While we are all interested iu the
Krov'tb and Hdvancenieut ot our city
we tire also plunged to learn, through
the kindness cf the officers of the 1 m
proveuiout Club of Underwood, Wash
lnnton, that our sister ettte has awuk
ene 1 to the fact that in the White
Salmon Kiver Valley, directly across
the river from us, she has an ini
mense fruit Hionintf trict with a wou
dertnl future. The (alley bax been
greatly tiHijdioappad in the past on
HRCouut of Imvintf been obliged to
team its product HCros8 the iOO 'oot
divide to the White Salmon landing
for sliipineut. A new toad, built by
piivHtb subscriptions, has been com
pleted, following the White Salmrn
liver by a very gradual down grade
directly to its mouth, at which point
ia located Uudei wo. d. The bui id i iitf
of tbe S P. 't S. railroad depot at
this point opens a new era in tbe de
velopment ot this section 1'ruit
mowing is, however, no experiment
in this section, us the following fig
ures gathered by tie club from its in
dividual growers will show:
Shipped iu 1U07, peaches, boxes,
'2'j'o; straw heme?, crates, 12802 ; uu
ples, 27:15.
EjtiuiHied for 1908, pencbes, boxes,
70' 10 ; straw buries, crttes, 48150; ap
ple. 9150.
j be above figures cover only the t"r
litory on Uudei wood tint and tor
three to four miles along the river
valley, with tlie exception of the item
of apples, 7000 boxes of which will
come tbiii seas-ou from the orchard of
Morriacai Jones at liusum, six miles
up the liver, and it include only
those who ate absolutely obliged to
ship through Underwood either to
tbe unions in l'ood Hirer or via the
North ISnnk road 'Ihis is a new
country, but hundreds of acres are
being set this year to fruit tiees and
hemes.
At a recont meeting the name of the
progressive club, numbering now
nearly 100 members, was changed
from the Underwciid Improvement
Club to that ot tbe Under ood and
White Salmon Valley Improvement
(.'lub, as the majority as wer) us
mauy of its most wideHwake and pro
gressive members are from mills up
tbe rivr, in the middle valley, and
tho new gateway through Underwood
to transported ion facilities has been
roade possible to a great exteut by
their elf oris.
At the close of the hft meeting of
the club an organization known us
the White Salmon Valley Fruit Clr w
era' Association was formed with the
election ot olllcers deferred for two
weeks, ihis is a strictly commercial
organization to which horticultural
features may be added later. It is
computed only of actual fruit growers
and with the object of securing au
honest and uniform pack. Kuuliziug
that Hood Kiver's enviable reuututinu
is due to a great extent to tbe honesty
of her pack, this association feels she
nay be pardoned for copying her
method s.
Ti e hesdijuaiters of this association
are at Underwood, only one mile from
Hood Kiver, and there is no question
but what our soil, climate, conditions
and fruit aie identical. We trust we
may keep our fruit to the same stand
ard of perfection and it was for this
purpose that tbe club was organized.
Mordecai Jones has seemed lOOxilK)
feet adjoining the railroad track on
which he will eieot a cold sto:age
plant immediately. Ilia immense or
chard has only commenced to bear,
but it ;a believed and hoped that he
will erect a sufficiently large plant to
CHre for the hundreds of acres of oth
er orchards scon to come into bear
ins. The recent, advertisement in the
special local fruit edition of Hotter
fruit is bringing to tho Improvement
Club eiKiuiries from nil parts of the
United States and we believe that tbe
next two or three years will see a
greu'er change iu our valley than has
taken place in the past 20 or 30 years.
