It !m not been many yetus since what is now tbe Crapper district was a wilderness in habited solely by tbe frolicking squir rel and hooting owl. When school district No. 61 was oreated ft appeared as though itoould never attain a commendable degree of strength. Howevei, tbe school yeai just closed gives an enrollment of 70 pupils in charge of two teachers. Ibe origiual school building was a struct ure 24x36 feet. When tbir was built it was thought tbat it would be suili oiently large to accommodate all of tbe pupils who would ever live in this district to attend school. It was soon found that tbe building was too small, so last year an addition was built- to accommodate tbe increased number of scholars, and we are safe to predict that they will nBed to build several more additions before tbe oouutry reaches its maximum development. Ube school is supplied witb fine spring water piped from a spring on the Win. Crapper place, and the sobool also has a splendid circulating library stocked with a good eelection of books The teachers, who have just closed an eight months term, have given tbe beet of eatisfactiou and bave become very popular as tbe result of tbeir prolicieuoy and fidelity. Miss Horns has taught the three lower grades, aud Miss Kydiugs has taught the live higher grades. Miss .Burns, who ap plied for next year, has been retaiin ed by the board. Tbe diiectors, con sisting of tbe folKwiug Jtnembers, namely: O. A. McCurdy, E. E. Ly ons aud Charles Keed, with A. A. Oatehell, as clerk, have given tbe dis trict a very economical and satisfac tory administration. The following program was a fitting finale for the year's work: Closing day exercises by the school. Leslie Butler Returns from Trip. Leslie Butler, ot the Butler Bank ing company, of tbis city, who ao oompanied the Portlaud business men on their excuision trip to eastern Or egon and western Idaho, returned to flood River on the speoia) train Sun day morn log. Mr. Butler stated to a Glacier rep resentative that tbe trip of the busi ness meu into the rural districts 'if the state will provo- a lasting benefit to qK who are effected by tbe business inte ots of our coast. 'Jho Portland business men, who had . never before seen the vast re souicas ot these states, and the dor mant possibilities ot soil and mine, were awe struck by tbe vastneis ot tbe present developementa and tbe im measurable magnitude of tbe virgin soil awaiting tbe builder of tbe borne. Mr. Bntlir said: "The receptions accorded us as we traveled from place to place is beyond my power to de scribe Tbe spirit underneath it all was so thoroughly genuine that it made us feel our sense ot uowortbi- ness." Tbe trip was enjoyed by all aboard, and was devoid of serious ao- cidente. Tbe only incident that proved annoying was tbe derailment of a Pullman sleeper near Biggs as they were on tbeir return from Sbanlko. Ibe sleeper was detaobed f com tbe train and left standing awaiting tbe arrival of the wrecking oar. - No one was injured and tbe party proceeded on tbeir homeward '.rip. The J1 icior supplied Mr. Butler witb 1000 neatly printed cards con taining data of our commercial and argicultural piosperiiy and progress which he distributed at tbe various points enroute. The contents of these mute mt'Sceneers bave been printed in full by some of our exchanges, and will undoubtedly bear Iruit. Kerry Shippers Contracts. With only two weeks in wbiob to Hie petitions for tbe referendum witb the secietary of state and only four petitions filed to date, aggregating less than 2UU signatures of tbe neces sary 4GG6 for tbe referendum of tbe university appropriation, tbe ques tion now arises as to tbe legality of tbe petitions already filed and in cir- nlHtion, and the probabilities are that tbe wbole thing will be knocked on the bead on account of an error on ihe part of tbe drafters of tbe petition in failing to state the title of tbe act correctly. Tbe question has been sub mitted to tbe attorney general for an opinion, which will probably be forth coming at once. PUBLIC SALE A. R.
