Baker City last week experienced

ing to the Federal Weather Station
there. The temperature reached 102.
The only cement plant in the Pa
cific NorthweBt will be erected In
Portland in the near future by Ore
gon and Utah capitalists. The com
pany Is capitalized at $1,200,000.
Walking In his sleep. Samuel
Scheldt, 8 years old. of Albany, fell
from a window of the Hotel Ilevere
last week onto the roof of an adjoin
ing building, breaking his arm.
Mrs. James Hay, living near Sclo,
last week gave birth to triplets. Her
husband had gone to a neighbor's to
annonnre (lis arrival of twins. When
he returned he was Informed by the
muse that anot'ier child had arrived.
Samuel it. Johnson, member of the
Arm of Johnson Bros., bankers and
merchants at Diifiir, died Middonly
at his home In that city Saturday.
Friday Mr. Johnson was thrown from
a horse, alighting on his head and
shoulders. His Injuries were not
considered serious, but later hemorr
hages developed In the brain ' and
death came suddenly. He was 38
years old.

More than 500 acres in Linn coun
ty are now devoted to commercial
walnut culture. Half of this acreage
was planted this year and all of It
In the last three years. The acreage
was approximately doubled this year

of cultivation to develop successful
commercial orchards.

daughter from the breakwater at
Lake Waahlngten, In Seattle, last
week, Mrs. Tressa Markley, wife of
Norman E. Markley, an attorney
formerly of Eugene, committed sui
cide by leaping into the lake herself.
The little girl crawled out of the
water and after more than an hour
of climbing up the steep hill, reached
the home of Arthur Mottinger, where
she told her atory. Half an hour
later a party of searchers found the
woman's body In the lake a short
distance from where she had leaped
from the breakwater.

An adiourned session of the ai
nual meeting of the Board of Re
gents of the University of Oregon
was held in the office of President
Campbell at Eugene. Saturday, when
purchase of additional land was dis
cussed, new instructors employed,
$10,000 appropriated for library
books and provision made for erec
tion of a temporary recitation room
on land adjoining the campus..

A. P. Stover, irrigation engineer
for the United States has just fin
ished putting water, out of a branch
from the east fork of Daisy Creek,
on 50 acres of land on the George
R. Bagley ranch, four miles north
west of Hillsboro. This is the larg
est irrigation experiment made by
the irrigation department in the
Willamette Valley and the outcome
Is being watched with interest.

W. C. E. Pruitt, acting district at
torney for Umatilla and Morrow
counties and temporary city editor of
the Pendleton Morning Tribune, has
mysteriously disappeared. So far as
anxious relatives have been able to
ascertain he went west on O. R. &
N. train No. 5, one night last week,
taking with him a suitcase, an extra
suit of clothes and less than $100 in
cash. There does not appear to be
the slightest cause for his strange
action.

The main building of the Albany
Iron Works, the largest foundry in
Oregon outside of Portland, was de
stroyed by fire last week. The loss
Is placed at about $10,000, with In
surance of $9,5000. It will be re
built. Iast week fire on Dry Creek, near
Blue Mountain station, destroyed 952
sacks -of wheat belonging to J. H.
Coffman and William Talbert. The
grain had been threshed ten days
ago and was piled at the mouth of a
canyon. It waa insured for 50 cents
a bushel and had already been sold
for 76 cents.

Six hundred members of the Hood
River Iowa State Association and
their friends ate barbecued ox and
listened to speechmaklng at Grange
Park last wek. The occasion was the
annual meeting of the association for
the purpose of electing officers and
renewing old associations of their
former home In the Middle West
William Blake and 40 other cltl-
tena ot Deer Island, Columbia coun
ty, have petitioned the Railroad Com
mission to use its Influence with the
management of the Astoria & Colum
bia River railroad to have what la
known as Tldo Creek crossing made
a flag atatlon for the benefit and
convenience of the patrons of the
road.
More than 100 allottee on the
Umatilla reservation have been given
final patent to their land, and in turn
have disposed of it to white men dur
ing the past eight or ten months, ac
cording to Agent McFatiidge. At
this rate It will only be a few years
until practically all of the most valu
able land on the reservation will
have passed from tho Indiana Into
the hands of the whites.
Because of lack ot men, the Gov
ernment forest rangers are almost
powerless to fight the big forest fires
now burning in the National forest
reserve In southeastern Marlon coun
ty, 15 miles northeast of Detroit.

The elder Chinaman looked puzzled.

A Sanborntou (N. II.) writer says
that 101 of the sons of that town
fought In the Revolution and fifty In
the civil war. Of these lutter, six were
killed and thirteen wounded ot the bat
tle of Chnncellorsvllle.
A large number of concrete houses
are to be erected on Long Island by
New York syndicate. The buildings
will have fronts of pressed brick and
will be fireproof. Two hundred will
be built this year.

very stale by dipping each one quickly

If a gruel pot is allowed to stand on

or two after cooking It will not cool
the contents very much and will make
ticking less probable.
If a broom has worn unevenly, Its
life may be prolonged by soaking the
straws in warm water for three-quar
ters of an hour, then tying the straws
tightly together and trlmmlug the ends
with a long pair of scissors.
