KILLED HIS WIFE
COMMITTED SUICIDE
A sensation was created here Fri
day morning when it was learued that
Harry U. Llebe, a jeweler ot The
Dalles, bad ahot his wife at Portland
and also liiniHult. The murdered
woman in a duiixliter of Mm. Chita.
Pittnian, who lives near IIiihuiu, Wsnu
Both nnrties are well known here.
The trmiodv took iduoe at tbe borne
of Mrs. Stunlevaut, at Portlund, aud
was tbe culmination of a sepRrutiou
between Mr. and Mia. Liebo, on ac
count of the disnolute habits of the
murderer. Mrs. Llebe bad left bei
husband, but nureed to live witb biru
asain on account; ot their child, if he
would ston driukina for a year. l!e-
oeutly he bnd hoou brooding over bis
troubleH, niakliiK fieveial ell oris to aee
hla wife, who bud obtained a altua
t on in Portland, and the tragedy WHs
tbe result ot an interview witb her at
tbe Sturdevaut home.
Coroner t'inloy took charge of the
bodies soon alter the double crime
bad been committed. No Inquest wan
held, lhe parents of tbe dead muu
reside at Tbe Dallos, are old and fee
ble and the shook ot the tragedy was
ao great that it in feared they may not
survive. J. W. Bmlth, a friend of the
Liebe tamily, arrived from I lie Dalles
to take ohaige ot the uody ot uieue.
Tbe body of Mrs. Liebe wan taken
cbarue of by hur mothet. Jfotli bod In
were buried xido by aide In Portland.
Jiarry C. Liebe was 30 years old aud
his wife 20.
This crime adds another to tbe long
list if tragedies in the Liebe family.
Harry's uuolo, Theodore Liebe, waa
shot but not fatally wounded by a
nephew in Portlaud in the winter of
180;i. Another uncle, Alfred Liebe,
committed suiolde at The Dallea sev
eral years ago and Harry's brother,
Alfred, killed himeelf in San Frauds
oo in l'KJO. Cluirles Pittman, fathei
of Mrs. Liebe, was drowned in the
Willumetto about two yonis ago.
Harry Liebe wns iu Hood Hiver tbe
Monday before the tragedy, stopping
at tbe Mt. Hood hotel, and expected
to meet his wile heie. She was at that
time at the ho'ne ot her mother ueur
HuHiim, but bad gone through here
before Liebo got here. Jie appeared
very much disappointed ut not seeing
her here, and it is very likely that
the tragedy would have happened in
Hood Kiver had tbey met here.
(oud 1'rlces For Apples.
"An nlf year for apples" is the ia
port that comes trom fruit districts
ail around and according to Fruit
Commissioner Weber may be said to
be tbe condition iu the vicinity of
The Dalles which, although It does
not make a specialty ot applus yet bus
mauy tine apple orohanls.
At Houd Klver Mr. Weber said that
while the quality of tbe apple will
probably lie above the Hveiage, tbe
yield wili be but 50 to 00 per cent,
mid at Mooier the crop will be uiatoi
iaily under tho arerage. With a full
yield Hood Kiver should send out 1100
oars but it Is not believed there will
be more than 175 to 1!)0 cats or at
most 114,000 boxes. They are howevoi
expecting especially high prices as
will I in the case In all districts wheie
tbe boat varieties are grown.
From F. O. Itrnve, wboso orchard
in live miles up Mill deck and tiom
whom Davidson Bros, uf Hood Hiver
seoured 20 boxes of Spitzenbergs aud
Newtowus last year it is learned that
a representative of that oumpauy has
recently visited him aud la extremely
desirous of again purchasing bis
fruit. Last year Mr. lirace received
a box; this year they have made
him an olfer of f'J.llO tor every box
containing 12S apples or under aud a
good price for the remainder. There
is an advantage in disposing of them
to this company as the fruit is oil
bauds in a week's time, while, though
he might secure a higher price by
selling them iu smitllur lot there is
the disadvantage in handling them.
Mr. lirace expects to have something
like 1000 boxes this year.
J. C. Hostettler, who has 40 acres
on his Chenowitb Covo farm planted
to apples, will have at least 3000 box
e of the Spltzeu bergs and improved
lien Davh varieties aud may have
double that amount if the winds do
not play havoc with his orojitrd. It
waa feared that the hot weather ol
last week would damage the fruit but
such waa not tbe case. Tbe dry sea
son last year, he says, is responsible
for tbe decrease iu tbe yield this
year, as applea put forth their spura a
season in advance.
