growers who produce a few hundred
bushels of Spitzeo bergs, but tbe lots

their attention to one or two varie
ties that are sure to find favor with
shippers.
Many orobard ists proceeded upon
the theory that it would be best to
pknt a number of varieties, ao that 11
one kind did not bear in an' unfavor
able season, another variety would,
and tbe grower would be pretty sure
of a crop Many were influenced fay
other reasons, but in tbe end they
have found that in order to And a
ready market, they must liave enough
fruit of one well known variety to en
able the shipper to baudie it econom
ically. Without a oold storage plant and a
packing bouse, tbe Salem fruit hand
lers cannot compete witb Ilood River
buyeie. Tbe latter offer higher prices
and get tbe apples. When Salm
and other valley towns are prepared
to handle tbe (rait valley shippers will
be able to outbid buyers from other
eectiona, and tbe fruit will go out as
a Willamette valley product. In the
meantime this section is not only
gaining no reputation for its apples,
but ia contributing to a very great
extent to tbe upbuilding of a reputa
tion for auother section.
The excellence of apples grown in
this part of tbe state waa convincing
ly shown In this city last Saturday.
Harry K. Spauldiug, enterprising
student at Willamette university,
bailing from Sunnyside, in tbe Yaki
ma valley, secured a show window in
tbe John Hughes store and displayed
a splendid collection of Yakima ap
ples, together witb an attractive lot
of photos and literature descriptive of
his borne territory. Tbe nerve of the
Yakima boy stunned the Salem apple
growera for a while, but when they
regained their senses they met bit
challenge by securing tbe opposite
window in tbe same store and put in
a display ot Willamette valley apples.
That the two displays are meritor
ious Jis evident from tbe large
crowds that have stood around the
windows most of the time siuce. Of
course, Salem people insist that tbe
Willamette valley exhibit is superior
to that from akima. Tbe Salam ap
ples were grown by L. T. Reynolds,
the Wallaoe orchard and Andrew Ver
cler. The Yak'nia boy at least made
tbe Salem people tit up and take no

Sew York Apple Market.
The receipts of applea this week
bave been unusually heavy for this
time of tbe year. Considering tbe
heavy offerings, prioas kept up re
markably well. Fancy and good fruit
moved well at good figures. It was
only tbe inferior fruit which was
dragging. There was a great deal of
this about. In the yards there were
quantities of bulk apples, wbiob
were bringing $1.25 and $1.50. A
great many of these were tbe apples
which wre blown from tbe trees by
the storm last week. Some of tbis
stock was barreled, and arrived here
to be told as No. 2. It looks all right,
but it wouldn't stand up if placed in
storage. It has to be marketed quick
ly, and tbe prices are shaded to make
a quick sale. It is generally conceded
that tbe storm did not injure tbe bet
ter fruit to any great extent. Tbe
damage was to tbe trees more tban to
tbe fruit. In all probability next year
the apple crop of tbe state will show
tbe effect of the storm.
Picking is well along thr. ugbout
the state. It is being pushed rapidly.
The storage bouses up state teport that
they bave a great deal of space to till
yet, but tbut all their room is con
tracted for. Tbe picking baa been
held back by tbe lack of labor. Farm
ers are doing what tbey can now to
got their fruit in before cold leather.
Receipts at the storages will no doubt
show considerable in urease during tbe
next 10 days. It is variously ei tiniEt
ed that anywhere from 40 and 60 per
cout of tbe fruit in Weetorn New York
is still in the hauda of the groii.
At tbe Barclay street dock f illy 60
per cent of the otfeiinge are itlern
fruit, tbe majority being Ben Davis.
Tbey are bringing $2.50 and $2.75 for
tbe best, witb ordinary and cloudy
going at $2 and $2.25. There does not
seem to be a good demand for Jona

claimed to be bia guardian, waa un

original of tbe picture wbicb had
been received from Walla Walla.
