SHORTAGE OF 8,000,000 BARRELS
nlw tlistanding Tight Money Market,

Now lork, November 8. Notwith

tight money situation there baa been
a good steady dciuaud for apple wheo

e in oo prices on stock desirable for ex
port markets Is still too high to admit
ot oven smnll pront to the exporter,
In addition to the high cost of the
fruit the question of tight money is a
oosMerutioii that has worked towards
lejsoucd volume o buying by large
interests. itie anxiety among ship
pers fcr ready cash has hIsj been the
oiiiito ot some considerable ihltments
trom the upper sections ot the state,
but as this fiuit in general has been
of good quality no ditlioulty has been
experienced lu seouriug top figures.
A factor that promises to cut con
ileiabie tlgure before the present
stnsoo is fur udranoed is the fact that
t Lo total hiiiiIo crop of ibe United
Status instead of bolng 32,000,000 bar
rels, as win previously estimated, will
not run over 21,000,000 barrels. The
shortiige in suoh oo'nmeroial apple
sections as western New York, nearly
all of iMiohigau aud the entire south
west, bus boon the cause of the heavy
buying by t ho trade In the great mid
dle tterft. The impression hero is that
whilo New Voik has a good many ap
ples they will till be needed to meet
the requirements ot the trade locally
without taking into uooount the de
innud from the markets of Europe.
Thero is, generally Epeaklng. a con
siderable linying of fruit going on
even now for the buyers in the west.
aud a report from lioobester on
l'htirsday stated that sevetal carloads
ot late varieties had hcou sold to go
to St. Louis and Chicago. Fot this
stock, the leport elated, up to 13,50
per barrel f. o. b. shipping point was
paid.
in this market there is a good bust-
uesa to tiie jobuiug trade ana lor
some ot the Uner sorts up to 15 per
itanel hps been rui til on small lots.
l'be range on No, 1 stuck covering all
varieties has been from 13.50 to 15 per
barrel, with the aveiage price close
Hround 61.25 per barrel. There has
beeu a little easiness on far western
box tuiiile.-i, aud some stock sold in
small way down to II per box. Ilest
prices for box apples were around 13
per box. ihe results at the auotlon
salos on box apples this week have not
beeu so favorable, and a good many
lots lu Ulne Pearmains Bold at from
75a to $1.15 per box. Hpitzenberg ap
ples sold Ht from $2.40 to 83. 15 per
box ut tue rtiiireiiuy sale, but Jona
than apples were a little dragging at
from $1.40 to $2 per box. Northern
Spy sold ut f rom $1.05 to $1.55 per
box, and Haiti wins met a slow sale at
from fl.TI") to SI. 05 per box. The con
dition ot the fruit was reported fait.
A comparison of the market - cover
ing the prinoipal varieties with prlot-a
ruling at this tluio last year shows a
marked strength most noticeable in
the second grades this season. The
following table gives the range In New
York on tlio leading sorts:
I'M 1906
Oaldwius 82.00 to $1.25 SI. 50 to $2.25
King 2.00 to 4.00 2.00 to 3.00
Hen Davib 2.25 to 3.25 1.75 to 125
Oreeniug 2.00 to 3.75 1.05 to 2.50
Uravenst'n 2.00 to 3 50 1.75 to 3.00
Snow 2.00 to 4.00 2.50 to 3.00
20 Ounce 2.00 to 3.50 1.50 to 125
Common 1.00 to 1.75 1.60 to 100
It will bo noted that some of tbe
piiuolpul varieties show a marked in
crease in prices this season, and in
pite of the higher values noted there
is less uusold stock in tbe market to
day than was the case last year. In
this connection a prominent operator
said to a repoiter for the Uuide on
Thursday: "lbere Is still a good deal
of ordinary stook coming into tbe
market trom up-river sections, and
some ol tins stooK, condition coustd
eiod, is doiug remaikably well. There
Is no accumulation worthy ot tbe
name to hamper the dealers. It is
true a eluiro of the stock arriving this
week did not bring its value beoause
of the lliiRucial conditions and tbe
holiday intoival, but shippers are not
oomplaining. The market as a whole
is fully SI per barrel better than it
w s tciay a year ago, in addition to
which there is no four of a flood of
fruit couiiug forward. Up in tbe
RocbcBter seotion my advices state
that the upple harvett is piactloally
closed, ihe crop there has been so
small In uomparidou wi'b the usual
ield that the unsold balanoe in grow
ers HDii speculators' bands is being
safely housed. Most of the fruit in
that section has been contracted for.
but the few growers who have apples
bove the aveiage are holding their
fruit for a higher maiket.
"If, as it is reported, the United
States crop is only 21,000,000 barrels,
there is bound to be a higher market,
and t'o hold era ot truit late in tbe
winter will reap a considerable profit,
provided the stook is well stored,
there is Kuiiw to be a shortage of the

in my opinion, instead of lower val