Mr. MoHeynolds, of Thompson's ad
ditlon and other growers are making
like reports concerning the crop this
year.
An advantage to tbe locality where
fruit li raised comes from the new
law which provides tbat no matter
where tbe fruit is shipped from tbe
name of the grower aud locality where
the fruit la grown must be placed on
the box in some form, aa well aa tbe
Bize of tbe pack. Tbe chipper may
place whatever else he may obooee on
the box, but these facta mubt appear.
Thus The Dallea will this year get
credit for applea raised in tbia locali
ty which baa not previously been tbe
ease. Chronicle.
Forest Kecelpts.
Ibe total reoeipta from business on
tbe national forests for the fiscal year
ending June 30 were $ 1,020, 017. Illi,
more than double tbe receipts for tbe
preceding year, aud the sum which
goes to tbe states aud territories by
law, to swell tbe county school and
road funda where national forests aie
located 10 per cent of tbe total is
also more than doubled, reaching
1152,901. 7U.
There ia food for thought in the
faot tbat, except for Arizona, Cali
fornia and Utah tbe states which de
rive tbe greatest benefit from tbe re
turns of forest management are Colo
rado, Idaho, Montnaa, Oregon, Wash
ington and Wyoming, tbe six states
in which congress last winter forbade
tbe addition uf new national forests
except by its own act. As compared
witb tbe figures tor last year, Mon
tana's share, $20 655.42, is tbia year
three times larger; Idaho's $10,055.42
almost three times; Oregon s fl,
OHO. 80, almost twice; Wyoming's (10,
000.80, almost two aud a half times.
SHORTEST SALMON
PACK IN HISTORY
"The Salmon pack of 1907 on Puget
Sound, Alaeka, the Columbia river,
in my opinion will be tbe shortest in
tbe history of the industry," said E.
11. Dem, in tbe Buliiugham Reveille.
Salmon are soaroe. Canuerymeu of
IJolllngbam, Puget Sound. Alaska aud
tbe Columbia river, are disappointed,
and there ia no sign of the latter part
of the season being any better. Indi
cations are now, that tbe run of sock
eyes is at IU zenitb, although it is ad
mitted by experienced fishermen that
the reverse may be tbe case before tbe
season aotualiy closes.
Few sookeyes are reaching the traps
but local fishermen agree tbat there U
yet ample Urn for tbe fish to ariive
in such quantities as to swamp the
canneries, - although none of the
manager of the Hound canneries an
ticipate such good fortune.
About 20,000 llab were received at
tbe Paoido Amerion Fisheries cannery
last night, one-half ot which were
sockeyes and tho :ther halt humpback
salmon. OUioera of tbe Pacific Amer
oau Fisheries say tbat statistics at
hand to date from Alaska, Columbia
river aud Puget Hound show a de
mease of 50 per cent in the pack as
oompared with last year, which was
an average year in the salmon indus
try. Last year the Pact Ho American
Fisheries cannery packed a total of
75,000 cases of salmon und if the pres
ent conditions are a criterion 30,000
oases will be considered good.
It is oonce led by li-drerinen that the
Ush are headed for tbe Fraser river,
but are taking a new route. The con
ditions of tho tides and winds may
swerve the schools ot fish iu a differ
ent direction aud cause them to miss
the traps, but the idea advanced that
tbe Ush are seeking new spawning
grounds is sonuted. It is said to be
only a question of man's ability to
learn where to place the traps iu tbe
most advantageous manner.
Eczema.
For the good of those suffering with
eczema or other such trouble, I wish to
say, my wife had something of that kind
and after using the doctors' remedies
for some time concluded to try Cham
berlain's Salve, and it proved to be bet
ter than anything she hod tried. For
sale bv Kerr & Cuss.
(Jaine Wardens Patrolling liiver.
Friday Frank C. l!rown, chief dep
uty fish warden and V. A. Mack aud
Ole J. Setteu, deputy Ush and game
wardens, stopped at Hood Kiver with
their patrol boat, and reported mak
ing several catches of nets, besides
making aresta for violation of the Ush
laws. They also made complaint
against one of the lumber companies
fur allowing sawdust to be run iu the
river. Mr. lirowu said tbat they
nild be very active from now on
along the river, and would cause .he
arrest of en ry oue caught violating
the law, regardless of who the party
was. They intend to make an inspec
tion ot Hood Kiver very soon, and it
will be well tor every one who is not
complying with the fish law in every
respect to be ready for the inspection
of the offlolals.

