DIDN'T SEE ALL THE
MT. HOOD ORCHARDS
Editor Glacier, Hood River, Ore.
Dear Sir: Vour leading article io
tbe irane ot July 30 will undoubtedly
do much to interest people in tbe up
per Hood Kiver valley, bul some of
tbe statements therein should not go
unchallenged, and in tbe name of tbe
Mt. Hood Development League 1 wish
to correct some ut them.
Tbe "last view ot orchards to be
seen from tbe road" is not at Willow
Flat nor at any other place this side
of Jthe Mt. Hood postotUce. unless
tbe pen n delibeuitely closes bia eyes
while passing aliug tbe read.
At the top of Booth bill and near
tbe rotd eta be seen the tasfern end
ot 18 acres of new orchard owned by
Mr. Hageu, if Portland. The old
and new orcbar !a of J. P. Hillstrom
adjoin this on the south Son.e of the
30 acres ot the Elppa Orchard com
pany can be seen through the trees
intervening. Tbe holding-, of B Jen
sen iu tbe Fame neighborhood should
be mentioned, attbougb not visible
from tbe road. J. M. Lenz bas 10
aores of new treea and some'in bear
ing. Clone ty are 10 acres owned by
B. Strauhal, not visible
Next comes F. M. Ireland with 10
aores in plain sight and tbe old Au
bert place, present owner unknown
to me, with another 10. Also eight
aores owned by Mr. Laughton is close
at band. J. K. Steele bus at least rive
Hcres of new and bearing treea In full
view, and a little farther on are 15
acrea of trees, some ot which are in
bearing, many pioliflo grape vines
and several acres of strawberries be
longing to L. Nex. Tbe old Tieman
aud Baldwin place have many old
trees, as well aa large new orchards
all in view of the road, as are also
those ot Patereau, Slauton, Dumas
aud Ruhnke. E. C. Miller's 15 acres
of fruit tieea and strawberries are
plainly to be seen, although not close
to tbe road, ibe large amount of bay
being out by Mr. DuUleld on tbe
Uubnke place should be mentioned
both tor quantity and quality. The
20 aores of young orohard and three
acres ot strawberries belonging to J.
L. Langille are on the opposite side
aud In full view, and adjoining tbem
ou the south are 10 acres of bearing
und uew trees and strawberries along
ine roan Deiongiog to H. Kusb. S.
A. Del men has six aores already pre
pared tor planting to treea aud ber
ries this tall, at tbe road side. Paul
Aubert has a large orchard of new and
bearing tiees extending to tbe road
across from the postoUice, as has also
J. Vaut biers.
Tbe commercially successful orch
ards owned by Messrs. Cooper, Edick,
Sandmau, Lurwood, Dimmiok and
others must certaiuly have been view
ed by the Glacier representative sod
others In tbe automobile, and are
surely large enough to be worthy of
mentiou, at least in such an article as
that writteu last week.
In all cases the orchards are well
kept, mid it ions and improvements are
constantly being made and the deter
mination to make the eastern side of
the upper valley the equal or superior
of niiv other section is everywhere
present, there is much more that
might be said, Mr. Editor, but I will
close with the suggestion that your
representative make this trip again.
Yours truly,
