HOOD RIVER APPLES
IN SOUTH AMERICA
Uaao A. Manning writes follows
to tba Salem Statesman from Carta
sens, Ooloiubla, Booth America:
"No one who baa apent all bla Ufa
in the ama neck of wood! can imag
ine the pleasure one who ia away from
borne reels at encountering an oio
friend where least expected, bat wben
tbis condition meets one absence
from borne and tba old friend oome
toaetber it certainly ia noteworthy.
1 remember recently, just aa I was
gniug aboard a steamer lying at the
pier here, 1 met at the foot of tbe
gangway an old friend fiom Nicara
gua We bad no idea of meetlog, for
be did not know I waa bare and 1
bad little thought but that be waa
still In tbe mountain town of Matagai
pa, where 1 bad left blm In 1903.
That we passed a pleasant evening
tnsetber is not to be wondered at.
ills nooounts of all tbe happenings
among oar friends there Interested
tie sreatlv and we Intereated him by
abowing him some of tbe sights of
this quxint old oity.
lint this by way of preface.
Ibis afternoon my wife and I were
visiting some friends here, enjoying
a cup of afternoon tea, wben wa bad
another great surprise and pleasure
This could only be appreciated by an
Orflguuian who bad been deprived of
Oregon apples for a rather long time.
It seems that a box of apples had
lieou sent to tbe plermastei here by
the Atlas Steamship manager at New
Vnrk, for a New Year ottering, nd
the lady we were visiting gave us a
le. And they were Hood River ap
ples I Newtown Pippins and prime
in quulityt Tbey were beautifully
packed, each apple wrapped separate
ly, and could have been no better
when tbey first oarue from the tree.
And rlxbt bera I want to commend
tbe II nod ttiver packers for their
careful manner of patting tbelrpples
on tbe market, and to say that tbla
is tbe limit luiportnut thing, next to
proving good fruit, iu tbe apple
bfirtinetis. X'bH la alao true of every
thing eke. Well-packed fruit carries
well, looks won tn tbe market and
Hula good customers. Iba grower
ami shipper profit by careful atten
tion to this feature aud J am sure the
Hood Kiver apple growers will con
tinue to find their business profitable
do long as tbey pay attention to tbis
feature of tbe apple business aud no
longer.
I haro had occasion to Bud fault
with bud packing and alao with
"short weights," In soma articles ex
ported from the United States to
these oouutrles, bat 1 am glad to
have no complaint to make of Oregon
products, as yet, except lu that there
are very few of them to be found
here. One thing 1 have not found
dere la tba Oregon prone, the local
demand rather being for an inferior
Kreuoh product, largely, no doubt,
because the Oregon product Is little
known or not at all.
1 recently made a report on tbis
very matter aud hope It will reaob
Oregon prune growers. Our weatern
products are almost unknown over on
this aide, except oauned salmon, and
i guess that is found pretty much
everywhere in tbe world.
