CbaOn baa been a resident of The Dallea tot a year and a half, having come here from Klickitat county. Ha baa been working in res taurant? aout tbe city and recently drove from Cut heart, lie is a mar ried man and haa bad douiet-tic trou ble, in which it ia said a young wom an figured Last night, while under tbe influence of liquor, be bad a quar rel with Frank Heater in tbe Maeoot aaloon and wag knocked down. Deep ly cbagiined, be went op to tbe Brew ery saloou, and, as was bia custom, went into the ottice. Supposing he was going to telephone, no oue inter fered with bin). A few moments after ward a shot was heard aud rushing into tbe otlioe they found bim lying there with a bullet hole iu bia temple. A pistol lay beside bim, and be was in au unoonsciona condition. Dr. Lowe was called and dressed the wound, finding that the ball had en tered tbe head above the right temple aud ranged toward tbe center of tbe forehead. Luckily it did not pene trate deep, and bis injuries are not fatal. He was takeu to tbe McUune sanitarium, -where be is reooveriug from the wound in a surprising man ner. Chronicle. -Puddy, Nan Cooper and Mr Mrs. C. C. Walton, Fred Wlsbart, CharUi Thomas, Jo lleae. Mason Baldwin and Lawreuce Pnddy. Tba boys' social Saturday evening waa a grand aaocesa both financially and socially. Tbe program ra very interesting though short, owing to the illueaa of some of the performer. Tbe aonga by the boya themselves weie veiy much enjoyed. Tbe selling of tbe basket followed and tber waa very lively bidding, tbe highest bask et bringing to. 50. On tbe baskets alone tbey realized $14.15 and then there waa a lunch counter and candy and popcorn for sale. In all tbey made $55.30. After expenses were paid tbey bad $48 left which tbey are going to use in purchasing suits. The boys appreciate very much the help that was given tbem by different per sons. Commissioner Hibbard waa op Sat ui day to Inspect tbe upper bridge and see about rebuilding it He baa ordered tbe lumber and the bridge Is to be rebuilt immediately. Theie was a meeting Saturday at the residenoe of Mr. A. B. Billing of the school boards of tbe two districts, Mount Hood aud Dee, to settle about dividiug tbe property of tbe old dis trict. Mr. Will Cribble baa moved bis family into tbe new bouse by the store. Mr. MoElroy and family have oome up from Hood River and are living on Dr. Shaw's place, which tbey have rented. Wasting Water Assets. California hag learned, not only that tbe ground may become water lagged by over irrigation, but that ill cmttidered drainage works and an in considerate use of the water obtained from wells may so reduce tbe sub-surface supply of water and so lower the water plane or "table" as to threaten the reversion of large areas to com parative unproductiveness. The Unit ed Stales Geological Survey bag dem onstiated that practically all tbe sub terranean waters of a large district in Southern California, embracing 775 square miles, are couneoted, and that every well taps a oommon supply. Tbe overworking of pumps, tbe use of larger volumes of water than is neces sary, and unwise drainage, have en riched tbe Ocean with a volume of water so much larger than tbe rain fa'l, tbat tbe water plane, which was 211 feet below the surface of the soil iulH'JH, is now 50 feet below. The Califoiuiaus have followed tbe Ameiicau nal it of believing natural resources to be "Inexhaustible," aud are amazed to hud tbat id respeot to water also tbey have lived beyond their means, as well as iu respeot to the timber supply, oil, natural gas, tlsh and game. California is by no means tbe only state where such a condition may occur, or where the discovery may be made, too late, tbat water is au asset which cannot be thrown away without a penalty. Drainage schemes should everywhere be manuged with a view to tbe possi ble future need of the water for lrri gaion. In tbe California distiiot named the waste may be repaired by the expensive woiks which aie to I biing water of tbe Owens river from the mountains to Los Angeles, and incidentally afford a volume for irri gation. But mouutain streams are not everywhere available. Maxwells Tradesman. i Persistent Advertising. Last week through some inadvert auoe of this office and the ad writer of Booth & Co., we failed to get tbe copy for tbelr change of ad. This is the first time in six years that tbe Big Store lias missed in furnishing this paper weekly with their bright snappy ads. It is a matter of some consideration to prepare an advertise went which is catchy, effect! Ye and yet entirely different each week for a period of six years without fail, and this occurence should be condoned on our part because we were particu larly busy with a rush of work, and on the part ot Booth & Co. because tbey are working night and day get ting in Bbape one of the finest lines of holiday g"ods ever shown here. r. Booth takes great pride in tbe advertising section of the local papers here and says that- no town in the state of its size can anywhere near eouul Hood Hirer advertisers iu ar tistic) and effectual make ups. He also claims, and we believe justly, credit for the initiative iu effecting this condition, when lie first began to advertise iu the Glacier six years ago, local merchants paid but little attention to their advevrtisements aud weekly changes was infrequent. Tbe advertising section of a news paper ie a valuable asset, end its at tractiveness is equal ia importance to ts news columns. This is one reason that tbe Glacier is known as one of tbe best newspapers iu the state, and we appreciate tbe assistance we bays so faithfully received from Booth A Co. toward making it so, and bespeak from our natrins the recognition wbicb they as modern advertUeis oeitainly deseive. MOUNT HOOD. Mr. Peter Feldthauseu has returned to Mount Hood. Mr Tomlinson an 1 his surveying party, who went up to Mount Hood lubt week returned Wednesdav. Tbev renort tbat they accomplished tbe woik but they bad a pretty cold trip. Tbey left tbe wagons at tbe Elks Beds, and packed their blankets and provisions the rest of tbe way on horses Tbev found enow drifted In to tbe rooms at tbe inn, in spite of the secuie fastening of tbe doors. A storm of wind and snow came up while tbey were up tbere and tbe ca bles on the inn rattled in a most spooky fashion. Tbe thermometer in fha rnnm in which thnv had break fast stood 10 degrees below zero the morning they left. Tbey were glad to get back to a litle less rigorous climate. In nwnnna tn an invitation from Mr. Mclsaacs to his Sunday school class abonat a dozen of ti3 class went to his house Wednesday evening and such a good time they bad.
