We are iuformed tbat the demand

there U not a vacant bonne in the
town of any description. It !( claim

taining from (our to Ore room oaa be
bought for 8200 aud bouses ereoted on
them for fGUO to f&W. I'bete, tbey
aay, will rent readily for tlO to 115 a
month. It would aeem tbat tbU ought
to be an attractive Investment (or
idle oapital and tbat if brongbt to the
notice of those who have money to in
vest should result in the building of
enough new bouse to house newcom
ers and others who are seeking a borne
here.
The object for wbiob Hood River's
proposed automobile club is being or
ganized is highly commendable. There
is nothing tbat adds more to the pres
tige of community than good roada.
With maoy hundred visitora travels
ing the valley eacb year and telling of
its ncenlo aud other attractions abroad
we ought not to let their story be
marred by a concluding comment ou
the unsatisfactory condition of our
highways. Now tbat we have tbe new
ocnnty aud matters ct this kind are
to some extent local it Is to be hoped
that residents of the valley, in con
Junction with the new county ofUoers
and the automobile club, will make
very effort to put our roada in tbe
best possible oondltion.
Tbe aotlon of tbe international Ap
ple Shippers' Association, wbicb it is
aid, will endorse tbe proposed new
law to Increase the size o' apple
boxes, Is not meeting with favor by
growers to whose attention it bas been
brought. As tbe boxes now in use in
tbe Northwest states contain a full
bushel aooarding to tbe Winchester
measurement, now accepted as tbe
standard (or tbe United States, there
does not seem to be any excuse for
increasing tbelr size exoept tbe greed
of the shippers. Unless conoerted
action of tome kind is taken by grow
ers against tbe bill there is consider
able reason for believing tbat it wilt
be passed during tbe coming session
of Congress. Therefore it Is np to tbe
apple men to take up tbe matter
through tbelr various associations and
protest against tbe mesaure being en
acted. Presented a Loving Cap.

PORTLAND FIRE
BURNS FOUR BLOCKS
New tbat wus tupposedly authentic
reached here late Tuesday afternoon
to the etlect that Are was eating its
way into tbe heart of Portland's busl
ness district and tbat it bd gottes
beyond tbe control of tbe city Are de
psitnient. Tbe leport stated that
twelve blocks extending from tbe
Union station between Tbhd and Sev
enth streets weie on Ore and tbat it
was rapidly extending. Later when
tbe evening train (ram Portland ar
rived It was learned that tbe reports
were exaggerated, but tbat tbe most
disastrous Ore in tbe history of the
city was raging. In all four blocks
were consumed by tbe flame, tbe ori
gin of which la said to have been a
blaze tbat started In hay loft.
Tbe Oregonian give tbe following
gtepblo account of the fire:
Fire blotted practically one full
block off tbe map ot tbe North Port
land business distriot, burned most of
tbe property ott three other blocks
id threatened tbe entire district,
late yesterday afternoon. Property
worth approximately $!o,000 was
destroyed, properly representing near
ly ll.uuo.uuu was actually scorched.
and property worth well Into tbe mil
lions was within the danger zoue.
, Tbe fact that a line of brick build
ings blocked tbe course of the dames
until the tire department bad an op
portunity to couceutrate its forces at
the weak points, accounts for the lim
iting ot the Haines to nve blocks.
Cause of the tire is not yet clear.
Iliete are several theories, incendiar
ism, spontaneous combustion in a lott
of uew bay, dropping ot a match or
cigarette, flying sparks from a chim
ney. Tbe origin waa traced to tbe
middle seutlon ot tbe Oregon Transfer
oompany 's plaoe at Fifth and Uilsan
street.
The heaviest Iohs ot t lie Ore falls on
the IJarr hotel, tbe loss ot building
and contents reaching )?'J5, 000.
Among tbe other heavy losers whose
Josses were approximated last night
ate the Oregon Transfer compuuy,
10,000; Portlaud Carriage company,
912,000 and tbe Oveilaud iruusfer
oompany, $10,000. Scores ot losses
ranging from .uo to 9MW are re
oordod.
Tbe tire popped up with tbe sud
denness that attends the lighting of
a gas jet. Home smoke was seen on
tbe roof of tbe Oregon Transfer com
pany's place about 4:45 o'clock. Fif
teen minutes later tbe roof bad given
place to a great column of flames.
f anned uy a strong wind from the
northwest, the column of Dames pass
ed quickly from building to building,
(laiulug impetus from tbe big fiame
building aud tons of buy and other
combustible matter, the lire quickly
leaped across tbe street to tbe North
ern Puoilio Wagon Works, where tbere
was another great array of fuel, aud
sweeping this, passed on through the
block from Fifth to the blind west
wall of tbe Union Meat company's
plaoe.
Checked here, it concentrated its
fury, as If with an intelligence of its
own, aud leaped Into tbe block uortii
of Uilsan street and then jumped
Fifth and woiked both east and went.
When, at (3:30 o'olook, It bad run
its oourse and given nway before a
small liver that bad been poured on
from a score ot nozzles, a std picture
of disaster lay all about. Tbe whole
block bounded by Fifth, Sixth. Oil
san aud lioyt streets, with tbe excep
tion of tbe southern corner, wus a
heap of smoking debris. Nearly all
the west half of tbe block bounded by
Fourth. Filth, llilsati and lloyt
streets was gone; all frame buildings
were in ruins between Fourth, l'lftb,
Uilsan and Flanders. The block be
tween Fittb and Sixth aud the big
brick iiarr hotel being represented by
lettering, blackened walls, wbicb fell
In later, fortunately without hurting
anyone.
Just one thing prevented Portland's
most disastrous tire and what might
have been one of the serious flies of
tbe northwest. 'I hat was tbe presnuce
of big brick building on tbe course
of the flames. No farce ot firemen
could have stopped tbe onslaught hud
the tiro not been checked on the east
by the Union Meat oompany walls aud
on tbe north, at Flanders street from
Fifth to Fourth, by theOiegou Casket
oompany' building, tbe Fovoy build
ing and a new briok structure that is
beiug erected (or occupancy by Cblu
ese at Fourth and Fluuders streets,
In eaob Instance tbe lire struok
against a blind north wall and got no
further. This obstaole to tho progress
ot tbe tire gave the firemen a basis
from which to work, aud Chief Camp
bell was not slow to seize the oppor
tunity. Concentrating his forces, he
drenched the tire with thousands ot
gallons of water and chemicals.
'Ibere was a thrilling contest, here
for mattery of tbe situation. Still
aided by a strong northwest wind,
the flames fought persistently to get
act osa Flanders street. Tongues ot
lire played ou tbe walla ot tho Oregon
Cakset company's building ut Fifth
aud Flauders, aud a veritable furnace
raged behind the Povey and Chinese
buildings which guarded Flanders be
tween Fourth and Fifth streets. Once
the lire reachod full around iu front
of tbe casket establishment and
caught in tho casements. Tbe Ureuieu
played half a dozeu streams on the
dauger poiut and won.
Unable to get nourlshmet, tbe fhe
