Six HOOD RIVER GLACIER THURSDAY, JUNE 27, 1907 V t' , ! , 1 V t i . i i BUSTER AND TIGE CREATE SENSATION lb orlinul buster lirown and big famous do iitfo arwea id iioou un ci last I'buMday forenoou. Ai noon aa be alighted from tbe tiain be be came the object of cariosity and Borutiuy to tbe great crowd Uat sur rounded biu. Immediately alter getting Tige from tbe baRgsge car and leleasing him from ttie cage, be went to the Mt. Hood hotel and registered as "liugtei brown, of tbe Blown Shoe Co.' Promptly at 3:15 p. m. buster and 'i'ige were out on parade accompanied by Ueo. Xbompuon and 'Xboa. Hill, tbe latter acting ua bugler, announc ing tbe advent of the visitors aa tbey Iased along tbe main thoroughfares of tbe city. Tbe crowd soon gathered at tbe grand stand iu front of tbe Paris Fair awaiting tbe final demonstrations of the two notables. At 4 o'oolok buster mounted tbe stand accompanied by bis chum 'i'ige, who was seated in a chair at bis lett, wearing litle red cap and a pair of spectacles, looking wine. Tbe do? Tige, be said was not the oiiginal animal with wbicb be travel ed nine years, but one be bad bad in training but two months. Tbe orig inal Tige, buster explained, oould shake bauds when Introduced, smoke a pipe, wore buster brown shoes, and was regarded as a clever animal, bat fell ill about two mouths ago, when tbe present Tige was secured. Ibis promises to be a woitby suooeasor, for be wean spectacles very demurely and has bis cap adjusted jauntily on the back ot bis bead, in piivate life, that is wbon not performing on tbe street, Tige is just a good doggy kind of a dog, that trots alter bis little master and whines real dog whines when bis master places biui in bis private kennel for transportation to tbe next town. Ibis kennel is built like a bouse, and furnished witb all tbe comforts of borne. There is a buffet where provisions are carried, and a non collapsable drinking cap, which oannot be overturned by tbe jar of traveling and wbicb enables him to have a drink whenever be likes. While buster's mission was to ad vertise tbe well known "buster brown" shoe, bis reception was greatly enjoyed. Although buster is 43 years ot age, his face has a veiy boyish appearance, augmented by a wealth of flaxen hair worn in tbe buster styli over his brow, and about bis neck. He is 41 inehs in height, which is about ub tall as a six-year-old boy, and weighs, 50 pounds. To be sure bis funny little face bad been somewhat brightened by an ap plication of carmine bubd "rogue de theatre," and his ilaxen curls looked sunploioii'-ly as if they were not unac quainted witb "peroxide of hydro gen," but bis small vauitios were for given, when he bud fairly entered tbe story be had to tell. His home is at ilornellsvillo, Mo., and be informed the crowd that be bad left a dear little wife there, hb "cute as himself." The story of bis courtship was real romautio and told of deeds of heroism worthy of the career of knights and kings. His courtship lasted through a period of four years and when tbe cruel ill hour arrived to Interoeed witb the prospective tatbor-in-law for the band of the biide be stayed In the town four days before be oould muster up siililoleut courage to ask the "old man." After a thorough presentation of the brown Shoe Co. 's shoes in gener al, and the limtor brown blue Rib bon shoes iu particular, he catechised tbe obildren in a most unique man ner. in answer to the questions pro pouuded by, buster "What kind of shoes are you going to buy next time, and where are you going to get them?" Tbe universal answer by the l!f0 children was "Hunter brown blue bilibon shoes, at the Paris Fair." These questions ami answeir were re peated several times, until the chil dren bad become thoroughly indoc trinated witb the spirit ot the hour. At ttio conclusion of his speech be distributed 1000 celluloid souvenirs, containing the picture ot himself and Tigo, by scattering thorn broadcast through the vast crowd. Tbe memen toes were as engerly sought by the old as by the young. Old men and wom en scrambled about picking up the souvenirs. Hard Scrap in The Dalles. The recent school election held in The Dalles was perhaps the most bit ter contest ever waged in that city over school tnatteis. In speaking of the matter t tie Ubroniale states: Last year's school election was sup posed to be a warm one, and it oer taiuly was, but, to speak eloquently, ttiRt or yesterday bae 'em all skinned. Excitement ran blgb ou