DABNEY'S STORE
IS BURGLARIZED
O. P. Dabuey's furniture and seo
ond bant storo wan burglarized hut
Sunday evening. Tbe culprits gained
admission through one of the large
back windows by nrying ott the wood
en shutter and breaking the Klaus.
They were evidently professional
crooks. Thrf instrument used for
prying the wcodeu shutter ott was a
sharp piece of a steel spring about VI
iuohes in length and one inob in
width and sharpened on one end. It
Is evidout that this instrument bad
been used on previous oooasiona as it
was praotioally polished on the sharp
end. They also sought a seoluded
spot In which to do their work. The
window, through which they gained
admission, was sheltered by a large
apple tree. Hie other two windows
at the rear of the store could have
beou enteied with nitioh less dittloul-
tv. because the wooden shutters
which protected thotu were fastened
on the outside, with u staple bar,
while the one through which they
went was fastened on the inside of
the buildiug.
The amount of their reward con
sisted of eiuht or ten watches, two re
volvers and three or four razors. It
is evident Unit they were (riuhteued
from the scene of their operations be
fore they bad finished their job, be
oause there weie many other like ar
tides that they could have taken
without extra effort.
Mr. Dabuey stated that be saw two
men standinu on the sidewalk near
the store lute in the evening, and be
watched them tot a time. It seemed
to him that one ot tbe men was
drunk and they wore trying to light
a pipe or cigar. However, he bad no
suspicion that they were intending to
burglarize the stoie.
Mrs. Dabney stated that about
10 :30 o'clock p.m. she saw two men
standing near the residence, and
lieaid one of them say, "Weil, we
have to have it." i'bese circum
stances, however, created no suspi
cion witb her, but viewed in the
light of what tauspired, she Is satis
fied that these men are the guilty
parties.
Mrs. Simonsou, whose residence is
near by, 'slated that she heard a glass
break about 2 o'clock Monday morn
ing and from ber window saw a man
leaving from the rear of the store and
going In a northerly direction. His
pal was probably on guard near the
.')abney residence whore they made
their entrance to tbe tear ot the
tore.
Marshal danger was immediately
notified tbe following morning, when
the robbery was first discovered, and
bas wired the authorities in Tbe
Dalles and Portland to be on the look
out for the guilty parties.
