Interesting Health Talk.
Mrs. O. 13. Hartley very kindly
opened ber home last Thursday after -noon
for Miss New, of Portlmd, wbo
gave a very interesting and helpful
talk on Health and Hygiene.
Miss New is a woman whose won
derful personality makes a good proof
tbat she practises what she preaohes,
as the old maxim reads. She said in
part that there is no degiee of beauty,
intelligence or amiability wbiob can
compensate for a diseased body in a
woman oi man. Indeed, there Is no
beauty, intelligence or amiability
wbiob bad health will not undermine.
Neither wealth, position not oppor
tunity can compensate for the abaence
ot health. Tbe conscientious woruun
bas other reasons than selfish ones tor
feeling bad beatlb to be tbe greatest
of misfortunes. She kuows she can
not be ill without casting a shadow
over the boms thai Bbe would, if she
could, keep always bright. If she baa
oblldreu, she will uot only find herself
unable to give tbeui tbe mental and
moral training tbey need, but si;e may
not be able to bold eveu their admira
tion aod love; and tbe chances are
ten to one that sbe has given them a
hideous heritage of disease. Sbe may
well fear tbat tbe lime fill come when
ber husband will weary of coming
borne to tbe dim room where the in
valid wife is always ailing and will go
elsewhere tbat be may dud tbe high
spirits, tbe physical vigor and tbe en
tertaining vivacity wbirb be is never
able to get in bia on bouie. Mot-t
ot women are unknowingly very un
kind to their family. They think
that rather than take tbe time and
perhaps expenses to take care of tbeui
selvei, they ought to purohate some
t.Mog for the home or perhaps atiord
some new amusemout fnr the son or
daughter. A woman who Is too busy
to take care of herself is like tbe
woikmau wbo Is too busy to sharpen
bis tools. It behooves us as American
women, to take cae ot ourselves, for
q that way, we are benefitting not
only ourselves, but onr husbands, oar
family and tbe woilds wbiob we way
come in contact with. How much
better one feels after talking with a
healthy vigorous woman U an convers
ing with oue tbat who ia depressing
and weary. It is our duty to take cure
of our body tbat kus been not just
given to us as a gi't, as you might
say, but given to us in trust aud if wa
re untrue to that trust, then we will
have to take our punishment, whiob
is ill health.
Miss New spoke for au hour and it
seemed like a lew minutes, for she is
very Interesting aud tbe subjeot was
oue which uot only appealed to
women, but to anyone wbo wa in
aearcb of health.
