An Interview with Mr. Aokermao,
from tbe Oregonian, la printed on an
otber page and eoet into tbe details
of tbe matter.
Tbe Commercial Ulufc of Walla
Walla, Washington, has passed reiolu
tlooa urging the railroad oompanlet
to grant a ona-fare rate for tbe round
trip, by continuoua paaage, between
points In interior Washington and
Oregon and the seaside resorts of
tbese two states. It is understood
that the club also favors a higher rate
when stop over privileges are allowed
The Walla Walla Club has lequested
the commercial bodies of Kaatern
Oregon, Waabington and Idaho, as
well as tbe Commercial Club of Port
land, to pass similar resolutions. It
is hoped that favorable action may
be taken by all, bs tbe people of tbe
Interior should be given the oppor
tunity of visiting the coast, especially
during tbe summer months, at the
least possible coat.
No announcement made In recent
years has been more Interesting to tbe
state at large than tbe publication of
tbe plans of tbe Oregon Electric Hail
way company, which means a system
aggregating 381 miles In length and
reaching tbe principal towns of tbe
entire Willamette Volley, with au ex
teosiin to the coast as well. Mc
M I ud vill, Newber. Dallas, Kutfoue,
Allmny, Ctuoadla, Hill horo and Till
nrnook. with lunuiue-alile other com.
uiuuities, are included. 'Ibe Hue be
tween FortNiiil and Salem ha re
calved moll excellent putioiiiigo that
on serarnl diltereut occasions it baa
bueu ueoetuary to revise the schoilule
to accommodate additional train?.
In tbe eastern states the multiplica
tion of 1 1 alley lines has deoreased
the paFsenger trntllti ou tbe steam
roads, but tbe latter bav felt so
inurked au iuureaae iu freight tratllo
that tbe passeuger loss has been more
thau oompeuauted in earnings.
At a meeting of tbe fiuit growers of
tbe Handy Valley last week for tbe
purpose of organizing a fruit growers'
association, the Uresbam Herald com
ments as follows, and la not satisfied
with calling their apples "as good as
flood River," but claims tbey are
better. It says:
"Fruit raised iu tbe Sandy Valley,
and especially apples, are of a quality
at preteut that is not equaled even in
tbe Hood Kiver Valley. But tbe ap
ples raised at the latter place are
old at metropolitan markets at about
twioe what Handy apples ot better
quality are sold for in tbe same mar
ket. Tbii all comes from tbe name
and publicity received by tbe organ
ization of fruit growers and tbeir pow
er to oompel all to spray and prune,
and thus raise a quality of fruit that
would Justify the name given."
The action of tbe fruit growers of
the Sandy Valley In organizing for
better results is commendable and
the Herald may be pardoued for its
error iu judgment Iu thinking it has
the bent apples In tbe world, as we
understand that be has never been in
the Hood River Valley 01 seeu a Hood
Kiver apple, but tbe dIBerenoe be
tween a Hood Rivei apple and one
raised somewhere else which is "just
as good," or "even better," is about
a dollar a
River.
box, In favor of Hood
An attempt Is being made by the
enemies of the University of Oregon
to oreute prejudice against tbe appro
priation bill through misrepresenta
tion. They claim that the uuiverslty
hires a football coach at 11,500 for a
little more than two mouths' "in
struction." Asa matter ol fact the
university has nothing to do with the
hiring of a ooaob, other than to see
that be is tbe right kind of man.
Neither have tbe students ever paid
11,500 for a coacb and farther the
coach's salary Is paid entirely from
tbe gate receipts of such games as tbe
ones with tbe Oregon Agricultural
College and Multnomah. Tbey say
that tbe increase In tbe appropriation
la 300 per cent, when tbey know that
the university has received 178,500
for the past two years and tbe In
crease can only be 59 per cent. Even
if tbe one item of 917,500 of tbe old
appropriation bill were taken, tbe in
crease would be only a little over baif
of what tbey claim. Tbey say also
that tbe university baa shown bad
faith in pushing this bill by going to
tbe courts on technicalities. As a
matter of record the enemies of tbe
university were tbe first to appeal to
the courts, when tbe secretary of state
refused to Die tbeir petitions and lat
er carried tbe case to the supreme
court. Tbe friends of the university
have appealed to tbe courts only
once, and then when the title was
manifestly unjust and misleading.
Those are but examples ot tba misrep
resentation need by the opposition
throughout tbeir arguments.

Tbe editor is iudebted to I ugh Mo

of the direotors of the club, for an
Inspection of tbe bnildiog, and can
truthfully say that tbe building is one
of the finest in Portland and tbe new
quarters of the club will be one of the
attractions of tbat city, not only fci
its own members, but tor the out of
town vlsitois who are fortunate
enough to be Invited guests of tbe

tbe parlors, lounging room, etc, are
marvels in themselves. The decora

Ashland Will Help.
During the visit of E. L. Smith to
Ashlaud recently be paid tbe follow
ing compliment to tbj city, as report
ed by the Tidings, In which tbat pa
per also complied with a request to
say a good word for Hood River
county :
'You Ashland people have good
reason to boast nf your flue water
and your attractive parks. In tact
yon certainly have the moat attractive
residenoe city In this seotiuu, if not
tbe prettiest home t iwu In tbe inter
ior of Oregon." said Hon. E. L.
Smith, tbe well known horticulturist
of Hood Kiver, after taking a drive In
and about the olty with lion. K. V.
Carter, Friday. They went out to
see the Helms apple orchard, took in
tbe orchards In the environs of tbe
oity and some of tbe picturesque
points about Ashland.
Mr. Smith, accompanied by his
wife, oame out from Hood Kiver last
week, to visit his daughter, Mrs. Nel
son, and family bere. lie was the
pioneer commercial apple grower In
the Hood Kiver Valley and set out
the first commercial orchards there.
Tbe old residents shook their beads
and thought be waa crazy, but soon
all of them wanted to plant orchards
aud the Hood Kiver Valley is now a
veritable apple orchard aud straw
berry patch. Mr. Smith baa always
been favorably Impressed with the
Hogue Kiver Valley since bis first vis
it bera yeart ago.
Mr. Smith asked tbe Tidings to call
attention of tbe voters of tbie seotion
to the faot that tbey will be called
npon at tbe coming June election to
pass upon, uudoi tbe initiative, a bill
for tbe creatiou ot Hood Kiver oounty
out of Wasco. Tbe proposed division
ot the oouuty, which baa been a
source of contention In tbe past, bas
now been aruicatly agreed udou, be
says, and all parties directly concern
ed are in favor of i1. The voters of
the entire state under present laws of
Oregou must, however, pass upon the
measure, aud Hood Kiver aud Wasoo
people want tbetn to do it intelligent
ly aud with tbe understanding that
everybody there Is In favor now of
tbe new couuty.

To help Taft and Cake, Senator C.
W. Fulton baa sont bis private secre

to open headquarters. These were
opened at rooms 001 and 60S Im

personal friends, and tba senator
wants to do all be can to assist tbe
secretary of war in lining up a Chi
cago delegation. Fulton's headquar
ters will also do whatever possible to
promote the Interests of Cake. This
is a combination which is satisfactory
to Fulton's friends, aud when the

number ot ardent Fulton people called
to lesrn in wbat way tbey could be ot
assistance.
It is not intended by Fulton to dic
tate tbe politics of tbe state In open
ing headquarters for Taft, says bis
