Republican Candidate for United States Senator.
CHAMPION OF STATEMENT ONE.
Jonathan Bourne, Jr., candidate before the Republican primaries fur the
nomination of United States Senator in C'ongreea, for the lung term coiumencinK
March 4th, 1907, wai born in New Bedford, Maes., February 23d, 1855; was a
member of the data of 1877 at Harvard University j came to Portland May 10th,
,1878; was a Republican member of the Oregon Legislature in the session of 1885
and the extra session of 1880; was one of Oregon's delegates to the Republican
National Convention ofl888 and Oregon's member of the Republican Natlunal
Committee from 1888 to 1802, and a delegate to the Republican National Con
vention of 1802; and was elected as a Mitchell Republican to the Oregon Legisla
ture in 1890. ,
Mr. Bourne has been more prominently idnetifled with the development of
the mineral resources of Oregon than any other man in the state, having expen
ded In the last twenty years over $1,000,000 of his own money in the acquisition
and development of Oregon mines.
While Mr. Bourne has had bis residence and main office at Portland since
1878, lie has had another office at New Bedford, Muss,, and has carried on the
business of his father's estate since 1889, which makes him familiar with many
of the large interests and leading men of the East. These qualifications, in con
junction with bis tremendous euergy, origlanilty, executive ability and exper
ience in business and political affairs pre-eminently qualify him for making an
able and influential Senator for the State of Oregon.
Mr. Bourne has always favored extending the direct power of the people over
their government as far as possible. lie was one of the leading spirits in the
Initiative and Referendum movement from 1890 until it was approved by the
voters at the June election In 1902. In 1004 he was a member of the executive
committee of the Direct Primary Nominations League, and holds the samo pos
ition with the People's Power League at this time. In all these movements he
has been one of the few to guarantee the necessary expenses of preparing and
proposing their measures to the people. '
a saya that the choice of United States Senator should be , by direct vote of
the people, and that the Legislature should be compelled to elect the man the
people select. To accomplish this result, he is championing Statement No. 1 of
the primary elections law as the only method by which 'public opinion may be
crystallised and made effective upon the Legislature.
In bis petition for nomination be says: - - , "
"If I am nominated and elected I will, during my term
of office, favor:

Below will be found a well written
and business like aiticle espousing
the cause of tbe new county wbicb
ooutains arguments In its favor that
cannot be assailed. It is as follows:
Editor Glacier : Sinoe political dis
cussions are in order, a few words on
tbe situation may aot be amies. For
the last 15 years tbe people of Hood
River valley have been to a greater or
less extent discussing tbe proposition
of creating new county oat of the
western Dortion of Wasco county. The
topography of the oonnty, tbe indus
tries and climatic conditions are suob
that our interest are somewhat at va-
rieuoe with tbe eastern portion of
Wasco county. Taxpayers : are also
well aware of tbe fact that there bas
alse been an almost steady Increase in
valuations and consequently -a larger
ti in this end of tbe said county for
a number of years past, nor have we
any assurance tbat tbis tax Increasing
process will be lessened in the future.
We believe tbat we are big enough and
strong enough to walk alone and at
no greater expense, to say tbe least,
tbau if remain a part of said ooun
tr. In faot we feel confident that we
oan carry on tbe business of Cascade
oounty If It should be created, nt a
less expense than If we stay in tbe
present county, especially it we take
Into i uii-iideration the benefits we
would iteeive by having our oonnty
business attended to at tbe town oi
Hood River, Oregou.
We would not need an expensive
court bouse for several years to come,
nor would we ueed to pay as large sal
aries to the iuouuibenU ol the county
olllces in tbe new county as they are
receiving at tbis time. VI course, 1
believe tbe laborer is worthy of his
hire, but tbe work in some depart
ments would be less, for some time to
come, in tbe new oounty.
Have we no local under (Jan we
not see tbat oounty headuartera locat
ed at Hood River would bring in and
keep more money in circulation right
nere at homer rue olty ol Mood Kiv
er now bas a population of nearly
18)00. It will continue to grow for
many years in influence and wealth.
The valley of Hood River will further
add to its world renowned reputa
tion for the produotlon of the finest
apples and strawberries. Its health
giving climate, its flowing springs of
the purest water, its panoramio view
of mountains and rivers is a soul-inspiring
delight as well as those who
live within its borders.
Mr. Editor, I am in favor of and
will vote for Hon, A. A. Jayne for
representative in tbe loner house of
tbe Oregon legitd-i are. I will vote
for bim beouni-e 1 beileve he can do
more towards creating a new oounty
for us than hlv other man we can
send on this miftiive. Yours turely,
J. W. MORTON.
- Millionaire' I'oor Stomach.
The worn-out stomach of the over-fed
millionaire is often paraded in the pub

wealth. But millionaires are not the
only ones afflicted with bad stomachs.
l lie proportion is lar greater among the

rampant among these people, and they

"Men of Oregon, "be strong and
