HOOD RIVEEQLACIER THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1906 c WHERE THEY STAND ON COUNTY DIVISION J. F. Ifoudriuka, naya the Ortgon Journal, repreeutatie from Wasco, wbo wan iu Portland yesterday (rum bit Cascade Locks borne, will not tut tier the bill (or toe creatioa of de cade oouoty io the next esinri of tbe legislature unless it is proved to him tliiit tbe majority of the people of the interested aistrirl really desire that a new county he created. To piofe that the majority of the people -test re a county division it will be neceaaary for tbe people of what is cut out (or Cascade county to prepare a petition signed by a majority ol the residents and voters. In tbe event of tbis be ing done Mr. Hendricks will support we county division scheme earnestly, knowing it to he the wisn of bis con stituents. The new member from Wasco in tends to follow out the theory that si lence is gulden during tbe session. He takes the position that as thin is the Brut time be has ever served in the legislature be can It-am mere and do more by keeping still and working bard than by any other means. This be intends to do. "1 was invited to attend a meeting of tbe Hood Mver Commercial club'', said Mr. Hendrioks, "and 1 told tbem that I would be glao to meet with tbem and discuss tbe county division question provided thatSenator Wheal -don and Representative Kuowlei were also there. 1 will do what tbe people as a whole wish as shown by tbe ma jority, but will not be bound by the desires of a faction or a section." Senator Wbualdon, wbo was also in terviewed by tbe Journal, says be is still opposed to tke movement now being agitated iu Hood River (or tbe creation of Casoade county by tbe next session of the legislature. He, however, in bis attitude will be gov erned by the will of tbe majority of ' the peope of Wasco county. If a ma jority of tbe people desire to secede from tbe old county government tbe senator will not oppose tbeir wisb. He expresses regret at the possibility of losing the people of Hood River and that vicinity from tbe Wasco county government. Urowers's Meeting at Grants Pass. A fruit growers meeting is to be held iu Grants Pass Monday, Novem ber 12, under I be auspices of the Or egon Agricultural college and tbe Grants Pass Fruit Growers union, in co-operation with tbe Grants Pass Commercial club. Heretofore mining and lumbering have been tbe chief in dustries of this section of Rogue Riv er valley and these have built Grants Pass up to a thriving city of 5,000 population, and now it has been prov en by progressive tarmeis that tbe fruit industry, if fully developed will add as much wealth to Josephine county as both the mines. and the timber. The soil, climate and other condi tions are exactly tbe same as tbe neighboring on 'nty of Jackson, which has made a reputation for growing fancy Spitzeuberg and Newtown ap ples quite equal to Hood River, and pears that on the New York market for tbe past Ave year have led all tbe United States for tbe highest price, $2,000 per car being tbe lowest price this season, will) the woild'a record being made on a our of extra Cornice pears at $2,707. Tbo year reooid price for Rogue River pears last year was $2,42!). Rogue River valley is equally as famous for its fine grapes and peaches. With tbis encouragement before them, both the farmers and the business men are taking an active interest in the building up of the fruit industry to its fullest extent. Tbe attendance at this fruit grow ers' meeting piouiises to be tbe larg est ever beld in Rogue River valley. Tbe programme hag lieeu arranged to cover all tbe principal features of tbe fruit industry. Those taking part W'U sneak upon but one tonio each and no lalk is tJ exceed ten minutes in length. Tbe only exoeption to this rule will be to;Professor A. B. Cord lev and Professor C. I. Lewis, of the Oregon Agricultural college, wbo will each be allowed all tbe time they may require to fully present their sub jects. A question box will be an im portant featuro, and all attending tbe meeting will be supplied with a pad of paper and tbey will write tbeir queries and place the slips in the box, to be answered at the close of the reg ular programme. Oregonian. Wood Word for Fire Department. S. E. Bartmess, one of the persons whose bouse was threatened by the fire which took plaoe last Thursday says that when tbe large hose reached the fire and the force was turned on it was the wettest water be everlaaw. He said it reminded him of the Jour net's "What Little Johnnie Wanted" only it ended with evtry wish being gratified. TbeiuimenHe rubber python witb tail so re wed to Davenport's fire plug roaching up tbe bill to the burn ing building and with its bead thrust through the roof seemed to write and bias in fiendish glee, and not oontent with putting out the fire