RAWSON & STANTON. Hood River. Or. NINETY-FIVE ACRES YIELD 35,000 BOXES 1 lie Dumas orchard, at Dayton, Wash., comprising 05 acres of hearing apple treoH, thin year prnduoed a crop ( i about 115,000 boxes. It is a wcuder i il yluld (or that aection of the coun try, and enpeoially good from the fart that the entire orohaid was in full hearing, practically not a tree but which wan loaded. It is one of the tow orchards in that part of the coun try which is beiug taken care of as a (K-nimoreml proportion. Ilia big shortage in the crop all over the east, and consequently high prions, induced W. N. White &, Co. to bid a good pi ice for the crop, which we understand wis $1.35 per box, f. o. b. cars, it delivered by tho I itlur pntt of Novemuor. On account j tlif thortuge of cars but 20.OU0 box- had been shipped when the date oxpired, nud Mr. White cancelled the contract. Mr. Ducuhs intends to bring suit against the railroad compa ny fur his Iosh. The slump iu the apple market of New York, on account of the financial situation, tor anything in the apple linn except chnice, while it bag not materially ali'euted Hood River ap ples, lias made ooutraots at other places not very desiiaole, There are no storage warehouses iu that part of the country for holding applet, and they will hiivo to be shipped out for whut they will bring. Theie have l 'on tons and tons of apples in eas n:u Washington in the wheat country whiob weie not picked U all, but left to lot on the ground, r as fend for the bogs. The big price oceived Shin yeur (for that seotlou) by Mr. Dumas, however, has caused considerable interest among the farm ers, and it is said that there will be a good many acres set out next spring to applos. Their bust grades appear tu be the Jonathan and Rome lieauty, these two varieties growing to perfec tion, while other varieties are more or less inferior. While there is no in dication of disease among the trees iu the old orchards, they are badly in fested witb scale, aphis and codlin tnoth, owing to neglect. H. (. Campbell, of Uood River, has boeu superintending the packing iu speotiou and shipping of the apples, and is still buying apples noith of Walla Walla for Mr. White, lie states that many of the farmers who have a carload or two of fail apples, would not sell them beoause they did not care to have the trouble of bunting up pioKeta and gathering the fruit. Most of the farmers have large aoie age of wheat, are well to do, and pay mile attention to anything else. Arrested On a Uravc Charge. u. ii. bhiuuyo, ueii r known as Hurt Halnave, was arrested in 1'riue villa last Thursday atternoou, charged with sending obscene letters through the mails. A number of girls, whose age would range somewhere between 12 and 11 years, received letters of an lnorimluatiug nature and the matter was placed iu the bauds of Sherilt El kins, who took the youug man iu cus tody. Home of the letters were signed witn a nccitious name, pretlxlug Mrs, to tho initial signature, but always giving the same number of postotllue (jox lor answers. The young man cau be tried by both me state ana lederai authorities. There is this ditlereuce. however. that the peualty is much more severe ir convicted under Indictment by Uti ole Saw. Under state laws, if convictiou fol lows, the penalty is a $ 1500 flue and r term in the state penitentiary, eithor both, at the discretion of the court. The federal laws provide a penalty of not more than a J50U0 flue and for nut moro than five years iu the peni tentiary, either or both at the discre tion of the presiding judge. The i:ot.jlllce authorities will take I lie case up first. An inspector is now on tho way to Prluevlllo to take the nine iu baud. He is expected here to day or tomonow. Crook County uuuruil, "Advertising 'l'u;s. M osier has recently done a good elroko of advertising for its truil growing industry. A lot of Portland bmiuess men wore invited to visit the ji-osier valley, nud a flue lot of the i o.-t bind of adveitising was obtained. . groat deal of this advertising was of ilia Kind commouly called free be rnnso tho newspapers without charge published many things which helped un reputation or (Hit prosperous dis trict. Well, it was a harmless sort of battle, anyway, and its outcome baa proved what the wUe ones have known all along, namely, that the production of a llift el. in apple crop in Oiegon depends upon energy intelligently applied, rather than upon locati u.
