William Wolfe, a painter, Insisted
that the flag should float In the
breeze this Independence day, but
Marshal Zimmerman wasn't to be

his club to beat the anarchist into
submission. Wolfe narrowly escaped
mob violence.
To be chosen two years in succes
sion as delegate to the National Jew
elers' Association by the members ot
the Oregon Retail Jewelers' Associa

fallen to Charles H. Williams ot Con
don. Last year Mr. Williams was first
vice-president of the Oregon Jewel
ers' Association ana went as a dele
gate to the National convention in
Chicago, at which time he was elect
ed vice-president of the National or
ganization. The Oregon Railway Commission
is proving an effective agency in the
adjustment of claims by shippers
against railroad companies for over
charges. In a large number of In
stances shippers have complained of
overcharges and the Commission has
taken the matter up with the com
pany, made investigations and se
cured settlements. The claims range
all the way from a tew dollars up to
$50 or $60.
Dr. W. G. Cole, city physician and
state senator, declares that in his
opinion from 10 to 30 per cent of
the dairy cows from which Pendleton
secures Its milk supply are affected
with tuberculosis. Dr. Cole Is also
a believer in the theory that cow tu
berculosis Is tranBinlttable to the hu
man and asBertB that a large percent
age of the tuberculosis caBes are di
rectly attributable to the use of milk
from diseased cows.
After pointing a loaded revolver at
her two sisters and a young man In
turn, Stella McCoy, aged 15, a Grand
Ronde Indian girl, turned the weapon
toward herself and tried to take tbe
cartridges out. She was struck In
the right eye. The bullet went
through to the brain and the Indian
maid died almost lnstsaitly. Three
sisters aurvlve her; she was an or
phan. Tho tragedy happened on the
Grand Ronde.
Charles W. Walton, the young mu
sician, who held up a streetcar in
Portland, In September, 1904, was
sentenced to serve three years In the
State Penitentiary last week. The
crime of which young Walton was
convicted at his last trial was that
of shooting Policeman Olaus Nelson.
On this charee he wag sentenced to
serve nve years, ueaucung nis bi
lowance for good behavior, he had
only three months of that time to
serve when he was brought to Port
land for the new trial.
The Lane County Court was pre
sented with petitions freely Blgned
from different sections of the county
asking them to purchase a portable
sawmill, to be used by the county as
an aid to the building of plank roads
and bridges for the outlying dis
tricts. In Lane county there are
many miles of plank roads and as
the need Is generally In the timbered
districts there would he a great sav
ing to the county by having a port
able Bawmtll which could be taken
wherever planks were required and
the material worked up.
Congressman Hawley has been no
tified by the Commandant of the
United States Marine Corps that
there are 57 vacancies In the grade of
Second Lieutenant and that candi
dates for these positions are desired.
Mr. Hawley will be pleased to com
municate with any young men of his
congressional district who desire to
apply. The position pays a salary of
$1700 a year. Candidates must be
not less than 5 feet 6 Inches tall and
weigh not less than 132 pounds. They
must also pass arequlred mental and
physical examination. The mental
rxamlnation includes Ergllsh, alge
bra, logarithms, geometry, plane trig
onometry and surveying. The candi
date must be from 21 to 27 years of
age.
Laborers Murder Their Foreman.
Missoula, Mont., July 7. Holmes
Hayes, foreman at the St. Paul tun
nel at Taft, near this city, was shot
to death by five Montenegrins in re
taliation for the death of a fellow
countryman last October. Hayes was

Tbe fourth of July celebration came
off as planned, the parade starting
from Hood River at 9:30, and pro
ceeded to C range Park, where the
entire day was spent in a program
which amused the mammoth crowd
all day long. It was a "Sane Fourth,"
unmarrred by disorderly conduct or
socidents oaused by tbe careless use
ot explosives. There was no evidenoe
of drunkeness on the pait of rodles
at the paik, and there was no disoider
of any kind. While there are bat few
of tbe rowdy element In the city or
valley, then were none in evidenoe
Saturday.
Tbe parade was beaded by tbe Hood
River baud, followed by tbe big float
which appeared in tbe parade at the
Rose Festival at Portland, and was
graced by the same lovely queen, Miss
Nlckelseu. Then followed several rigs
of comlo get-ups and oarrlagea aud
automobiles with passengers tor tbe
park, where the program for the day
was carried out. There waa little
attempt made to get up individual
floats, tbe city giving way entirely to
tbe country, and turning out with a
big crowd to assist in tbe oountry
oelebration.
J Everybody was glad they went.
There wns no lack of conveyances,
the automobiles making many trips
to aud from tbe grounds, while sev
eral bulges, besides tbe carryalls of
tbe a tn Ides, were busy taking the
orowds out and back. The .Grange
deserves credit for tbe manner in
which the celebration was suooessfutly
carried out, and it was one of tbe
most sui oesaful oelebrations ever held
iu Hood River, aud the first one in
Hood River county.

at Orange Paik, among them many
Japs who took a lively interest in tbe
affair, in fact one of them delivered
something of an oration in which be
tried to convey the Idea that bis
countrymen understood tbe ieason for
tbe great auuual demonstration eaoh
year nu July 4th by tbe American
pople and were fully in aooord wih it.
After tbe parade in the morning,
the 4th during tbe day in town was as
quiet as Sunday. Those who did not
attend tbe celebration out of town,
for the most part spent the time
quietly at borne. In tbe evening bow
ever, when the crowds commenced to
arrive back in town tbe streets again
presented a lively appearance. Hun
dreds turued out to see tbe fireworks
and most ot those who did not bad a
l"Mi celebration of their own at borne.
About two hundred visitors from
i- rtland spent tbe 4tb at Hood River
.i,auy of them remaining over until
Su day evening and returning to tbe
city on No. I. There were also a
nujiber of visitors here from The
Dalles, Dufur aud other points. The
excursion of tbe ball team to Steven
son took a few from Hood River, but
they returned early in tbe evening to
witness tbe fireworks display and to
take in the danoe at (Jrange Park.
