COMPANY REPLIES
After the circular addressed to tbe
Hood River Farmers Telephone Co.,
signed by a commit tee ocmposed of J.
W. Moots and A. C. S'ateu.came into
promioeuce, tliu liouie Telephone Co.
was interested to lind uul if tbe oon
ditiona as set fortb In tbe report of
this oommittee were wholly true.
Tbe following letter is the result:
Portland, Ore., Feb. 20, 1908.
Mr. P. S Duridaon, iio'id River, Ore.
Dear Sir: In oompliance with your
request of the 17th instant 1 went to
Oregon City aud made tbe iuvertiga
tiou of tbe statements contained iu
tbe circular addressed to "Ibe Hood
Rivei Farmers Telephone Co." and
signed A. C. Stateu.
(undated) J. W. Moore,
and beg leave to report as follows:
First: As to tbe equipment and ser
vice botb were satUfaototy.
These statements roter to both tbe
"Paoitio States telephone & Telegraph
Co." and tbe "Hon. e Telephone Co."
1 fouud a vastly different opinion
among tbe people wbo lined botb
phones. While tbe Home Company
rendered almost perfect service to its
patrons, tbore was an almost uuirer
sal disgust with that rendered by the
Pacific States Co , because of tbe in
efficiency, tai dines in answering clip,
particularly long distance ones, it re
quiting anywhere from "bait au hour
to half a day" to tcci.re o mnectiona
so one oould transact any business
and then tbe service rendered was
very lmperteot. Ou the contrary the
service of tbe Home Telephone Co.
was always prompt, ellloient and
oourteous, and in every way satisfac
tory; all the time required was invar
iably given to its patrons aid no in
ter feienoe by operators butting lu
with "waiting," "ain't you niont
through, " etc
Both companies bave up-to-date
equipment.
Secoud : When the Home Company
went Into Oregon City to establish its
plant it fouud a small system there
that bad been put in by three or four
of the citizens, ben.' use of the very
poor service tlmt was being rendered
by tbe Paoitio States Company. This
system was taken over by tbe Home
Company and at that lime there were
just tbiity-five (35) phones in use
through the system and five of these
were "dead head" phones.
Tbe Home Company now have, st
this date iu working order and daily
use, lu tbe city
107 phones,
bave all their wires under ground,
laid in conduits and in first-class
sbape, have over six hundred (GOO)
subscribers that come into their office
and the numbei is dally on the in
oreasn. These subsoil hers are from
tbe auirounding country aud ate par
tially as follows:
Molalla, 105.
Beaver Creek, 200.
Clear Creek, 100.
Total, 405.
Taggartvllle, 200 Now being con
nected up. ,
Logan, Redland, New Era. Mi'x
burg, Uauby, and utiitr poiute thrnwuli
out tbe Willamette Valley. Connec
tions with tbe principal cititH in the
valley aie no'v to be IihiI In Albany
there are the following connections:
City, 300.
Farmer, 200
Corvallin Farmets, 2M; city, 5'j0,
Lctimioii, Soda Springs, Sal. ,u,
VVocdbi.rn, Marquam and n,ir.y
othtrd, and tbe system Is being ia id
ly extended.
All tbe tanners who do ImibIiiosh
with Oregon City are oouuected up
with tbe Home Company, and will
not ue the Paoitio State Company
uudei any consideration becnuso ot
tbe past treatmeut accorded them.
The Home plant at Oregou City is,
as heretofore stated, an up-to-ilnte
one. Ibe buainesa Is increasing in a
satisfactory rute and degree, while
tbat of the Pact Ho States, 1 am in
formed, is decreasing.
Third: As to phones being taken
out of places where they have be n
installed: When the Home Company
started out aft r tbe business they
had eolicittvs who worked solely up
on com mi- h;u aud they (the solici
tors) made all sorts i t promises to
secure signed contracts upon which ta
oolloot their pay and the oompauy
would not stand for all they promised,
but oontinued service for ail phones
free ot charge for some three mouths
or more, wben they then oommeuced
to make a charge, and thirty (30)
phones were taken out from those
plaoes where patties would only ao
oept "something for nothing "
ibe statement tbat "many of the
largest business homes bad uevet
made use of the Home phone, eto ,
among them tbe Willamette Pulp and
Paper Company:"
The faota are that the Willamette
Pulp and Paper Company bave a pn
vate line in the city exteudiug to
tbeir attorney's office and they sel
dom bave use fcr anythiug but long
distauoe communications ami then
nearly exclusively witb their office in
San Fianoisoo. Cel., aud I have it
upon good authority that thoy would
gladly have left tbeir name out of all
tbe teleobone directories ueoause or
tbe nuisance of having their men fre
quently called to the phone during
business
Fourth : The Paqilic States Company
directory ot tbe latest date shows
that it has tie following number of
phouea in service:

