LOOKING BACK-
WARD AN ESSAY
(Written by (Georgia Henoett, 8tb
grade pupil, and read at the oloal og
exercise, of the Barrett school Apiil
19, 2007.)
It ia one of the greatest pleaaurea I
enjoy to look backward orer the daja
of my lite in the Barrett public
schools.
If my memory serves me correctly
just 100 year li tve (town ioto eterni
ty. In my fancy 1 can hear the old
school bell oalliog oa into line, and
can aee oar professor standing in the
bill bidding us welootne as e file paa
him to our respective rooms.
A I have been isolated from th
affaira of the world daring the last
few years, I have not kept abreast of
the .wonderfol changes tint have been
taking place. ,Wbeo 1 glance bauk
over the past, tilled with the wonder
ful aobievemeuta of men and women,
I am leminded of the first message
sent by telegraph "What bath Uod
wrought." Number 23-23.
lime forbids that I mention all of
my schoolmates hence I will oaLt
your atteution to those only, with
whom 1 was most intiiuiately associ
ated. Soon after graduating Karl Thomp
son, the natural genius of the school,
completed an aiisbip. Ibis had, with
out success for any years, been au ex
periment, but Earl's experiment
pioved to be successful. Travel to
distant and unknown parts of the
world was so simple that in a few
years uo part of it was left unexplor
ed. I, being a classmate of Earl, pro
cured one of these ships at a normal
figure and equipped it for a voyage to
the noitb and south poles.
After many years of wandering in
these desolate regions, I concluded to
turn to South America. There 1 trav
eled many more yeara. My ship was
so perfect that wtb little effort 1
could lower it to the ground, rest for
a time, get provisions, reembark and
sail again.
One very warm day in June 1 came
down to the earth by the side of a
great forest near the Amazon river,
and in this forest there weie all kinds
of bird. Among them 1 notioed one
that resembled a parrot, aud observed
that it kept up a continual chatter.
Finally 1 heard it say what seemed to
me to be "Barrett." I listened and
it repeated the same word over and
over many times. Once it seemed to
say "Barrett public school." 1 had
not heard this tor so long a time 1
was perfectly amazrd, aud repeated
the word aftei It. "Barrett, Barrett,
Barrett publio school. "
The bird came to me directly aud I
peceived that i' could talk, so 1 be
gan asking questions. In our chat 1
learned that it was cue of the stu
dents o the Barrett publio sohooL I
never had beileved in the transmigra
tion of the soul, tut here 1 begun to
wonder bow this could be anything
else. How could 1 account tor this in
any other way than that some one
from Barrett publio school had died
and the departed spirit had taken up
its aboode in this bird of the Amazon
forest. At last it disclosed to me that
it had been a spirit for many, many
yeara, and had been traveling in un
limited apace which was all very well,
but to the peculiarity ot the individ
ual make-up of its nature, this w
not the ideal life for it, and that it
preferred to be a being that had the
power to chatter and soream, came
from the fact that the bird was the
abode departed spirit of Earl Moses.
Eail told me to hasten back to Bar
rett and see there the wonderful ad
vaucemeut that bad taken place, lie
said tbeie 1 would Bod many things
to oooviuoe me of the truth ot the
transmigration ot the soul and that it
had all come from the teaobings of
Miss Wilson. '
I was so anxious to see and know
the wonderful faots that 1 immediate
ly embarked in my sbip aud iu a few
hours 1 was sailing up to the plaoe 1
bad known as Barrett, but how ohang
ed. Nothing was natural. The soul
of the old publio school had been
transmigrated and housed iu a mag
nificent high school, supporting sev
eral chairs.
Among these I found the chair of
embaiming this is hardly an appro
priate teim, but suoh 1 will call it for
want of a better name. Of oourse 1
had been traveling and had not kept
up with the procession.
At the head of this department,
whom should I find but our wise and
timid William Alexander Davidson.
