HOOD RIVER QLAOIEB, THURSDAY. DECEMBER 20, 1906 AISAITZfi r HEALTH v mm ODELL. WW m Absolutely Pure A Cream of Tartar Powder, free from alum or phos photlc acid HAS HO SUBSTITUTE A CHRISTMAS MEDITATION. The Spirit of Chrlntmas Making All Things New. "Merry ChrlMtmu to all the children, Wherever they may chance to be! To'fhe merriest band on the sea or the land, Wherever i be Christ child reaches hit hand and aayi Little one come unto Me." "Merry Chrlatmaa to all the children, In palace ' i t i I ' i 1 1 t. With many a toy, and many a Joy, The dear little darlings ao cunning and coy, Kach Bweetbeurt, or Dimple, or Dot." ChrUtmRS la a fealval of gladneen, the birthday or man' bope, a carol val of poetry, story and iodb. The Chrlntmaa ueasoa la a time of family reunions, then the children in aobooL factory, farm and forest re turn home. Tbey go from the etruff gle and competition of life to the old homestead in the valley. Around the old fire place, boya and girls long since grown to manhood 'a and wom anhood's daily task, lecall . the etory and adventures of youtb'a golden hours. They review the wanderings far and near over meadows and bills. U! happy Uriel mag time, wben wo with the family circle gather about familiar scenes and join In dblMbood games. Wben we oiime walking upon the beauty of this earth it was like a fresh and dewy morning. Sometimes we seemed to tee mountains olad in pure white snow. Alter 40 or CO years of experience we see a few snow traces of bloody foot prints and Impurity ; a few blossoma of the dawn are swept away. Wcf have foil the U ghtlug wind of time, which has loft the ilowers drncplng, but the Christmas spirit makes things new. It is the Christ mas spirit which makes the deserts blossom and reveals treasurers of im mortal worth. At Christmas time we learn to prize the joys aud sancti ty of home. Uod meant that we Bnould live in homes, in iamilies, - where each is the servant of ail, and all are the servants of each. The most primitive of all ohurohes la the homo. There is the domestio altar over which the father and mother pieside, there sacrifices are made, there is the seat of culture whloh moulds charac ter from the cradle to the grave. Home is the best and surest place of preparation for a career on earth and a home eternal. Out of humble homes, with only paper curtains and rag carpets, have come great v en. We need the home memory aud the borne rest. The years are short enough and time goes quickly with busy people. We work in a rush aud eat in a hurry. We A met loans cook iu a very hot oven. We need to slow up at Christmas and let the rush and friction and heat of lite oool down in the home. Make home attractive. Indulge your ohil dren in a few cheerful things at Christmas. It will warm the affec tions, nurse weakness into life and give the home a bright heart shine. Humanity will always be interested. In Christmas, it is no myth; no fair flower that withers in ycur band; but it is reminder that heavenly light waa brought into this world by a lit tle child. We will need the cheer. the heart warmings of the Christmas tide. We need something that shall give meaning and relish to the pro digious efforts and petty results of life. The Cbiistmaa null It elves im pulse to heroio daring'and a i ; eternal slgninioHiioe to our line ting borne. What would our world be without a Christmas? In English homes it al ways baa been a time of merry mak ing. Here la a verte over 4iK) years old "When Cryst was born, O, Mary tree, In Bedlam in tht fayre oyte. angellis saugen with mirth and glee in exioeuus golrlee. " Une of Crom well's major-geueials describes in lively verse Christmas: ',Now all our neighbor' chimneys nmoke, And ChrlHtmaa block, are burning; Their oven, they with buked meat choke, And all their spit are turning. Without the door let sorrow lie, And If for cold It hap' to die, We'll bury It In tlirlstmus pie And er more be merry." Uood-natured Walter Scott wrote: "Kuglnnd waa merry England, when ul.l C'hrlxtmas brought hi, upon tiln, 'TwaaChrlHtma, broached the nilghtlcNt air; Twasl'hrlHtmna told the men-lent talc; A CbrlHtma, gambol oft would cheer A poor', mail', heart through half the ycur. Let us be more merry thai) olilen England, and let the songs ami sto ries have their merry round. Let us then welcome the spirit of Christmas making all things new. It would bid ii to cease loving our self will aud pay uo more tithiugs to evil, nor ciedit falsehood. If we are pre vented fiom seeing the sun it is be cause there are shadows. Christmas is the birthday of man's hope, the coming of the spirit making things new. For one to live iu this world abounding iu homes, beauty, plenty, poetry, music and the Christmas gift of Uod is like one whs dies of thirst while the niusio of warbling biooks makes melody In his ears; it is like one who dies of starvation while all about him the graineries are ll.hd with goldeu grain. We send a Christmas greetiug and hope that the Christmas spirit may persuade the lives of old and youuj. of friends at borne and of those fur away. Come then, let us fling away on CbristmBs night our cares and let us forget the burdens of many years of time. "Let all our neighbor's chimneys smoke" and we will go borne and be boys and gills again with Christmas play and spirit to obeer our poor hearts through all the year. W. 0. Pure air is an absolute necessity, and no effort should be spared to keep it so in every house. Where open-flame illuminants rob the air of oxigen and turn it into carbonic acid gas, pure air is an impossibility. Air poisoned by the flame of n gas jet, or that of an oil lamp is unfit for breathing purposes and exercises a decidedly injurious effect upon the occupant of the room. Electric Light burning in an air-tight bulb leaves the air of the room pure and fresh, and furnishes a better, brighter and safer light than any other medium.