HOOD RIVER APPLES
FOR VLADIVOSTOK
The following from tbe Oregonlan
shows tbe growing favor of Hood Hir
er applea among tbe buyers of choice
fruit tor export:
D. S. Yagdjoglou. of the commis
sion house of Yagdjoulon Bros , Vlad
ivostok, Siberia, wbo virtually has
made Portlaud his home since his ar
rival in tbe United Staeta a little
more than a year ago, bas already
oontraoted for considerable portion of
tbe Oregon apples be will ship to tba
far oft KusBlan port In tbe Orient
during the next few months. He has
closed a deal for about 3000 boxes of
early Hood Kiver apples. Ibey rep
resent tbe output of oue orchard and
wen contracted for at 91.20 a box. as
picked from tbe trees.
llocause of tbe long distanoe they
must be shipped Mr. Vagdioulou In
sists on tnrnisbing his own kind of
boxes and packing material, this ad
ding about 50 cents to tbe oost ot each
box. The later applea will bring a
much higher price, and though tome
varieties have already been contract
ed tor at fancy figures, Mr. Yagdjou
lou refuses to disclose at this time,
tne price ne is paying.
During the present seasou he ex
pects to contract for about 15,000. and
possibly 20,000 boxes of Hood River
apples, all to be shipped to Vladivos
tok. He will ship a much larger
amount of tbe fruit this year than
last, when he bought about 11 car
loads or something like 5000 boxes.
This year's baying will aggregate
more than $20,000 at a conservative
estimate.
Mr. Yagdyoulou deolsres 'that the
experiences of bis firm has disclosed
the faot tbat Russia will buy very few
apples from tbe Japanese growers in
tbe future, tbougb tbey have patro
nized them steadily In tbe past. This
is due to number ot causes. Ia tbe
first place the Japanese apples will
not keep, they have little or no aro
ma, and more important still, little
or no taste, which Id tba epicurean
code of a Kmsian is unpardonable.
Tbe Hood Kiver varieties which
Bnd ready demand in the Siberian
market, and which stand tbe long
shipment without much damage, are
the winesaps. the Yellow mewtowns.
the lien Davis, the Ortley and Hyde's
King, tbe last named variety keeping
better than any of tbe others.
"1 already have closed deal for
about 3000 boxes ot Hood River ap
pise," said Mr. Yagdyoulou, yester
day, "and will puroase from 15, 0(H) to
2U,uuu boxes all tcld before tbe season
Is over. 1 bave found that it pays
to get only tbe very best grades and
1 expect to pay fanoy prices for all 1
buy. In faot, 1 intend to pay more
than tbe market price for tbe very
best apples simply to assure myself
ttrnt 1 get Urst quality fruit.
"This year 1 shall also ship to
Vladivostok about live carloads of
Calilornla oranges, about 15,000 ot
20,000 boxes of Italian oranges, whiob
are much cheaper than the California
varieties, and about 25,000 boxes ot
Itallau lemons. 1 will not bay any
California lemons. They are too ex
pensive. "This year we shall Increase heavi
ly our orders ot dried and oanned
fruits, but we shall not experiment
further with watermelons. Last year
1 tried to ship a large consignment of
melons to Siterla, but we lost a large
sum of money, which we must charge
to experleuce. We found tbat tbe on
ly way to keep watermelons is to paok
tbem so that they can get the benefit
of tbe motion of tbe ship at sea.
Leave a watermelon in one position
for 10 or 15 days and tbe juice will
settle to the bottom allowing the up
per portion to dry np and the lower
to become soggy, thus spoiling the
euitre melon. It they could be turned
every two or three days it wonld not
only preservo the melon but add tc
its flavor.
"We are always taking big chances
in shipping fruit from this oouutry
tbe 7000 miles to Vladivostok. For
instance, we route the Hood River
apples from Ibe orchards to Portland,
from Portland to Seattle, from Seattle
to Vanoouver, from Vancouver to Ja
pan aud from Japanese porta to Vlad
ivostok. Apples have to be packed
with marvelous care to stand all tbat
handling. We also ship some direct
from here, some from San Fianolsoo,
some from Seattle in addition to wbat
is sent from Vanoouver.
Yagdyoulou liroa. have the largest
commission house in Vladivostok and
act as jobbers tor the retail trade
tbioughout the whole Siberian terri
tory. Some ot tbe Hood River apples
bought here will be shipped 2000 or
3000 miles Inland after tbey have trav
eled the 7000-mile journey to tba
Oriental port.
