Six HOOD RIVER QLACIEE THURSAY AUGUST 15. 1907 Irrigation projects ancient history In America irriRhtion was practioed thousands ot year uao by the pre-bia- tor'c tnwn-builJiiiu Pueblo ludians ia New Mexico a nil Arizona. Tbe de aeendanta ot tLiPxe Indiana btill culti vate lands which wore tilled by initia tion when the treasure Becking Span iards came np from the soutn, and even now practice mitij ot the cus toms ot their ancestors. Hieh alons the steep cliffs in the canons of the southwest btill cling the rulua of the termer homes of the ex tlnct race of clilt dwellers, and in the broad valleys below can be aoen today the rains of their atone dams and ir rigation canals-all that is left to toll the story ct Aaiorica a nr agricui turlata. Ibe Orat systematic application of inigation to ke made by the whites in the United Stntes was inaugurated by the Mormons on the tihoref of the Great Salt lake In l&W. me Mormons found L'tab anything but the prom ised land for which they had hoped. From necessity they resorted to Iriga tion and aonn made the barren site of Bait Lake City one of the most pros perous communities in the west. A few years later the placet miners of California atilized their placer wash ing streams for irrigation purposes and laised large crops ot vegetables and grain. However, irrigation did not make any extensive headway until after the civil wr and dining the early '70s, when the great tide of immigration turned toward the went. In 1870 only about 20,000 acres ot land weie culti vate I by Irrigation In the United States. In the next ten yeur the number was increased to 1,000,000 acres. During the years 1880-90 irrigation experieuced a great boom, and the number of acres Increased to nearly 4,000,000. In 1902, the last census, the aorenae was 9,031, .720, and each month sees thousands of acres added until the total is nearly ir,000,000 acres today. In tho modem hiatory of irrigation the great desert land engineering feats have been accomplished which are the wonder of the world. To acoomplish these fonts mountains have been tun nelod, streams oairied hundreds of miles out of the natural courses, lakes have been tapped, whole rivers di verted and huge storage reservoirs constructed. Irrigation has prowu with such leaps and bounds thut natural gravity alone cannot be depended upon to supply the water where needed, and electricity is now being used to drive tho mammoth oentrifugal pumps lain ing l he watei to unusual heights. Among the groat lrrlgtainn engi neering fonts ot this country la the wouriert ul Strawberry Valley pioject at Vernal, Utah, now under way, where a storage rRsorrnh will be buiU to hold five billlou gallons of water, and a tunnel three and ono-half miles long is boiug cut thiough a mountain. 'Ibe work ia being dona by electri cally drlveu toolw, and when coin Jet ed the water will bo used to generate electricity for lighting and power pul pites, and then for irrigation. The entire electrical equipment for this plant was furuishod by the lieueral Kleotrio company. Ibe WilliHton, N. D., project and the liuford-I unit on project in the same atute are operated ontiiely by electricity. The current la generated by Curtis steam purlio geueiatois and la lined to drive the large motors con nected wtb tho centrifugal pumps. Another system baa been Installed at (Jarden City, Kansas, and still an other at Bait Lako, Arizona. At the last named place the vortical shaft electric generators ore direct connect ed to large water wheols for generat ing the current. - Fiom the old hand wheel of pre blstorio man to the modern motor driven oentrifugal is a long ory, but it fully demonstrates the progress of powerand complicated machinery from the stnit to tho present. Who knows what the future will be? I'each t'roHHi'il with Apricot. One of the uswost aud bout fruits that has been gralted la what the own er, A. M. Cale, of Fruitvale district, calls a peach apricot, says the Yakima ltepuuliu. The tree is only three years old and has bourne tor two years. The truit is ot the most luol ous kind with a perfectly smooth skin, having the color ot both a poach and an apiioot. The fruit is always large and ripe In proper season about tho lhet of July. Mr. Cale did not pay any attention to the tree wheu it was small and came very near cutting it down, but after It yielded Its Mrst fiutt he realized the value and immediately bad it copyrighted. Tbia gives him complete control ot that kind of fruit and no one can raise tho same kind of fruit unless t hoy buy tho trees ot him. He will have 3000 trees on the market this fall, lie has been nllorod IdOO for the one treo and the copyright but refuses to take it, with the idea that he can got more by selling the bud to be grafted. There are 2G:l,(V!i) registered auto mobllists in the United States, as ap pears by the otllcial legiHtrntiou in each of the 40 states up to June 15. New York leads the list with 41,331), aud New Jersey, one ot the smallest states, comes next place with 21,081, and is expected to take second before the eud of tho year. Delawaie with 552, ia the ainallest number in any state. These figures do not represent the total number, as a garage or sale room having 20 to &u automobiles, may have only two or three registered cards. It is only about 10 years siuoe an automobile was a cuiioslty in many places, but it is safe to say that today over 300,000 are being driven through the streets of the cities and towns of the country. Aa all eld prospectors will tell the three months ot almost con tineas fan light each summer In the Northland baa an odd effect on most newcomers. Aa a matter ot tact a man accustomed to seven hours sleep each night, finds upon going to Alaska that be cannot etsily adjust himself to the alteied conditions. Most people gev sleepy when the dark comes, and do '.ot think ol Bleeping in daylight. As a resuP. men go for day alter day when first in the north with little inclina tion to sleep. A man baa to train himself in Alaska and Yukon to go to bed with the sun shining bigb in the tky. Those who need darkness in or der to slunibei comfortably have to pin blanket over the windowa and go to great deal ot extra trouble to pro dace it. It is aaid in the early days that the chickens that were first brought to the north in the summertime went crazy for want of rest. They waited and waited for the sun to set in ordor to know when to go to roost, and as it continued to shine, the fowls went without sleep until they were exhaust ed. This story is bardly verified but it ' true that the continuous daylight has a very odd effect on men and ani mals alike, and it takes a few weeks to get accustomed to it. M ark Your "Rnsh" Letters. Butler was a guest of friends In Brooklyn. During his visit be noted the rule of the street railway com panies compelling conductors to regis ter fares as soon as passengers entered tbe cars and before tbe fares wero ac tually collected. Two or three year, afterward be represented tbe plaintiff la a damage suit for $15,000 In which a Brooklyn street railway company wo tho defendant The principal -witness for tho company was the conductor of tie car on which the accident occur red, and his testimony was so strong as to make thing look bad for Butler's client. But Butler recalled the unusual rule ho had remarked years before, and on cross examination be said: "Your company requires you to ring up fare a soon as passengers enter the car, doesn't It?" "Yes." "Supposo a passenger boards your car and then finds he 1 on tbe wrong line. Do 7011 state that fact to your superiors, and Co they make allowance on your return for that fare?" "No. I lose the nickel." "Do yon mean to say the company won't take your word for 5 cents?" "No, they won't." "Yet," snld the shrewd veteran, turn ing to tho Jury, "tbe company ask you to take this conductor's word for $15,' 000." Butler's client received a verdict- Brooklyn Eagle. The Limit of Life.
