Unas, of San Francisco, representing the 11 tm of E. J. Lyons & Kaas, has been iu Salem overseeing tbe pieparation of 000 bairels ot Ore gon Koyal Anne cherries for juipment to San FranoiBCO, wberethey iwill be converted into maraschino. It is in deed a tribute to tbe Oregon -Koyal Anne cheny that it is suitable to meet the exacting requirements ot that delicate and delicious spirit. Ibe cherry must be perfect, without blem ishes, of the proper grade and size and entirely fuultiess. About OUU barrels ot thee-e cherries are being put up at the Salem Mutual Canning plant in this city for ship ment to California. Just what pro cess the cbeiry undergoes after it reaches tho plant and how it is con verted into the maraschino product is a secret just as the making of con densed milk is a secret. The cherries are pitted and careful ly colored, arouiutized, sweetened and prepared to be dropped into the glass of exlhilaratiug cocktail, or the dis tiled spirit from the cherry is mixed into fancy beverages. fulfill luiiiit'i j at it vim. With the opening of the Mutual Canning company's plant on 12tb street recently the busiest hive of industry iu the city, or perhaps in Marion couuty, went into full opera tion, says the Salem Statesman. Tbe great building,' oonupying an acre ot floor space, was tilted almost to tbe doors with girla ami strawber ries, while a large foroe of men, per haps 25 in number, unloading wagons of fruit as it arrived from the farms, nailed lids ou boxes, carried (tuit to the hands stemming and grading ber ries, and kept tbe ponderous canning machinery iu full blast in order that the groat Saturday supply of berries should be canned before tbe Sunday vacation, for no berry is held over a day or a night if possible. There are about 150 girls and women doing the stemming and grading of tbe fruit, for every berry is carefully placed with others ot tbe same size and oonditiouj of freshness, and re quires a vast deal of work before it appears as canned fru t. After it is stemmed aud graded the fruit is packed iu cans wheie tbe cooking takes place, followed by tbe sealing process, which is done by heat and pressure from tbe oil aud air heated machinery of the next depart ment. This part of tbe work is done by men who wear thick gloves and oil cloth apionB, for tbe truit is kept at a high temperature aud every precau tion is taken to prevent accidental scalding. From 8000 to 10,000 quart cans of fruit ia the average daily output when a full working force is present and the fruit arrives promptly from the farm. Pastor Grunted Vacation. The official board of the Hood Klv er Methodist Episcopal church has granted the pastor, Uev. W. C. Ev ans, a six weeks vacation. Kev. Ev ans has been a very busy pastor dur ing bis pastorate in tbe Hood River church. Hi has been faithful in sea son aud out of season, and has earned the vacation which bis official board has granted. The Kev. geutleman will improve tbe time by taking a trip back to his former borne in Missouri. Kev. Evans was presideing elder In his home conference aud served sevei al of the most piominent appoint ments iu that country. He will also visit in Arkansas, Oklahoma and In dian Tenitory before his return to the coast. Minnosolo to Have Fruit Farm. Minnesota is to have an experiment al fruit tarm, where work similar to that conducted in California by Luth er llurbauk may be carried on. The last legislature provided an appropri ation of $10,000 to buy the land, with a suitable maintenance fund, and those interested are looknig for a place where tbe farm may be located. Two or three sites have been looked at, for a place were the farms may be located, but none has yet been se lected. Ibe laud, which is to consist of a quarter section, is to be purchased by tbe board of regents ot tbe state uni versity, with the approoval of the horti cultural society. It will have to be lo dated at some place not far from St. Paul, so that it may be accessible- for supervision. Shade for Berry Pickers, A Pennsylvania strawbeny grower has mnde a movable screen under which he can pick bis strawberries in the hottest days. Tbe screen is sup ported ou tour uprights, and these are fastened to a frame mounted on four wheels. Above the wheels Is an arrangement for holding many boxes of strawberries, so tbe picker will not have to leave his shade wiien he has Stashed picking his box. The invent or finds this arrangement a great help when the sun is so hot that it would drive tbe pickers out ot the Held. It is of great importance in the straw berry business to have the berries picked at tbe time they are just right to go to market. Was Poor in Health for Years. Ira W.