alone was also determined to blow all tbe wood out of tbe wood house. He says if the kicker against every movement the fire company has made could be placed in theposition tbat he and oth ers interested occupied In that half hour be would be forever cured and (eel like taking otf bis bat to the boya and asking to be forgiveD (or what be bad doue Give tbem a boost and not a kick. 1 tell you tbe Hre pro tection service looked good to me. H4 River Aaale. Witb permission of the editor 1 woull like to answer a atatemeDt made by a Mr. Lowusdale, of Lafa yette, Or., in tbe Oregoaiao of San der, 1 November 4, and at tbe same time ask him a few questions. Mr. Lownsdale caya that to two or chards in tbe Willamette valley there are more 8 it it n bergs grown than in the entire Hood River vallev. I ohal- iepge our (riend to prove bit state ment. He aays tbat it lav not generally known, but it nevertheless a fact, that one man in tbe (entire) Willam ette has for a number of years receiv ed just tbe aame price for bia apples as bava the growers of Hood River. That is an elegant showing, isn't it? Oue man out of possibly one thous and, while in Hood River I believe 1 can honestly say tbat our percentage will run 99 men out of every 100. Mr. Lownsdale also aaya tbat just as good apples can he crown in tbe Willamette valley as oan be grown in Hood River and tbat tu an expeii nieut made with Willamette valley ap ples, which were put in cold storage in Hood River, it was found tbat they would keep just aa well as those grown in Hood River. If thia ia a fact wby baveu't the farmers of tbe Webfoet oountry takeu advantage of that experiment and by now bad tbeir im ense valley in beating apple or chards, which they oouid at any mo ment sell at tbeir own price. Can tbe Willamette valley farmer sell bia (arming land at from $400 to 11,000 per acre? No I The Willamette valley has for a uumber of years been at a standstill, and tbe little valley of Hood River is pushing more and more to tbe front every day. The people of today are of too in telligent a clasa to allow such a bonan za aa we have at Hood River to slip through their fingera. Heie I would like to ask Mr. Lownsdale wby a man tbat ia lookiog for tbe almighty dol lar, as is the American of today, will raise wheat at an average ot 25 bush els to tbe aore, which will bring bim an average of 75 centa per bushel, and will bring a gross inoome of $18. 75 per acre, when be can be raising ap ples on tbe same that will net to bim at the very lowest consideration $100 per aoref - . . Is it nature of tbe American? Our friend, Mr. Lownsdale, evident ly doea not understand wby Hood River apples are such keepers. It la not altogbetber the apples, but the principal reason for it ia the climate we have, and for tbat reason I am not at all surprised that wben Willamette valley apples were shipped to Hood River and put in oold sorage here, tbey kept almost tbe same as do those grown in tbe Hood River valley. I am pioud of tbe chance to toy that there has not yet been a terrlto ly found where there can be apples raised and kept like they can in Hood River valley. K. C. Brock. Still Worrying About Hood River. Before Hood River puta all the gor geous tail feathers in ber bat. she should remember that a pioneer rancher of Malheur county to be ex act. Mr. C. W. Mallett-a few years ago grew some apples that wentlwelve to tne dox, Dut as tne rainoads want ed all tbey would sell for and a little more, tbe outside world beard but lit tle of them. But there waa some mighty fine baoon in that valley that fall. Oregonian. Booming White Salmon. Judge W. Brook, once one of the leading business men of Moro, now a prospective wealthy fruit producer on the North Bauk near White Salmon, baa been visiting Moro tillicuma this week. He carries with bim samples of bis orchard which cause one's mouth to water, as an evidence of tbe beauty and bounty of apple raising tbere, the true rival of Hood River valley. HiXCbange. A Narrow Escape. V. C. Brook, accompanied by Mrs. Brock and children, bad a narrow es cape from being thrown Into the Colu'iibia river last Sunday wbile crossing tbe ferry from White Sal mon. When nearing tbe Oreogn side the horses became uneasy and started to back tbe vehicle, wbicb waa occu pied by Mr. Brock and bis family. Before tbey could be stopped tbey backed tbe oariage oS the boat into the water, not however, before tbe Brock family had managed to et out. Fortunately the ferryboat bad arrived in shallow water. Had tbe aocldent occurred a few minutes be fore it is probable tbat tbe horses would bave been drowned, tbe car riage lost, and other serious conse quences entailed. Tbe team waa led out of tbe river none the worse for tbe episode. Sixty Weeks for tl.75. , Don't put off nntil tomorrow tbe matter of subscribing for tbe i'outb's Companion.