both occa sions, all who bad the interest of tbe schools at beait taking an active part and on both occasions tbe women fig ured prominently, but the contest was not so one-sided in 11H16 as this year, there being but eight votes ditfereuoe last year, when 'MS votes were oast and 1;S this, witb til cast, tnree being biankB. For some weeks the contest has been ou, starling with the announce merit by John Uavin tbit he was a caudldate for school director "on an anti-Whitney pluttorRi in opposition to K. O. McCoy, who later declared that bo was pledged for or against no particular Individual or individuals, but the interests of the district. The Chroniclo opened Its columns to both side, deeming it due to the people, as well as individuals, that tbe situa tion be thoroughly placed befoiethem and disoussed. its last issue before election came out Saturday, and Hun day morning circulais were distiibut ed about the town attacking Mr. (lav iu personally aud Monday the teach era by the supporters of Mr. Whltnev. The polls opened at the Condon building at 2 o'clock and from that hour until they closed at 0 'clock tbe rlerks and judges were kept busy, in tnrest waxed so waim that it is said iruch money cbaugod.bauds between confident ones. About tbe midle of the afternoon Mr. Gavin's election was conceded and tbe result of the count, annonno ea about 7 o'clock, proved the oor rectness of the conjecture, the vote being 308 for Mr. Unviu aud 150 for Mr. MoCoy. Will Buy Fruit Direct. The new law in Washington regulst Ing commission houses dealing in fruit aud farm products has gone into effect, and as a lesult or its operation several of tbe bouses on western av cnue at (Seattle will cease to do bus! ne on a commission IjihIb, but will buy land sell direct, paying cash to tbe producers, bonding houses have made a rule that bouses not having mernbantile rating ot ft!0,oou must pu up 13000 in collateral, which some of them say tbey will be unable to do, Tbey state it is an unjust discrlmin ation in favor of the larger houses which have mercantile ratings. Full Fledged Chauffeur. U. J. Uessling is now a full fledged autoist. ilia bow automobile arrived tbe first ot last week, and as soon as was unloaded it was piaced into nommission. Tbe trial trip proved that the machine was competent to climb any bill iu Hood Kiver. Mr. Uessling is bis own chauffeur and if one may judge by tbe pose ot tbe gen tleman as be sits in bis seat, with both hands upon tbe steering appara- us, peering through bis colored gog gles, and witb an occasional root-a- toot toot of tbe auto born, one would oonclude that be was a member of tbe professional ranks. He promises to perform some very creditable stunts, providing tbe city council does not pass an orrdinanoe placing tbe city speed rate below two miles an bour. A number of tbe houses declaie tbat tbey will be unable to observe that section of tbe law providiing for tbe retain of aocount to tbe snipper lor product sent to market within 48 hours from .he time or receipt uy ine commission man, and for return, on request :lo writing, of name and ad dress of purchaser ot each part ot the shipment, wlta price received from each. Tbree booses, H. E. Emerson 4 Co., A. D. blowers & Co. and F. P. Taylor 4 Co. refusing to take out li censes, have sent oat circulars to tbelr customers in the country an nounoing their retirement from com mission selling and piopose to do on ly a wholesale business, and instruct ng them to cease sending shipments io be bandied on tbe old basis. Inspectors are Vigilant. The Idaho fruit inspection law is being enforced in most vigorous manner by tbe efficient deputies out over tbe state, as reports ot tbe whole sale destruction of infected fruit trees would indicate. (Stale Fruit Inspector llitt repoits tbat William buckley, deputy inspect. or for district No. V, Kootenai, bon- ner and part of Sbcsbone counties, has recently bad 7000 fruit trees dug op and burned, because of theirjbeing so infected witb insect pests as to be serious menace to tbe fruit Indus try. And there was no real kick at this wholesale destruction, tbe own ers believing that the case demanded that k'nd of treatment. These trees bad been already set out. ile reports considerable trouble witb nursery men, who persist in sending iu tiees without having them properly (unit gated. Two cars were lit Id up con taluing 17,000 such trees, and were fumigated at the cost of the sbippeis witb hydrocyanic eus.
