Graham was called to Portland Tuesday by the sudden death of her father, Mr. Wood. He was ad vanced in years and has been iu poor health for some time, but it wns not expected that be would pass away so suddenly. Mrs. E. Clark entertained about thirty ladies at her home Tuesday af tornoou at a thimble party. Pleasant social intercourse was enjoyed by those present aud Inter dainty refresh ments were served, terminating a very ploasaut afternoon. Mrs. 13. L. Smith will addross the lli'jh School pupils on Lincoln's birth day ou tho subject of the martyied president's life. It was expected that Mr. Smith would speak ou that day, but be is to attend a banquet iu honor of Lincoln to be hold in Portland iu he eveuiug and will be unable to do so. Box Factory Will Start March 1st. The box factory of the Davidson Fruit Company will be started up March 1st., in order to supply the de mand for strawberry crates. About 60,000 crates will be mauufactuted as a first installment aud more as the de mand makes necessary. The ice plant of the company will alsA oommeuce on that date to supply parties wishing ioe in auy quantity. HOOD RIVER CITIZENS HAVE NARROW ESCAPE The residents of this city were thrown into anxiety and excitement about 8 o'clock Tuesday morning by the announcement that the Spokane Flyer bad been wrecked at Bridal Veil and several persons killed and a num ber Injured. It was Known mat mere were a number of Hood River people ou the train and until wcrd was re ceived to the contrary it waa feared that some of them niiabt be among the victims. It proved, however, that none of tbein were Injured and a sign of relief went up from theii anxiom relatives and friends. ' The accident wai caused by the ft nlfln KxDress running into the rear end of the Hiiokane train while It was standing at Bridal Veil waiting for a small wreck to be cleared away be twHfln there and Iroutdale. Xbe eugl neer of the colliding train saw the aianal from the Uasnian of the train utiflRd in time to stoo. but waa pre vented from doing so by an accident to the injector pipe which burst Just aa be came in slant of the elgnal, sending clouds of scalding steam into the cab and driving nun ana toe nre- mnn from their pouts. The engine struck the rear Pullman of the train at full speed and reduced It to matchwood, killing four persons and injuring two otDers so seriously that It is feared thev mar die. In the forward part of the train were a number of Hood River passengers inoluding II. K Davidson, E. A. II. J. Oosslina. U. D. Wood- worth. Miss Eva Nickalsen and her mother, Mr. Emstrum, Mr. Heaton, Jack Bugley, D. Ecoles of the Ore iron Lumber Company and Dr. 11, Dudley I'lneo, Mr. woodworm's nephew. With the exception of Mr. Eocles and Messrs. I'eatou.Uagley and Emstrum, the rest of the Hood River pasaengors were all in one oar. The former gentleman was iu one of the Pullmans and the latter in the smoker. Mr. (lessling and Mr. Davidson were sitting in the same seat when the orasb came and were thrown violently against the seat in front of tbem and while both of them felt no serious effects from it at the time tbey after wards discovered that they were quite badlv bruised. Mr. Uessling bad sug nested that thev go baok into the Pullman that was wrecked when they boarded the tr iln here, but Mr. Da vldson rather objected and tbey took seat in the day coach an action that no douht saved their lives. Mr. Kianzand Mr. Woodwortb witb stood the shock without any dirJicul tv. but Dr. Fineo who was sleeping, was thrown over the back of the seat in front of him. where he landed on bis shoulders. Luckily be waa not hurt and immediately got out of the oar and went back aud rendered every assistauco in his power In looking aft er the in in red. Mr. Franz also did veoman service In allying the suffer lug of the injured, as did many others of the Hood River party. The first relief train to arrive at the scene of the wreck waa the one sent out from Hood River witb Dra. Bro sl'is, Watt and Humble ou board, and thev were the first to give the Injured surgical aud medical attention. The physicians from here received muoh commendation for the prompt and efficient servloe they rendered. The scenes about the wrecked train are said to have been most d 1st rest Inn. and some of our townameu were unable to stay in the vicinity of t' irrnwaome spectacle. While it was expected that some of the Hood River passengers who were on the wrecked truin would return on the No. 2 in order to quiet the fears of their friends, tbey did not do so, but went on to Portland, returning on trains the next day.
