Oregon surveyors reached Madras tbe

Sixty-one carloads of pears, peaches

Sacramento, Cal, July 21. This is
said to have beaten all previons reo
ords for a single day's shipment from

was 49 cars for one day io 1902.

There is a large cherry tree near
Ulympla, Wash., which is reported to
be about tbe same size aa tbe Newberg
tree, aud those two are probably the
largest cherry trees in tbe Pacific
Northwest. There Is, or was, a tew
years ago, a very large Black Republi
can cberry tree at Vaucouver, Wash.
In one year, about 17 years ago, its
marketed orop amounted to over 2000
pounds, aod brought ita owner about

Strike Coal at Madras.
Although tbe oewa was not made
public at the time, tbe Madras Oil &
Gag company drilled into a vein of
good looking coul in the bole which
tbey were sinking on the west slope
ot Gtizzly. The coal was encountered
at a depth of 150 feet and appears to
.be of a fine quality, but the extent of
it la not known, as tbe woik was sus
pended just after tbe ooal wag struck,
the machinery being too light to carry
tbe bole to a muob greater depth.
When tbe work was suspended, Frank
Forest, president of the company, lett
for California to buy heavier machin
ery. Ue did not buy in Calitornia,
however, but placed an order with an
eastern Arm through tbeir Portland
representatives, tor a standard drill
ing outfit and other machinery, mak
ing up a oar load lot, and tbis will be
received within the next six weeks.
In the meantime tbe drill on the
ground will be used in prospecting
tbe coal discovery, to ascertain the
thickness of tbe vein and It is prob
able that further Investigation of the
ooal prospect will prove it to be of
slBoieut extent to be of great Import
ance. Ibe discovery ot a good quality
ot ooal in Crook county would be of
immense importance in the develop
ment of tbia section, measureably by
tbe exteut of tbe coal deposits uncov
ered, aod tbe exploration ot tbeir dis
covery by tbe local proepeoting com
pany will be watohed with muob in
