aration of the excellent bauquet giveo
by the ladies. The guests begsu ar
riving on the morning trainsaud were
met at the depot by a committee.
After the welcome at the depot they
were escorted to the Mt. Hood Hotel,
where a special luucb bad been pro
vided, after which six automobiles
were plaoed at tbeir disposal and tbsy
were taken for a ride through the val-

the address ot welcome and it was
done with the utual eloquence of Mr.
Smith and greeted wlto loud applause.
Grand Commander Miller made the
principal address ottbe evening. His
speeob was listened to with marked
attention, and when be siid that the
warden ; W. J. Baker, warder; E. L.
grand otlloeis were well pleased with
their reception at Hood lilver it waa
evident thut he voiced the sentiments
of all tbe visitors as well and that the
remark wns uot merely a oomplimen-1
tary one. He said that he bad no
doubt that Hood River Commsndery
bad started off with tbe best ot pros

Deputy Orand Commander Knapp
was tbe next speaker find aald that be
bad oontession to make. When be
first received the petition tor a new
commandery at Hood River be was
rather surprised that a small town up
tbe river from Portland should pre
sume to ask for such a thing. He bad
never been to Hood River, but did
not consider it able to support a com
mandery as it should, liut when
tbe Hood River delegation waited
upon the committee aud made their
arguments be thought thut perhaps
Hood River was able to take care of
herself, but he still bad some doubts
as to tbe wisdom of it all until he
came to Hood River, lie said be
wanted to own that be had been mis
taken, lie was now fully satisfied
that we oould take oare of ourselves,
and would be one ot tbe bast com
mandeiiea in the state.
Oram) Reooider h'obinson was In
troduced as tbe first Eminent Com
mander ot tbe first Commandery in
Oregon. Mr. Robinson responded In
a pleasing manner and said that be
was well pleased wltb tbe prospeoti
for Hood River Commandery. He
bad attended tbe Institution of every
commandery in tbe state, and expect
ed to attend as long aa be lived. He
said tbat Hood River bad started out
with tbe best prospects of any.
W. C. Bristol was Intro luoed as the

"baby" sir knight of tbe state, hav
ing just taken tbe degrees. He made
a very pleasant talk, along hnmorous
as well as serious lines, and bis re
marks were well received.
Capt. Crandall waa tbe next speaker
and wound up bis remarks with a
glowing tribute to the ladies who bad
labored so laltbloliy in planning ana
serving tbe One banquet, and sug
gested that Mrs Laraway, the chair
man of tbe committee, be culled opon.
Mrs Larawsy responded In a few

Mrs. Harry Bailey . as also called
upon as tbe bead of the Eastern Star
