At the rik cf having great bodily harm I u dieted upon our person by a long mfferlng public we veotara to ask, "It it hot enough for yooT" The total clip of Oregon t bis year Ik estimated at 20,000,000 pounds. Last year tbe sheep produced 18,000, 000 pounds. Tbe value of tbe 19U" clip ia approximately :t.80O,000. At a wealth-producer it exceeded tbai ol tbe previous yeat by about $."iC0,000. By tbe provisions of tbe will of tbe late Jobn H. Stetson, tbe niulti mil lionaire, philanthropist and euemy of "race auioide," every obild torn to bis aoui will Inherit 0,000. Station left 17,000,000 and atated iu bia will tbat if bia sols married their income would be doubled and eacb cbild would be given a quarter of million dollara. Tbe scarcity of business office rooma in Hood Klver la being felt by new comers looking for business locations. In fact business boatlous of all kinds ate bard to get, and more buildings are needed. Tbe new block wbicb will be erected by J. E. Niobloa will pro vide both jiouud .floor room f oi bis own business and one small etore be sides, and oflloe rooma on tbe second floor, but still mote are needed. More business blocks are needed, and will pay good interest on tbe investment. Tbe question of an eleotilo railway through Hood Xiiver valley li again being agitated, and it Is only a ques tion of a very abort time before some corporation takes up the matter and builds tbe road. It if believed it will pay from tbe start. While suth a pio jeot will undoubtedly be a money maker for the company who is the first to see tbe possibilities and puts it lu, it will also be a great factor iu the more rapid development of the valley, and tend to raise valuea espec ially in the more d'staut parts of the valley. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty against Haywood at Boise, af ter one of the longest drawn out and bitterly contented trials in the histo ry of tbe country. Those who have read the evidence are surprised at the verdict. While the principal evidence was upon the testimony of the self convicted murderer, Urobard, tbe jury did not give weight enough to that testimony to decide Haywood"! guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Vet the terrible bocusbMou of Oiobard against Ihe "Inner circle" reinaiu unexplained. Tbe eyes of the publio are upon them, aud they w)ll be marked men for life. As will be noted in another column, there is a movement on foot to pur chase ten acres of ground and eieot ami maintain an assembly bull, park and swimming pool for tbo free use of the publio, and dedicated to and con trolled by tbe grange sooletiea. It will not be a striotly looal affair, but be for the benefit of the entire valley, under proper leatrictions, where they can assemble for publio meetings, hold picnics, wheie the youngsters can enjoy bathing with safety, and be made a wholesome popular resort. The enterprise is aoummenduble ouo, aud the promoteis are entitled to great credit for their elforts. Save the Bcrrr Hughes. Hundreds of people are now going into the mountains to pick huckle berries. Tbe crop this season is ex delimit, in fuot, it Is tbe first crop t'int has esoapod the frost for a num ber of years aud the berries are now ripening iu largo quantities ou the mountains. Bo ninny people doepuil the berry patohns by breaking the bushes that a word of appeal to save tbe bushes does not seem out of plane. It iulns next yoar's crop to break off tbe bearing Lushes aud is an act of luexounalile vandalism. Save tbe busbes for next year. This is uot the last year. If everybody broke bushes aud sat iu tbe shade aud picked tbe beiries oil, how long would it be until tbe plen aut enjoyment of picking huckleber ries woud lie destroyed? Savo tho bushos. Don't vandalize the berry patches. Hast Oregon ian. Robt. ltand Visits Seattle. Ilolit. Hand returned Saturday from a mouth's visit to Seattle, where he visited his son, 1). E. Mr. Hand had a very pleasant trip, and was amazed at the lengths the teal estate boomeis Hre going to sell property. He Bays that all the hills for miles around the city have been platted into city lots, mid real estate signs adorn every thing, movable or immovable, where they con be located. He even saw a sign painted on a blanket, whiuh cov ered a cow pastured out In tbe coun try, which stated tbat so and so had acreage aud city lots for salo. Mr. ltand says that tbe ruHb of people lu the streets is so great tbat it is dan gerous to cross the street iu Seattle, while one can lay down iu the streets of Tacoma foi hours, without danger, aud "watch Tacoma grow." Death of Delia Lulu Jackson. GRANGE HALL AND PICNIC GROUNDS Hood River Granger! are to have a oountry borne dedicated to tbeir own a tie. This will include a tract of ground in a central location, an as sembly ball capable of holding 000 people, park grounds wblob will ac commodate large piCDlo parties, and a tine swimming pool for tbe children. Tbis commendable enterprise is tbe result of severs! months' aniet woik on tbe part of Le Morse, wbo finally called in tbe counsel of several of tbe Grangers, wbo at onoe fell in with the Idea, and an option was secured on a piece of ground tbat lies on tbe bor det of tbe Frank-ton and Barrett dis tricts. At a meeting of East Barrett Grange Friday evening, tbe matter was discussed and met witb almost unanimous approval, tbe following oommittee being appointed to investi gate tbe matter aud report, tbe two latter being mem bets of tbe Frsnton Grange: Lee Morse. W. N. Staotter, A. O. Staten and M. if. Noble. At a meeting held Tuesday evening at Last Barrett, the following perma nent oommittee of arrangements was sppolnted : Iee Morse, B. li. Bob bins and II. C. Batebam. A oommit tee will be appointed from Fraokton Grange Friday evening to work witb tbe Last Barrett commtitee. A campaign will be started Satur day to do active work. While aboot tfJOUO Is already pledged to the enter piise, more money will be needed, and subscriptions will not be limited to Grange members, t.s It will be a publio euterpiise, aud I be users of tbe grounds not restricted to Grsnge purposse, but ttue bud will be open to all publia assembles, devoted to publio benellt, aud tbe park grounds will also be devoted to tbe good ol tbe community. Tbe first work will be done at once on tbe swimming pool. There Is s natural lake or basin on tbe plaoe, wbicb will be cleaned out. gravelfd, and fresh water turned lu troin tlie irrigating dtlch, so tbat it will be grounds will tben be nxed up tor per manent picnic grounds, and tbe as sembly ball built as soon as possible. It Is proposed to dedicate tbe ball for the use of Grange purposes, not re stilcted to any particular lodge, and will be open for tbe benefit of all worthy popular assembles. There will also re a clause in tne meed, inai should the Grange lodges fail to main tain tbe property or disband, the land will revert to the publio sobooi dsitrict, so tbat the children and the publio mty have tbe bene tit of a free park and assembly place.
