THE HOOD RIVER GLACIER, THURSDAY. JUNE 27, 1907 Three NO DANGER OF OVERPRODUCTION The problem of the overproduction ot apples iu the Hood Hirer Taller hag given many prospective growers a very convenient subject for street de bate, ludeed, many who are now in the business of growing commercial apples, have otteo debated the advisa bility of continuing iu the industry in view of the fact that every one who comes to the valley begiua at once the growing of an orchaid ident ical with us. The fai t in that if every available acre of Hood liiver soil was planted to au apple orchard, and that apple orchard was in full bearing, it would not eltect the epple market of the world to any great exte.t. The demand tor a tlnst class apple is far in excess of the supply, and in view of the fact that the ten itory capable of produoing such tine truit as is grown in Hood Kiver is very limited, aigoes that the deiuaud will ever remain in advance of the supply and good prices will be seen red. Iha Oregouiun of recent date pre eents the followiug editorial on the apple situation of the future: Those farmers who hesitate to plant apple trees for tear of overstocking the market may learn something now if they wiU. New Vork has just re ceived a cousigunieut of apples from Australia and New Zealand, aud the fruit is said to be supeiioi in appear ance to the Americau product. The production of apples baa developed rapidlly iu this oountry for the last few years, but we still fait to raise enough tlret class fruit to supply the home demand and the foreigu mar ket. The best goes abroad ; the infer ior fruit is oifered at home and nat urally spoils for want of buyers. There should be no interior apples on the market. It pays better to make the whole orop of first quality than to have some good specimens and many bad ones. The oronardiat who oifeis inferior apples for sale picks his own pocket; and until ev erybody who wishes to eat apples oan purchase a supply of good fruit from early fall till Me spring at a Jreasona. ble price, there is not the slightest danger of overstocking the market, a The use of apples for habitual food, like that of cheese, is a practice which is only beginning to be com mon in this country. Americans used to believe that fruit was all very well as a luxury, but of little value for nutriment. The man who works must have his rations of meat. We have now learned that, for sedentary worker i at any rate, fruit is superior to meat as a food. In faot, many sen sible ueople have come to Ihe conclu sion that our national dyspepsia is caused bv the use of too much meat at the table aud the negleot ot the more rational diet which nature pro vides. This view becomes more attractive when one remembeis the constantly increasing cost ot meat with the small prospect there is that it will ever fall again to former figures. Theeubanoed value of laud finds its natural expres sion in the rising price of meat, and uulesi some great oommeioial disaster should depress rents beyond all ex pectation, Been foods will never again be cheap in America. Vegetable food is not su dependent as meat upon rent, sinoe more can be produoed to the acre. It is therefore quite certain to happen in this country, as it has elsewhere, that as the value of laud rises people ot moderate means must depend more aud more upon fruit and grain for their diet. No prospeot could be more agreeable tor the or chardist; but it is also agreeable to eveibyody else, or it ought to be, be cause, when we have learned to forego our roasts and fries and have learned to satisfy our appetites with apples and beans, we shall live longer and enjoy life better. 85,000 iu Cash Prizes. HOOD RIVER FRUIT GROWERS UNION A Union of the People, for the People and by the People The Union in 1905 sent its Messenger to every city of 10,000 and up on the Union Pacific and Great Northern railroads between here and Chicago, and a representative to every city of 500 and up in Eastern Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Prices have been improving ever since, and last year it scored a success by obtaining the highest prices realized for twelve years. Last year the Union advised growers in advance that good prices would be realized, and those who ehipped through the Union realized from 25 to 75 cents more than ifthey had disposed of their berries by se'ling. We fell justified in saying that owing to our splendid connections established for this year and the light crop in other districts, the famous Hood River strawberry will bring prices that will compare favorably with last year, and are hoping for even better prices if the weather con tinues favorable to shipping.
