When MiM Mary Cloves, forty year
pKl mid nunt of Eileen Cleves, not yet
quite lialf those years, accepted tue re
eponsilrility of acting as chaperon to
tlio youujt lady for n few weeks' Btay
In He lierlishlrc hills ahc determined
to do her duty nt nil cost.
They had scarcely reached the hotel
seleWed when that duty confronted
her. Paul Clifford, the artist, crosm-d
their path. The young people had
many mutual friends In town, but
had never loen Introduced.
In any hotel hi the Berkshire, the
Cotskllls or ou the xeushore a hand
aome young tIrl Dud a bachelor artist
of uote, with romance still leashed In
his soul, are bound to meet sooner or
later If given half a Khow.
Such ineetiiifis come about by acci
dent, or Providence takes a hand, and
the first think' they know fljey have
Introduced themselves to each other
and are talking about urt and motor
trips through Kurojic.
Aunt Mary understood this; also thnt
she was there to prevent It. She
would Insist on formality to the bitter
end. She did insist. Even when she
and Miss Eileen In walking out one
day were suddenly confronted by a
snake as much as nine inches long
and screamed and the nrtixt came run
ning up and saved their lives from
the monster she stood ou formality
and Insisted that her charge do the
same. The artist hero was dismissed
with a formal Ihv and went his way
with an odd sense of their Ingratitude
gnawing at bis heart.
Three or four days biter, however,
a family with whom ho was well ac
quainted In the city arrived, and a
formal Introduction took place. This
made things nil right in 0110 way and
all wrong la another.
IIo was now privileged to lift his
hat and say good morning, but the old
maid looked upon him as a possible
lover and added many precautions.
She was polite, but she was also vigi
lant. The artist probably hoped, as
another man would In his place, that
lu time sho would thnw out, and he
held himself ready day and night for
moro heroic deeds.
Around the second story of the hotel
ran a veranda, and the three pnrtles lu
the case had rooms opeulng on to this
promenade. One afternoon as the aunt
was parading up and down the veran
da she noticed that tbe artist was In hit)
room writing a letter. Sho at once
suspected that It was n note to be
passed to Miss Eileen at the first fa
vorable opportunity.
Tlio chaperon was disturbed, but de
termined. Sho promenaded clear
around tlio house, and upon her return
sho beheld a sheet of note paper lying
ou the floor. Sho also saw that tlio
artist had stepped out of his room. A
draft had caught up the letter he was
writing and drawn It through the open
window.
Aunt Mary was a woman of tbe
sternest principles. She reasoned It
out lu a moment that she bad no mo
ral right to that note. It was for her
to Ignore lis existence and continue
her promenade, but a.l at once her
stem principles took n tumble.
Sho stooped, seized tbe sheet and
fled to her room, which wns next to
that of her niece. Even then it wns
not too lato to snvo her lifelong prin
ciples untarnished. She could have
torn tlio sheet Into fragments before
reading tho lines written thereon. She
could, but she didn't. Sho read even to
the last word, and a moment later she
was lu tlio room of her niece, saying:
"I suspected It from the first! IIo Is
n cold blooded wretch!"
"Who Is, auntie?" was the natural
query.
"Mr. Clifford! I hnve found him out
Just In time. Oh, the perfidy of It!
Oh, the Insults heaped upon us! Head
that. No, let mo read It."
And, holding the half finished letter
lu her left hand and using the right
forefinger to punctunto tho air while
sho held her figure In tragic pose and
spoke from the depths of her Indlgna
tlon, sho read:
Dear Jim I havo soon both of them,
Tho old ono Is no roo.1 and badly out of
repair. WouMn t lake her as a (rift
Guess Bho was ono of the lint ones made.
The other 1b a clipper, with heaps of go
In her. Decided luirgaln, ami I ahull close
the deal nt once. Climbs tbe steepest hills
nround hero like n cut, mid you ought to
see her scoot on the level! The old one
i Thnt was ns far ns tho artist had
'written when ho left tho room, and
the breeze camo in and toyed with the
sheet and sent It to tho feet of the
woman who had a duty to do. She
finished reading and maintained her
poso for half a mlnuto and then sol'
cmuly Bald:
"I found It ou tho veranda. Tho
wind brought It to me. It come from
his room. I snw him ns ho was writ
ing It."
"Do you mean thnt Mr. Clifford
wroto this?" asked the young lady.
"I do. Was ever villainy more com
pletely unmasked! IIo has seen both
of us. The old one Is no good nnd bad
ly out of repair. I am the old one.
am badly out of repair."
"But, auntie"
"Don't Interrupt uie. Wouldn't take
her ns a gift! Guess she was one of
the first ones made. This about rue
about your own aunt! Oh, tho crafty,
sneaking villain!"
"But why should Mr. Clifford write
such things about you? lie is surely a
gentleman, and there must be n mis-
take somewhere."
"And he refers to you," continued
the aunt without heed lit the question
"he refers to you as a clipper with
heaps of go in her. You are a decided
