Olngen Station Now White Salmon.
At last, ssya tbe Enterprise, Whlti
K Imon has beeo pliced no tbe rail
rud map. Ou tbe tlrst of the tuootb
tbe railroad company changed the
name of liiogen station to White
salmon aud everybody la nappy.
We believe this ehauge will be
(oond of material advantage to tbe
valley wbose fruits and berries ate
knowo tar and wide. Anything tbat
helps the valley belpa the town of
Wbite Halmon, therefore we will te
benefited. Tbia also can be said ot
Bingen. Whatever helps this town
and valley Is bound to be ot mateila
advantage to Bingen. And tbere are
other ways in wbiob our little sister
city will be benefited.
Ihey say that "All things come to
those who wait. White Salmon baa
alwaya ooooteided for tbe name ot
tbe atatlon. We were not ao very
particular wbere it waa located, so
long as it waa located wbere we could
get to it in a reasonable distance, but
for tbe benefit of our shippers we
wanted the station called by the nsn e
by welch our fiuit and berrlea are
known in tbe markets ot tbe world
We thought fiom tbe first tbat tbe
name of tbe station should be ours,
but for a long time we were unable to
make any Impression on tbe railroad
company, but alter woiking tbiougb
the atrawberry season tbe company
seem to bave become convinced that it
would be to their advantage to bave
the statiou culled Wbite Salmon.

Ferns Preserve Food.
Cousul Ueoeral Richard Uuentber,
of Frankfort, advises tbat a newspaper
of tbat German city states that tbe
fern plant, which grows almost every
wbeie, is an excellent presrevative for
packing articles of food, fruit, etc.
A summary ot tbe article follows:
r'eople who bave lived in Kngland
bave used it successfully for many
years. Valuable fruit, fiesh butter.
etc., are uo longer seen in tbe English
markets packed in grapevine leaves,
but a most always in fresb fern leaves,
whiob keeps the articles excellently.
Ibis is done wbsre grapevine leaves
are to be had in abuudance. Eveiy-
one posted well in botany knows the
high preservative power of fern leaves
with referenoe to vegetable aud ani
mal substances.
On tbe Isle of Man fresb hen lugs
are packed in ferns and arrive in as
fresh condition us wben tbey are
shipped. Potatoes packed in ferns
keep many mouths longer tban others
packed ouly io straw, Experiment
made with both straw and feru leaves
in tbe same cellar showed surprising
results io favor of ferns. While the
potatoes packed in ttraw mostly
showed signs of rotting in tbe spring,
those in ferns were as fresh as if tbey
had just been dug
Fresh meat is also well preserved by
feir leaves. 1 would seem ss it the
highly preservative qualities ot feru
leaven a e due to their high percent
age of sslt. No larvae, maegots, etc,,
approach ferns, as the strong odot
keeps thciu away.
