Harry Bai ley, who ia now manager of the local office in Hood Kiver. ia powerlevs to render a more efficient seivice under pieaent conditions. Harry ia a most obliging official, and should not be blamed on acoount of the negligence of tbe company. The young ladiet who opeiate the awitoh board are over worked and under paid. Ibis condi tion placet them in a potition where they do not especially care for thiii job, hence, tbey become careless in measure, and prompt service ia nut always afforded. It ia hoped that the company will make tbe needed obange, by supplying tbe office with a modern awitoh board. In cane thU improvement is not made, we believe that a looal company will take tbt matter in band and give us serviot ooinmeniurate with interests. J food River Applt-s Awakes Interest. Hood Kail r ad Co. bad about 75 crda of alut wood piled near the wagon bridge thai crosses Hood river, and it is possibli that a spark from the eugine tbat wa switching in tbe yard lodged in tbt wood and caused the lire. The wiuo was blowing quite strongly from tin west and it soon fanned the littlt flame into a mighty blaze. Tbe fire company responded prompt ly with tbe chemical engine and ex nauscea its supply without apparent effect. The water plugs were at tot great a distance from tbe tire to be oi service as tbe hose was entirely tot abort to reach tbe flames. A amah bose waa attached to the railroad com pany's water pipe and this was usen to till tbe buckets which were passeo from man to man for the distauce ul about 100 feet, and then carried ii the ladder and applied to the blaze. ibis was a most inconvenient way tc tight fire, hut all bands worked like members of a paid fire department., A small hose was flnall secured and extended to tbe Ore wbloh disposed ol the bucket brigade. It appeared foi a time tbat tbe tire was under con trol, and tbat tbe bridge could be saved, but tbe extreme heat caused bj the fire underneath and augmented by tbe heavy wind, , would rekindle the blaze as soon us the water tvas turned in another direction. The flames crept slowly along tbe stringers underneath tbe bridge uutil it hud eaten its way tbrough between the beuts, thus sup aratiug the heavy timbers oue from tbe other until tbey fluallytiroke loose and loll to tbe ground below. Three spans, each 20 feet in length, and two bents represents the loss, which is estimated at (200. The bridge was immediately repaired and will probably be ready for trailla today.
