although Mr. Wood delivered very in

Mr. Morgaosou, of Tygb Vallty,
was here last week visiting friends.
Mrs. Wintber left Thursday for
Portland, a ter a stay on tbeii home
stead, Mr. Wintber buing a barber
there.
E. L. Howe, of Portlnud, was up
last week overseeing tbe work on bis
farm. Mr. Howe baa a log bouse uu
dei construction now, tbe logs being
unbewed.

Hood River last Thursday.
J. C. Thomas, of Portland, was up
last Wednesday and beiug so much

of Portland, weie up looking over tbe

Meadamea Bartlett and Churchill,

at tbe country with the intention of
investing here.
Oue of the swell dances of tbe sea
son was a masquerade gitren Saturday
evening at tbe ball hy (Jeorge Cham
berlain. The music was furnished by
Frank Middlewart and Lee Hunter.
The prizes were won by Adaline Sell
ioger as Sister of Charity and Ben
Bellinger as base ball player. Tbeie
were about 40 present and all report a
good time.
Miss Anna Oodberson went lo Ibe
Dailea Monday on Jthe local and re
turned the same day.
Mrs. Sam Stark came down from
Tbe Dalles Monday to visit relatives.
Mt. Hood Development League.
Tbe regular meeting of tbe Mt.
Hood Development League bold last
Tuesday evening wan well attended
and piored interesting to all.
Tbe road committee reported that
work waa progressing at both ends of
tbe new roud under the watchful eye
of Supervisor Hood, tbe roadway hav
ing been cleared out for over a mile,
considerable grubbing done and some
grading, in the opinion of tbe coin
mittee tbe grade when completed will
be one of the easiest and best In the
valley, and the road nay praotioally
dust less and shady almost- its entire
length. It is hoped that the road will
" be made at least usable with tbe funds
to be at command when all subset ip
tlons will bave been collected and
tbe county appropriation uiude. It la
proposed to notify all subscribers, if
necessary, that subscriptions may be
paid at Butler & Co 'a bHtik, where
receipts for fame wll be Left and de
livered to the subscribers wben the
amounts are paid. In this way it is
hoped to avoid again approaching the
signers aod tbe expen e of eolioiting.
With tbe money made available at
once, work will be vigorously pushed
and all possible done while men and
teams can be secured. Some dismis
sion was held relatiug to means of se
ourlng reliable information for use by
tbe league, in answering correspond
ents and in preparing a booklet to be
published as soon as sufficient data
can be brought together. Tbe secre
tary read a proposed form of question
beet to be delivered to each resident
of tbe upper valley with a request

proposal was adopted and tbe sheets
ordered irom tbe printer.

The adjourned meeting of tbe com
mon connoil was held Thursday even
ing and routina business transacted.
A letter wa-i received from attorneys
of Mr. Smith statwia-lbat the city had

Farmers irrigating Co. to lay pipes
on tbe bill for Irrigating purposes.

Mayor Blowers stated that be bad a

disoussion of the matter Counoilmen
Hershner, Wright and Hall were ap:
pointed as snob committee.
Tbe resolution passed at a previous
meeting requiring that bills be laid
over until the- second meeting of the
month for investigation, was rescind
ed, and a new resolution passed that
tbe finance committee meet witb tbe
lecorder and marshal one-bait .hour
before tbe first regular meeting of
eaob month to audit the billa.

there was no furniture in- tbe bouse

from the Spear place, Which is being
tested by the street commissioner,
and it was regarded as of 'excellent
quality. '
The street committee waa not pre