Fifth: Replying to tbe f How ing:
"The chief cause of He less of tbe
Home CO't any in uuo tu tba fact
tbat they bave not sufficient subscrib
ers in Portland aud other outside
cities, eto."
Upon tbia date, February 19, 1908,
there aie in the city ot Portland 7,
189 phonea lu actual servioe and oier
7,000 more contracted for, in tb city,
and instruments are being installed
for use at tbo rate of 100 per week;
and the kn distance service is now
oriwded and additional facilities are
being arranged for to meet the In
creating demand.
Sixth : Tbe rates of tbe Home Com
pany are slightly higher than those
of tbe Paclflo States, but they are
williugly paid beoauae ot tbe more sat
iafactory service.
Ihe Home rates are as follows:
City, business phones, 11.75 per
month, less 25 cents, $1.50.
Four party line, residenco, 11.50
per month, less 25 cents, $1.25.
Two party line, residence, $1.75
per month, lets 25 cents, $1.50.
Farmers, 10 on a line, $2 per year.
Farmers build tbeir own lines, own
and care for them up to tbe city lim
its where the Home Company takes
them iu on its regular lines, the
fartueia purchase their instruments
and own them, paying from $10 to
$12 for them.
Tbe Paoitio States are:
City, business, $2.50 per mouth.
Two party line, residence, $1.50 per
month.
Seventh: The bunks aud most of the
business bouses bave botb phones and
say tbat tbey cannot do business with
out botb.
Eighth: Tbe interviews obtained
from the following parties will give
you some idea ot tbe estimate in
which botb companies are held by tbe
business men of Oregon City, and
they each and every one have given
me permission tn quote them:
County Assessor lames F. Nelson :
"Service and aooommooatiun of the

I find tbat mote people are daily gel

Doctor W. E. Carll, mayor:
"I bave both phones, bave to have

of tbe prompt and ettloient service,
enpeolally tbe long distance. I con

Mr. E. O. Canfleld, cashier Oregon

"We have both phones, could not

for the Home phone witb our coun

Home can get iu operation. "
Mr. C. H Huntly, Huntly Bros ,
druggists, member state legislature:
"lhe Home Company is by all odds
the only satisfactory company. We
bave both phones, bave to have 'em to
attend to our country business. Tbe

our long distauoe business, for
through Portland we can reach tbe

To Whom It May Concern:
Corvallia bas the best local tele
phone system and servioe of any town
in its class on the coast, if not In the
couutry. It is tbe Independent sys
tem, it entered this field amid pre
dictions by looal residents that it
would be sure to fail. Its growtb bas
been marvelous bet ause its service baa
been perfect, it baa practically elim
inated the Pacifio States phone in tbia

office and get 25 t.i 100 calls a day on

To Whom It May Concern :
Une of tbe boasts of Corvallls and
Bentou county is ber fine telephone
system. We think we bave tbe beat
service in tbe state and we take pride
in telling strangers of it. It ia the In
dependent system and it has practic
ally replaced the old service. There
ia no division of opinion iu Corvaliis,
tbe Independent is tbe proper thing.
Yours very truly,
Robt. Johnsnu,
Seo'y. Corvaliis Commercial Club.
