Dear Glacier : After a leeldenea of 59 yeais io my almost native state I find in rounding op affat a pieparato ry to leaving tbera comes feelicgs of regret that are bard to pat into words. On tbe 2tb of this month another biithday reminds me that la Septem ber, 1848. after a tedious jooruev ot six months across tbe plains, behind a miied team of milk cows and oxen, my father, with bis family of mother and elgbt rbildrea. pitebed tent on Pleasant II I II, Lana oonoty, 10 milrs southeast of Eugene, where timber and grass and wild gam war in abundance and where Ufa to us chil dren, in thinking It all over now, waa like a pleasant dream. Nine years later, in 1857, we i moved from Lana county to Polk, lo cating at Monmouth, named after Monmouth, Id., wbere father, witb ao unbroken family, took op tbe active work of pioneei life again. Sooo af terward tbe icy finger of death point ed mother to tbe great beyond and notwithstanding nearly 60 years rave passed ainoe that fateful boar that robbed me of earth's most preolous friend, vet tbe face of that dear moth er Is before me as I write these lloea, and there is a tugging at my heart string that beggars description, I fan oy 1 feel tbe gentle soothing too. -h of her withered band upon my bead aa she said ber last goodbye before cross ing tbe river and going out into tbe great unknown and untiied beyond. Tbeo tbe sweet dream of life faded and the sober side took its place. Thirty-seven years, tbe best part of a life time, when spent in Polk county, and even now as 1 write, 1 see tbe graves of father, mothei, side by side, two brothers and one sister, a wife and only daughter. And now In recounting life'a vic tories and its defeats I sometimes wonder whether after all tbe toil amid tbe st.dft s of life's battles, its pleas ures and its sad awakenings, whether or not its rewards of contentment outweigh its tioubles. But remember log "that the poet ot duty is tbe post ot honor," and witb tbe beacon star of hope beckoning as forwaid, we re new tbe battle and await aa calmly as possible the results of the veiled fu ture. But iu turning my face from all, the dear old state of Oregon, a state rich in history and all aglow witb the promise of a great future, there is one oomforting thought, to-wit, that a two hours' ride will bring as back in to the second addition of tbe garaeu of Edeu, the beautiful and almost prioe'lpsa vale of Hood River, watered and kept green by the life-giving wa ters of tbe mother of mountains, tbe jow crowned Hood. Thin again retaining 25 acres ut its ohoicest apple land in the veiy heait ot the best apple belt in tbe world. tbe thought that my borne beyond tbe great Columbia gorge will probably only be transient, and I go willingly, with the determination that I will at all times either with pen or tongue be teady to say a kind word for llood River, where 1 trust I leave behind me many friend i. After five years of strenuous work here 1 have always endeavored to work fur tbe upbuilding of our fair valley. Just bow far 1 bare succeed ed along that line tbe future will de termine. One thing la aure, however, that never a word spoken, a day's worK done or a line written In behalf of Hood River finds a lodgment ot re gret in my heart and 1 go feeling that 1 have discharged my duty to the best of my ability witb tbe light I bad and 1 ao witb another fact deeply im pressed upon me, tbat Hood River baa passed the experimental atage; that she atanda unrivaled and alone in a class ot her own. People are coming and going every d'iy to and from tbla famous health resort. Aside from ita health giving qualtities. the soenio effect here is obarming. Among the tall timbers tbxt pierce the starry heavens by night the large white building looms u'i aud witb ita smaller adjacent building and the many tents under eleotrio lights, presents a onarmini picture. Many prominent people from several states find rest and relief bere and they still oontlnue a to come. Ex oollent musical and literary programs aie rendered almost nightly in tbe parlor. One evening last week It was our pleasure to attend and paitiolpate Iu one of these pleasant social events, There are four verses. Verse 1. Ayer's Hair Vigor stops Tailing ! 11.11 VCI96 IJTbl n Vigor makes the hair grow. Verse 3. Ayer's Hair Vigor cures dandruff. Verse 4. Ayer's Hair Vigor makes the sc dp healthy, and keeps it so. It is a regular hair-food ; this is the real secret of its won derful success. The beet kind of a testimonial " Bold lor oror sixty yar." and I beg to bund you herewith pnem written by one of tbe gaet?. h gentleman from Astoria, which needs no comment from me. Here it is e .- titled, WIND RIVER FALLS. I As I wandered aloug 1 beard a avert song; I sat and I ILlAiiarl aoiliila Outbe aide ot tbe trail tbat ftltlij shovel and trade. Was made a full half a mile. j Tbe moslo continued ujr diminished ; at all, Aud ita wild cadence rose through tbe treea. I oontlnoed my journey along the , lone trail Until stung by tbe wild honey bees. I wandered along to tbe end of tbe trail Through tbe trees ao long, straight ana tail, 1111 at length on tbe brink ot tbe ohasm I atood And bad a magnificent view ot the tans.
