The Dalles Attends With a Special

It was a contest in which a great
deal of interest was taken by both

Ever since Hood UWer won the de

year ago. It is said they were coached
by legal talent of high ability, while
the Hcod River boys bad no assist
auce outside of their own ettorts.
Rote tides made a good showing,
and the majority of the Hood River
Hudienoe were surprised at the decis
ion while even many of The Dalles
crowd admitted they weie equally
surprised to reoeive the decision. Yet
the defeat is taken graoefally by Hood

was furnished the school children,
aud over 100 students and others earns
down from The Dalles about live
o'clock Friday afternoon, together
with their High School band. Xbe
crowd thronged through the streets,
visiting the progiessiva stores of the
city, aud after supper went op to the
ball, where 100 seats bad been re
served tor them In advanoe. A (ew
minutes after the floors opened there
was not a vacant obsir. and the late
comers bad to stand.

the Government Should Own and Op
erate the Railways of the United

(lurry Nitsohke was leader of the
affirmative for The Dalles, and the
Urst orator of the evening. He out
lined the argument for bis aide, and
made a good talk, although laboring
urnier the enects or recent illness,
aud threfore somewbst nervous.
The opposition was led by Hurler
Cash, of Hood River, who at once
proved himself the principal orator of
the evening. He stated bis side ot
the case in a clear, oonsica manner.
and the debate was started witb in
creased interest. Mr. Cash bad the
advantage ot the others on bia side 00
acount of previous experience and a
natural iltness for the platform. He
made a good impression, and in the
opinion of the majority of the audi
enoe, the negative was having the best
or the argument.
llsi Jennie Millioan was tha sec
ond speaker tor The Dalles. She is
an experisuoed debater, has a good
address, pleant voice, and ber argu
ment snowed oonsideisble preparation
and study.
Merrill Oessliug followed for Hood
River, and his talk was of moderate
length and tj the point.. He direoted
several points of saioaam towards bis
opponents, and while it created mer
riment, may not have wen tbe favor
from the judges that was intended,
yet bis points were well taken.,
Ray Harper was tbe third apeakei
for The Dulles, and he bandied bis
subject witb confidence, and made a
good impression.
Karl Outbank then took tbe plat
form, and bis argument was one of
faots, showing a good deal of study
and a knowledge of the subject which
should have clinched tbe battle for
Hood River He was under the die-
advactag however, of a weak voice,
many in tne dbck part or the nail not
being able to bear all of his discourse.
Hurley Cash olosed the argument
for the negative. In a masterly wsy
be presented a dear, forceful argu
ment, citing opinions from learned
men to prove his side of tbe case, and
in the raattei of points, Hood River
bad tbe best of the srgument, la the
opinion ot tbe audience. 1
Harry Nitsobke closed tbe argu
ment for Tbe Dalles. - He presented
many arguments that suggested tie
help from . older beads, yet tbe audi
ence was uot yet convinoed, and the
decision showed that but two of the
three judges were won over to tbe
side of the affirmative. '
The judges were Prof. Robinson and
Prof. White, of Portland, and Prof.
Bryant, of Moro. . , ,
The result of tbe decision was fol
lowed by a chorus of yells And music
from The Dalles band, and the crowd
dispersed. A large crowd of . Hood
Kiver students escorted their viotori
ous opponents to their special train,
which did not pull out until after tbe
departure of the night trains from
Portland. A One banner wnion
adorned the side of a cosoh on the
Hicoial train was torn from its fasten
iugs by tbe local contingent, and tbe
irophy was fastened to the yard arm
of tbe semaphore at the depot, to tbe
effect that at least some of tbe laurels
had been w rested vfrom their oppon
ents.
A dov. with tbe Hood River colors
attached, was liberated soon after tbe
speaking commenced, and attracted
atteutlon from the debate during tbe
evening by flying from one part of tbe
room to tbe other.
Tbe Dalles Chronicle was represented
by Mrs.. I. M. Filloon, ss staff oorres
pondent, and gave the affair muob
publicity in that paper of the follow
ing day. in speaking of tbe impres
tiou of tje oity after tbelr arrival,
she raid :
