with a thirst of blood In bis heart
Hist! Look out! Beware!
When Mr. Bowser returned he had
donned an old suit of clothes, was
wearing a Scotch cap and had the
false whiskers of a stage villain. He
looked like a cross between Vldoeq
and an old tramp who lost his all In
the great Chicago fire. Mrs. Bowser
gave one look and then burst out
laughing.
"Well, madam?" queried Mr. Bow
ser, with great dignity, after a min
ute. "I have nothing to say. Go right
along with your sleuth business. If
you get Into trouble don't blame me."
"And when I return, madam when
I return after having landed the mur
derer In a police station"
"Yes, when you return."
"I shall have a number of questions
to ask you and the cook. Don't at
tempt flight. Neither of you can es
cape me."
After standing for a few seconds
with a warning finger pointed nt her
nose be tiptoed down the hall and
opened and shut tho front door so
carefully that she heard no sound. As
he emerged from the gate he caught
sight of a man standing beside a treo
on the opposite side of the street.
In one .ninute Mr. Bowser had
crossed the asphalt.
Waiting For the Cook.
In another minute the suspicious
character was explaining that he wns
engnged to the cook In the house and
was waiting for her to come out to
tho gate. He spoke with the accents
of truth, and the old sleuth let him
go, but with a warning never to do It
again.
The next suspicious chnracter was
dressed In femnlo apparel. That was
Just the disguise a murderer would
adopt, and Mr. Bowser took up tho
trail.' He had pursued it for five min
utes and was about to advance and
place his hand on her shoulder when
she wheeled around and exclaimed:
"See hero, you old masher, If you
follow me another step I'll pull all
the hair out of your bend."
Mr. Bowser dropped the trail, but
two blocks on he picked up another.
It was that of a lamo mnn. There was
a faint odor of pegs and wax lu tho
air, and ho Jumped to the conclusion
that the murderer was passing him
self off as a cobbler.
Ten minutes Inter Mrs. Bowser was
called up on the telephone.
"Is this Mrs. Bowser?"
"Yes."
"Wifo of Samuel Bowser?"
"Yes."
"Well, this Is tho Fourth police pre
cinct. Your husbnnd hns been arrest
ed for passing himself off as an offi
cer, and he won't be homo tonight
Goodby." M. QUAD.
Through the United States Land
Office In Roseburg contests have been
instituted by the Federal Govern
ment against IS coal entries In what
Is known as the Eden Ridge Coal
Field, In township 32-1, north of the
Coqullle River, in Coos county. It Is
the belief of tho government that the
claims are wanted principally for the
magnificent timber that stands on
them and not for what coal they
might contain. The lands are em
braced In a forest reserve, but under
the law If they are proven to be
chiefly valuable for coal deposits they
will pass from the reserve, timber
and all, into the hands of the appli
cants.