bargain. You climb bills like a rat
You scoot on tho level! The man
ought to be driven from the hotel."
"He never wrote It!" exclaimed tho
girl. "lie never meant you nor me,
There is some awful mistake here. I
never saw his handwriting, but I'll"
"Walt right here!" hoarsely com
manded the aunt. Aud, with the letter
In her bond, she went down to the of
fice to consult tho register. She was
absent ten minutes, aud during this
interval Miss Eileen beard a man's
teDS ou tbe veruuda and peeped put
to e the artist looking about as If be
bad lost something. Wben the aunt
returned she bad the light of victory
In her eyes.
"The writing Is tbe same," she an
nounced. "He would be convicted in
any court in tbe land. I am an old
one and badly out of repair, and you
re a clipper and climb bills like a
cat If he doesn't leave tbe hotel this
evening we shall start for home In the
morning."
"But I won't go until we are aure
about it," replied the young lady, with
spirit
"Oh, we'll be sure enough about it
Meanwhile at dinner tonight we'll give
Mr. I'aul Clifford tbe coldest snubbing
a man ever received. If you don't as
sist me I'll telegraph your father.
We'll see if he will put up with hli
duugbter being called a cat and a de
cided bargain. I will do tbe snub
bing, aud you simply maintain your
dignity. Out of repair, am I? We'll
see if he isn't worse off."
Tho artist missed bis half finished
epistle, made a search for It and Anal
ly Indited another and mailed it away,
lie came down Into the parlors ten
minute before dinner, hoping for a
word or two with Miss Clcves.
She blushed at sight of him and
blushed still harder as be advanced,
but Bbe stood ou her dignity that is,
she turned her bead away and In
some confusion he passed her and re
marked to tbe aunt that It bad been a
fine day. Miss Cleves wheeled about
like a machine, and after fixing him
with a cold glare lasting thirty sec
onds she icily replied:
"Sir, you have made a mistake."
Tbe artist fell back. He almost fell
over himself In doing so. So far aa
he was concerned he mU'bt have fall
en over tbe hotel aud not been aware
of the fact. It was a summer frost,
and it nipped him bard. Had be turn
ed ouce more toward the girl be would
have found her pose as dignified as
before, but a look of something like
pity In her eyes.
Mr. Clifford did not enter the din
ing room. Frostbites take away a
man's appetite. lie went out Into the
dusk and sat down ou a bowlder and
Imagined that he was Sherlock
Holmes, aud after an hour or so be
figured things out.
Then he sent a telegram to a friend
In the city a friend who knew the
Cleves family well. That bight he was
missed from parlors and verandas. He
could play aud sing and recite, and
there were nlany inquiries for him.
When they wero addressed to Miss
Cleves her reply was:
"Excuse me, but I don't know tbe
party."
There was a new arrival at the hotel
next forenoon. He was closeted with
the artist for half an hour, and then
he bled him forth and found Miss
Clcves seated In a grotto, still wonder
ing how any man on earth dared to
write to another that sho was an old
one. The interview wmcn lonowea
was hot for the first fifteen minutes.
Then It gradually cooled off, though nt
regulnr Intervals for the next half hour
the woman In the case rose to her feet
and exclaimed:
"Yes, but how dared be write that
the old ono was no good and out of
repair? It's shocking, sir. It'a dread
ful! It's something that I cannot forgive."
"But you know, Miss Cleves"
"And how dared he speak of my dear
tilece as climbing a hill like a cat!
Aud how dared he refer to her as a
scooter on tho level! Think of it, sir
a scooter!"
"But you now understand"
"Why, if her father come to know
that she had been called a cat, a
scooter nnd a bargain, 1 should trem
ble for the consequences!"
Nevertheless, when n man bus expla
nations that explain and when he goes
over those explanations often enough,
even an indignant old liiatd must be
convinced at last. So it was with Miss
Cleves. She finally melted, drew a
breath of relief and, seeing Miss Elloen
strolling toward them, she called to
her:
"()li, dearie, It appears that we have
made nn awful mistake. It transpires
that Mr. Clifford was writing to Mr.
Gaston about a couple of nutos that
tho latter had asked him to look at.
Therefore I am not an old one, and you
dou't climb hills like a cat If you
can find Mr. Clifford bring him here,
aud I will aiologlze."
Any artist who didn't pursue his ad
vantage after that deserved to be left
behind In the race.
If any one baa tome across a young
man with a lop shoulder and a pair of
bow legs and answering to the name
of French, please forward particulars

Tbe Hellso Opera House closed its
season last Saturday ulght with "Un

close. Tbe boys shot out all the lights,
three actors had their shoe heels shot

Some of the papers in this territory

the country at large we expect to get

Tbe money stringency that struck
the country last full has had no effect
whatever ou Giveadam Gulch. There
was only a dollar or two lu the town,
aud that has been circulating from

have a real estate boom.
