wound, finding that the ball had en

aud ranged toward tbe center of tbe
forehead. Luckily it did not pene
trate deep, and bis injuries are not
fatal. He was takeu to tbe McUune
sanitarium, -where be is reooveriug
from the wound in a surprising man

interesting though short, owing to

of tbe basket followed and tber waa
very lively bidding, tbe highest bask
et bringing to. 50. On tbe baskets
alone tbey realized $14.15 and then
there waa a lunch counter and candy
and popcorn for sale. In all tbey
made $55.30. After expenses were
paid tbey bad $48 left which tbey are
going to use in purchasing suits. The
boys appreciate very much the help
that was given tbem by different per
sons. Commissioner Hibbard waa op Sat
ui day to Inspect tbe upper bridge
and see about rebuilding it He baa
ordered tbe lumber and the bridge Is
to be rebuilt immediately.
Theie was a meeting Saturday at
the residenoe of Mr. A. B. Billing of
the school boards of tbe two districts,
Mount Hood aud Dee, to settle about
dividiug tbe property of tbe old dis
trict. Mr. Will Cribble baa moved bis
family into tbe new bouse by the

Mr. MoElroy and family have oome
up from Hood River and are living
on Dr. Shaw's place, which tbey have

the reversion of large areas to com

ed Stales Geological Survey bag dem
onstiated that practically all tbe sub
terranean waters of a large district in
Southern California, embracing 775
square miles, are couneoted, and that
every well taps a oommon supply. Tbe
overworking of pumps, tbe use of
larger volumes of water than is neces
sary, and unwise drainage, have en
riched tbe Ocean with a volume of
water so much larger than tbe rain
fa'l, tbat tbe water plane, which was
211 feet below the surface of the soil
iulH'JH, is now 50 feet below.
The Califoiuiaus have followed tbe
Ameiicau nal it of believing natural
resources to be "Inexhaustible," aud
are amazed to hud tbat id respeot to
water also tbey have lived beyond
their means, as well as iu respeot to
the timber supply, oil, natural gas,

condition may occur, or where the
discovery may be made, too late, tbat
water is au asset which cannot be
thrown away without a penalty.
Drainage schemes should everywhere
be manuged with a view to tbe possi
ble future need of the water for lrri
gaion. In tbe California distiiot
named the waste may be repaired by
the expensive woiks which aie to I
biing water of tbe Owens river from
the mountains to Los Angeles, and
incidentally afford a volume for irri
gation. But mouutain streams are

to get back to a litle less rigorous
climate.
