INTERSTATE FAIR IS BIG SUCCESS Under tbe iuot prominiiiK condi tion! in iti history, nays the Spokes man Kevlew, tbe thirteenth minimi Spokane Interstate fair opened liiHt lueday aud will continue for two weeks. All exhibits wore on liiind and the ((rounds In perfoct condition when the gutes were thrown open to tho publio, Fully 14,000 poople bail pum d tbiouyh the turnstiles during the day and standing room was at a premium on oars loading to the fair grounds. The grand parade and fancy ilrnim bull, in charge of the Mystic Ordi r of K-Nak Ops made thn Mrst evening one long to he remembered. Among the attractions tn be seen at the fail- was the UolviJIe girls' hand ot 15 pleoea. '1 he baud is composed of 12 girls about l!i years old, and is aid to be one ot the best gill bands In the northwest. Xhe .baud is uni formed In while and presents an at tractive appearance. Fifty squaws, bucks and papooses are camped under tepees at the Inter state fair grounds. The Indians are all,of the Flathead tribe and are un der the direction of Arthur Dexter, 'The main building is tilled to over flowing with tbe exhibits of fruit. 'The Cheney Commercial club has line exhibit of fruit and hay. Their exhibit is arranged in a rattier unique manner. All around the booth mo bales of hay piled up almost to the top of the wall, aud ou this hay are set the exhibits ot fruit. Most of the fruit has been grown by James JjIii dahl. The fruit shows what can be grown ou uoulrrigated laud. Wenatohea also has a lino exhibit of fruit, grain and hops, which is in charge of U. II. FairwelJ, U. Brown and W. 'Turucr. One of the best exhibits of green fruit is that from the Vaklma district, in charge ot W. 8. Wright and Wil liam Lee. In the exhibit of fruit are 71 boxes of choice apples, almost an equal number of peaches, plums and pears, and a box of onions. The on ions average about two aud ono half pounds each, the largest weighing a trifle over three pounds. The exhibit also slncludes a tine showing of 20 varieties of grapes. The entire space aken by the ex hi lit will make a good showing n tbe race for the chamber of commerce piie of ,r,000. More than 300 animals are entered In the four principal .depaitmeuts of the livestock exhibit, including Mil cattle, 50 horses, 70 sheep and W hogs. The poultry .department Is the most complete in the histoiy of the fair. Fruit monopolizes the 'main exhi bition building to a large extent, and rarely, If ever, has the exhibit been surnaMiid In any section of the Unit ed States or at any exposition. The aft la u It oral exhibit is scarcely less wonderful. l)y day aud night the home Indus try building is in the center ot atti ac tion. One of the most ititeicsting fMt urM of this building Is the hatch ing Of chickens ill Incubators. The 150,000 club has au Interesting exhilu It, consisting of a collection ot art I oleN manufactured In Hpokane, lnciud tog prtty nearly everthing from baby axf (o a tombatoue. A marble bust ol FrMideut McKiniey is a feature ot (bi.xliiblt. lh midway consists of 15 dillerent bowl, of Which the circus is the most pretention. Probably the most liltmtluf aid i bits are t.h liaby incu bators, in which are two thriving hit tllM. I'ur' air is nn absolute necessity, and no effort should be spared to keep it so in every house. Where open-flame illuniinants rob the air of oxiren and turn it into carbonic acid gas, pure air is nn impossibility. Air poisoned by the flame of a gas jet, or that of an oil lamp is unfit for breathing purposes and exercises a decidedly injurious effect upon the occupant of the room. Electric Light burning in an air-tight bulb leaves the nir of the room pure and fresh, and furnishes a better, brighter and safer light than any other medium.
