Dueling aa II Wa In Kranre In th Tim of Itirfarlleu. Tbo passion for dueling, which bad cost France, it was said, between 7,000 and 8,000 lives during the twenty years of Henry IV.'i reign, was at Its height wben his son enmo to the throne. The council of Trent In 1545 bad solemnly condemned the practice of single combat, Impartially Includ ing principals, seconds and spectators In Its penalty of excommunication, la 1002 an edict of Henry pronounced the "damnable custom of dueling Intro duced by the corruption of the cen tury" to be the cause of so many pite ous accidents, to the extreme regret and displeasure of the king and to the Irreparable dumage of the state, "that we should count ourselves unworthy to bold the scepter if we delayed to repress the enormity of this crime." A wholo series of edicts followed to the sumo effect, but It was easier to make edicts than to enforce them, Degradation, imprisonment, confisca tion of property, loss of civil rights and death were the penalties attached to tho Infringement of the laws ngulnst dueling, and still the practice pre vailed. In 1020 IMchellcu published a milder form of prohibition, Tho first offense was no longer capital, a third ouly of the offender's property was to be confiscated, and the judges were permitted to recognize extenuating cir cumstances. A few months later the Com to de Boutevillo thought lit to test the min ister's patience in this direction. The Tlaco Itoyalo hud long been a favorite dueling ground, and Do Itoutevllle traveled from Iirusscls to fight his twenty-second duel here, In tho heart of Tarts, in deliberate defiance of the king's authority. The result was not encouraging. Montmorency though be was, the count went with his second to the scaffold, and the marked de crease from thut time in the number of duels may be uttrllmted either to the moderation used lu framing the law or to tho inexorable resolution with which It was enforced. Macmll- Inn's Magazine. BIRD JOURNEYS. mall Animal. Oftea Travel taa Bark ol tare Oaes. tt has often been asked how small and weak birds manage to fly such enormous distances when migrating. Aa a rule, however, small birds that have come very far across the sea have not flown, but have been blown over during violent gales, aud many of tbein arrive on land in a half dead condition. In fair weather small birds tuak long journeys successfully over con siderable tructs of ocean, but the rea son la that they are carried on th backs of the larger ones. When pass ing an autumn In Crete a writer as serts that he distinctly heard the twit tering of small birds when flocks of sand cranes were passing overhead on their way to southern shores. On an other occasion, wben firing a gun, h saw three small birds rise from tin flock and disappear again among the cranes. A native priest assured him that they came over from Europ with them, while it has been found that small birds, never before seen In certain parts, have been brought thith er at times of migration. Another cause Is that small birds do not mako their journeys in one flight They generally rest during the day, searching for food, and thus proceed to their destination by easy stages. THE PEARL WORKERS. RUSSIAN PROVERBS, Roguery is tho last of trades. Without cheating, no trading. Every fox praises his own tall. A debt Is adorned by puyment, A good beginning Is half tho work. Every Ilttlo frog Is great in his own bog. Trust In God, but do not stumble yourself. Go after two wolves and you will not catch even one. If Ood doesn't forsake us, tho pigs will not take us, Tho deeper you hldo anything the sooner you flud it. Be praised not for your ancestors, but for your virtues. Bend a pig to dinner and he will put his feet on the table. Dr. Holme' Itevenffe. When "Tho I.ust Leaf was publish ed by Oliver Wendell Holmes a critic attacked it savagely and cruelly. Dr. Holmes, though Importuned by friends, did nothing iu revenge. He waited for time to avenge him, which time did liberally. The critic fell upon evil days aud ended his existence with sui cide. The ouly morceau of personal revenge which Uie good doctor allowed himself was to cut out the paragraph about his enemy's career and paste It In his scrapbook on the same page which contained the original criticism and the announcements of the succes sive editions of tho poem. This was a wild revenge, but even this was un worthy of lr. Holmes. Seemed la Have Mini Cornered. The teacher was discounting to the class ou the wonders of nature. "Take the familiar illustration of the sting of a wasp," ho said, "as compared with the finest needle. When examined through a microscope the sting is still sharp, smooth and polished, while the necdlo appears blunt and rough. "It Is so with everything. Tho works of nature are infinitely superior to those of art Try how we may, we cannot improve on nature." "It isn't so with my eyes, teacher," said a little girl in tho class. "Why. how Is that, Nellie?" be osked. " 'Causo nature made me cross eyed," she said, "and the doctors fixed my eyes all right" A Reflection. Mother Well, what is It? The wise are Instructed by reason, ordinary minds by experience, tho stu pid by necessity and brutes by Instinct -Cicero. A Bethlehem Industry Which In rive Hundred Yeara Old, The chief industry of Bethlehem of Judaea Is that of the mother-of-pearl workers. The shells are brought from the Bed sea and in tho hands of native artisans are polished and carved, the larger into elaborate designs. The smaller are cut up for rosaries and crosses. The work Is all done by hand, aud the methods are amazingly primitive to a speotator from tho home of steam and electric power. But the results are extraordi nary. The largest shell we saw was carved la scenes from the birth of Christ, the agony in the garden and the crucifixion, and had the general ef fect of delicate frostwork. Under the magnifying glass every detail was seen to be perfect In outline and in finish. It was exueutod to order for a wealthy American and was to cost $180. About ISO people make a living by this Industry, which is 500 years old. In the shops the workmen sit upon the floor, their benches in front of them. The air is full of whitish dust, and the light admitted by the single window and the open door is ao dim that the exquisite tracery of the wrought shells Is a mystery even before the visitor notes how few, simple and crude are the Instruments employed. Marlon Harland In Llpplncott's. He la More Uaaatereaa Thaa the One Who Blaatere. The bad man of genuine sort rarely looked the part assigned to him In the popular Imagination. The long balred blusterer, adorned with a dialect that never was spoken, serves very well in eastern fiction about the west, but that la not the real thing. The most danger ous man was apt to be quiet and smooth spoken. When an antagonist blustered and threatened, the most dangerous bad man only felt rising In bis own soul, keen and stern, that strange exultation which often comes with combat for the man naturally brave. A western officer of established reputation once said to me while speak ing of a personal difficulty Into which he bad been forced: "I hadn't been In anything of that sort for years, and 1 wished I was out of It. Then I said to myself, 'Is It true that you are getting old and have lost your nerve? Then all ot once the old feeling came over me, and I was just like United to be. I felt calm and happy, and I laughed aft er that. I jerked my gun and shoved It into his stomach. He put up his hands and apologized. 'I will give you a hundred dollars now,' he said, 'if you will tell, me where you got that gun.' I suppose I was a trifle quick for him." St. Louis Post-Dlspntch. Root Do. of New York. There are dogs In New York that never set foot on the street. They be long to the janitors in the downtown buildings, and their runways consist of the roofs of the buildings In which their owners live and adjoining roofs on the same level. That is a rare day when the office worker on looking out of the sixteenth story window does not see half a dozen dogs romping about upon the roofs beneath hitu. There la one advantage at least In be ing a roof dog the dog catcher has no terrors for 1dm. Weather Report for February. The following; in the leporl of IT. K. Vnli u lary Weal her Otmerver D. N.
