GREEN CHINA CRAZE.
Savrts Uses Two 8hades, the Familiar)
Qrass and Apple Tints.
It la the day of tbe specialist, even
la china collecting. The field was
found too vast to be covered by one
collector, who realized that, though art
might be long, her purse was not, and,
moreover, time was fleeting. So here
nnd tboro arose the being who decided
to ninko one particular branch her own
and to cleave to that only. Blue and
white naturally fouud most votaries to
begin with till the more enterprising
branched off Iuto other color schemes,
of which green and wbite was tbe
most attractive. But green is a color
which has always fallen under tbe ban
of being considered unlucky by 'the su
perstitious, and superstition la a bard
nut to crack. Still, fashion surmounts
all obstacles, and gradually we see the
votaries of green china in the ascend
ent. Incidentally the same thing is
happening to prices. Green china of
the right tint does not now have to
wait long upon tbe order of its going.
Tbe supply is not equal to the demand.
It la a fascinating pursuit and a most
decorative object when found, for,
though it looks its best massed to
gether in bold groups, it mingles well
with other china, which cannot be said
for tbe old favorite, blue and white.
But It is exigent in its background
and surroundings. It calls loudly for
white walls and chintz furniture and
a somewhat countrified aspect general
ly, for most of the china In which
green predominates la decorated with
old fashioned posies of country flowers
rosea and gllliflowers, stocks and
pansles.
Tea services with wide shallow cups,
dessert services, quaint jugs, vases and
delightful baskets form tbe usual treas
ure trove. Bowls are few and far be
tween; specimen pieces are far to
seek. Oreen was a good wearing, use
ful, everyday color, nature's own liv
ery, and so the potters employed It
for their most ordinary, commonplace
articles, but not always. Sevres and
Cholsea employed green as the body
color on some of tbeir most gorgeous
vases and pieces, destined often as
offerings to kings, princes and tbe
great ones of the earth.
