When we consider that the teachers of the oounty will hare a three days institute about tbe middle of October whioh they will be reauired la attani and that attendance at thia time is not required, thia large attendance speaks well tor tbe progressiveneee of the teaoheia of our oounty. The purpose of the institute la to give the teaohera an opportunity to get iu touch with tbe newest methods of presenting the various subjects of ine common school course and tbat the teaohera appreciate tbe work la proven by the way they take notes on everything presented. One ot the most interesting features of tbe institute is tbe presentation of primary work by Misa Smith with tbe actual class. The way sbe suoeeds in interesting tbe little folka and tbe methods she uses in getting results are especially helpful to the teacher in the oountry sohool who hea not the advantage ot the supervision given our city teaohera. This feature of the institute ia greatly enjoyed by all whether teaohera or not. Too much can not be said for tbe work of our own city superintendent, Prof. Grouse, and that ot 8o.pt. Strange, of The Dalles. Both are giv ing their time, and very suooeaefuliy, fur the betterment of tbe teaohing force aud through it of tbe schools of tbe oounty. The teachers, know ing that they are not paid for their work, greatly appieciate tbe disinter ested effort they are making aa well as toe excellence of treir instruction.