Never after reading Poe's wonderful
tale, "A Few Words With a Mummy
did Wilile rest until he had oomplet
aA . method of reviving mummies,
and the soieuce that treats of living
on the installment plan which be bad
nrnd from the Egyptian mummy
that was so wonderfully ievived after
having been embalmed tor seven Hun
dred years. The process of eaibalm
ing employed by Dr. William David'
nn la almost the same as that prao
tinari hv the EuvDtians. but now the
has been much improved by
the former. It is too long to be given
here, but If you would, know of its
wonderful properties and benefits you
may call at the mummy soeives.
The Hrat eubicet on wbioh the doo
tor nraotieed was his Bohoolmate,
Kenneth Shoemaker. The process ii
like this; Ihe body is cov
thick with a coating of
tffv. mixed with a cin
nemon and epioe of doves etc. Ihe
body ia then wrapped as the mummies
were and put away in the cases till
the time desired to revive them, then
a current of electricity or something
o: the kind is used foi that particular
purpose. After this pioved such a
nearly every one in
itdvautaue of the install
n.nt nlnn. esceoiallv the pupils and
the oublio schools.
The first I Wilt mention was Mies
Wilson. She went into a mutual
with Arthur Moes that
she would get cased as a mummy for
in and thau he would be just a lit-
i ..Mar than she. then he bad her
rev vpd and they were married.
Mian Knali is the same old maid

n. William Davidson has taken
"nartnnr his schoolmate, Sebil
Leach, and she cooks the sugar taffy
' .ith which he embalms the mummies
and Lawrence Dornhecker has gone as
a missionary to India, lie nasiearueu
livina on the install
ment plan and is introducicg it into
ia, Rllan Moses has been tians
ia now a beautiful bird
of paradise. Grace Sherrieb la the
belle of Barrett and like all batte flies
lies in the cbiysalia case all the time
except duiing the spring of the year
she cornea out in the brightest colors
to attend commencement aud summer
picnics. Tborvald Nelson, since be
Ing revived from toe sleep ot Kip Van
Winkle, has devoted Lis time and tal
ent to the invention of new tele
phone. Thorvald ia slolw but sure,
and we expect to see him sitting up
on the top round of tLe ladder of
fame, aud we were much gratified to
find Lester Murphy at be head of tbe
commercial department of our school
with Liavona More as first assistant in
stenography. Lavona baa been able
to bold down tbi chair since tbe
school was installed.
Tbe students are doing excellent
work and congiulate themselves tbat
they are not competed to leave borne
and go to Salem or Portland for a
business eduoation.
Laura Henriobs, after teaobing In
the conservatory of musio for a num
ber of years, purchased an automobile
and ia now making a tour of tbe
world. Clarence Dornhecker and Ber-
tbel Copple have accepted tba mum
my shroud and will not be beard from
until tbe next generation.
1 have given as correct a history of
few of my school mates aa my poor
memory wilt allow. Otbeit are now in
the first degree taking life on the in
stallment plan and will some day
astonish tbe world.
In fact this wonderful discovery baa
proved a perfect boom to Barrett in
general, for hundieda of people are
taking aniuteirupted ease aud are in
the orysalis state most ot their lives.
Wood Words for Chamber Iain's Cough
Remedy.
People everywhere take pleasure in
testifying to tbe good qualities of
Chamberlain's Cough Kemedy. Mis.
Edward Phillips, of Barclay, Md.f
writes: "I wish to tell you tbat 1 can
recommend Chamberlain's Cough
Kemedy. -y little girl, Catherine,
who ia two years old, baa been taking
this remedy whenever she has bad a
cold since I contracted a dreadful
cold myself, but 1 took Chamberlain's
Cough Kemedy and was soon as well
as ever." Ibis remedy la for sale by
Ke!r & Cass.
Wonderful Eczema Care.
"Our litle boy bad eczema for five
years," writes w. A. Adams, Henriet
ta, Pa. "Two ot our borne doctors
said tbe case was hopeless, bis lungs
being affected, we then employed
otber dootors, but no benefit resulted.
By chance we read about Kleorlo Bit-
tars, bought a bottie and soon noticed
improvement. We continued this
medicice tritil several bottles were
used, wheu our boy was completely
cimd." Best of all blood medicines
and body building health tonics.
