Boosts Hood River. Wiliam Crossley, senior member of the firm of D. Crossley & Sons, of Mew York and Liverpool, hps return ed from trip through the middle west aud tbe PaoiOo coast. Mr. Crosley visited Watsonville, Californ ia, and other points in that state and also tbe Hood River valley apple growing section. . Aa was mentioned in the Journal at tbe time, D. Crossley & Sons intro duced an innovation i during tbe season now drawing to a close, by exporting Hood .River valley apples to Englnnd early in tbe season, and while someot tbe'r competitors thought at tbe time that it would prove a bad venture, Mr. Crossey states tbat tbe results proved very satisactory, and tbat be found tbe association well pleased with their returns. - This association baa bad a very prosperous season, aud as far as early proppeota go, tbe indi cations are tbat they will have anoth er good year during the coming sea son. Mr. Crossley states that the Hood River apple growers bave a gold mine Id their orchard, and tbat real estate men and others are rapidly growing rich out in tbat section. - , "To show you how they make mon ey," said Mr. Ciossley, 'I will tell yon ot one man whom I mot: ' He is making business of buying tbe fruit land, setting it in apples and tbeo selling it when it reacbes the enorm ous rioe wbiob the -apple orchards command. He buys land for about $100 per acre, then sets in apple trees, when its. value is immediately . In creased 100 per cent. It is then rent ed to farmers who grow strawberries and other proucts upon tbe land, un til tbe orobard is five years old, when the land will sell for as much as $1,000 an acre." Produce Record. Fruit Inspector Roasted. Whatoom county's fruit inspector, aa well as the county commipsionet, came in for a roast at tbe meeting ot tbe chamber of commerce last night, when President Fitzgerald, of the Whatoom County Fruit Grower asso ciation, asked the support of the chamber in solving the question that baa recently arisen over a decision . of the supreme court of tbe state requir ing tbat tbe fruit inspectors must be elected. Fitzgerald stated 'tbat tbe trait inspector of this county in tbe past bad done little good for tbe ftuit interests of tbe oounty, being handi capped to a. certain extent by tbe commissioners and that at this par ticular time bis services were much in need In tbe orchards of tbe ooun ty. - . .. It'is tbe wish of tbe members of the Fruit Growers association of . tbis oounty tbat more eprsyinp be done and that better care be taken' et the orchards in order that tbe standard of tbe fruit grown in tbe county can be bettered. It is urged tbat aa in spection be made at tbis time, but as everybody ia up in the air on tbe de cision of tbe supreme court affecting tbe inspectors no one knows jnsl what steps to take. Assurance has been given tbat if the decision is de clared far freacbing by tbe attornev general that Governor Mead will call tbe special meeting of tbe legislator immediately. Apple Borer Trenbles Orrhardists. 1 be "flat-beaded apple tree borer" is coming Into prominence aa a Dest wbiob promises to make an abundance ot trouble for every orcbardist in Wasbintgoo, particularly on tbe west ern side of tbe state. Ibe state col lege ex pennant station staff recently investigated a large orobard and found that three-fourths of tbe apple trees were damaged by the borer. In searching tor tbe pest tbe method used by tbe oollee experts is to loos en or out through tbe outer bark of tbe tree and if present, tbe grubs will be ,1 und under tbe bark. At tbis time of year they are about three fourbs ot an inob long, with large flat beads. If tbe apple trees are newly transplanted ones, it will invar ibly be found tbat tbe borer, if at work, baa killed a great many ot them. The flat- beaded grub is especially dangerous. for so stealthily doea be work tbat of ten he will destroy tree before his presence is eveu suspected. In righting tbis nuisance, tbe meth od used by tbe .college staff is to scrape tbe trunk of tbe tree, and dig tbe grntj out with knife tben wash tbe trunk with a solution ot lye. or similar preparation. Tbe flat beaded borer Is a new comer in tbat state. but has made remarkable progress in 'noreusng bis kind. Ibe experiment station start believes that be is one of tbe coming problems wbiob apple growers oi tbe state will bave to com bat, and this is tbe best time of tbe year in wbiob to get at bim.
