A FINE TRIBUTE
FOR HOOD RIVER
PROF. VAN DEMAN WRITES OF US
"Jiowhere Else In the World," Snys He,
"Are Sneh Perfect Apples Grown."
Prof. Van Demau la out with an
other article about apple culture lu
Hood River valley. His remarks
show that he has made a careful study
of the conditions here, and he gives
the growers many compliments tor
their treatment of the fruit industry.
In part tbe aiticle Is as follows:
In traveling over the country.
looking at the various phai-es of fruit
growing, there are mauy wiinn that 1
have seen that hare taught me lissons
well worth heoding. One that was
more deeply impiessed on my mind
than ever, was the profit from doing
things well, from what 1 saw on the
Pacitlo coast the past season. It whn
my privilege to be able to visit nearly
all of the leading fruit sections in
Oregon aud VYushiugton during the
summer and fall of tbe roar jiiht past
and an account nf what I tmv and
learned may tit of use to othor fruit
growers and packers.
Two visits o.e tmide, several
weeka apart, to the famous Hood
Kiver section; one before the main
gathering time aud tho otliot- just af
tor tha fruit crop hud been nearly nil
gathered. It may be well to say Unit
t e Hood River valley is not u vulley,
such as many might suppose, love
aud treeless, or covered with sane
bruBh, as are many of the Far West
ern valleys, but a series of elevated
plateaus, some IKK) to 1.000 or more
feet above the Columbia river, which
flow along its northern end. There
are gome small hills aud numerous un
dulations , with many stretches of al
most level land ; making iiieul locu
tions for fruit farms. It in hemmed
in the east and west by ranu'os of very
high hills that aro almost mountains,
and to the north some 50 milrs across
tbe border liue of Washington, stands
Mount Adams, while to tho southward
la Mount Hood, like two giant mow-
clad aeutinols, watching over the
sleeping valleys which they overlook.
Hood Kiver aud its upper tributaries
flow rapidly northward from the
snow banks aud glaciors of Mount
Hood, through the center of the val
ley, until the crystal wulors sre lost
in those of the Columbia. I hero is
no more beautiful us well us prolita-
ble section for fruit growing. Some
of the land la heavily timbered, but
much of it ia partially covered with
trees and brush. While tho applo is
tbe main crop of that region, thore
are other fruits that succeed there
very well and are grown to some ex
tent. The strawberry is, next to the
apple, the one that ia grown more
generally than any other; und while
there is no serious ditliciilly iu grow
ing nearly all the ordinary varieties,
tbe Clarke is the one that far exceeds
all others in popularity. It hoimiib to
suit tbe conditions there perfectly and
tbe fruit growors want no other. In
tbe markets as far east as Chicago tho
Hood Kiver strawberries meet with
ready sale at prices that pay the
growers well. They aro well organized
and tbe grading, packing and mar
keting are all done under the direc
tion of those skilled in tbe respective
parts of the business to which each is
especially suited. This close alien
tion to the details und united cll'nrt

crop is fully a a important, as the fav
orable natur 1 conditions for growing
it, aud has as much or mom to do in
aeouriug the fancy prices that it
brings.
"The apples of Hood Kiver me not

where that I have seen do apple trees

be more healthy. The nit is cool
enough, aud not too cool, din ing the
growing aud ripening season. The
most difficult to grow of all varieties
of tbe applo, such as the Newtown
and Esopus ISpitzeubeig aro produced
there almost with tho i-aiiie cane as
Ben Davis; and as they bring the
highest price in market of nil apples,
tbey are grown at Hood Kiver more
than any others. Indeed, they are
coming to be the special! ios of that
section. Xhe entire crop of these two
varieties was sold this year at the
highest flguio evor paid for so largo
an amount, to fur to 1 have heard,
ranging from ?2..')0 to ftoi per ho
pound box. f"o. b., at llnml Kiver
station. Thin't of it, fruit growers ol
the Kast. 'i'liey got us much per

barrel for your best apples. It is Miid
by aome that the Western fruit grow
ers are far from unu Lot. How far
away wben tho New York buyers will
go thero and pay tbe.-o farcy prices
at their doors? It co.-U ."iO cents per
box to cultivate, spray, gather, pack
and deliver the apples ut the statiun,
ao several of the growers told nie,
and it is easy to figure out the net
profits per box. lu additou to this
it may be suld that 0HI boxes per acre
ia not unusual iu orchards two years
set.
'But these profitable returns are not
obtained by the let alone method or
even by the grass mulch method
The orchards are tilled to a finish, the
trees are sprayed repeatedly, late as
well as early, for tho codling moth is
bad there ami during a longer season
than tbe Kai-tern states. Tha fruit is
wiped after gathering and sorted aud
packed by experts. No one is allow
ed to grade or puck his owu upples,
for be might not I jo strict emmgn
about it. Would not this work havoc
in some of the apple barrels of the
Eastern packers? Where is the one
wbo would risk a Hood Kiver packer
to go through bis stock? No, they
would rather run the risk of being do
teoted iu poor grading und fraudulent
packing than to permit any such
thing. And, they generally get the
cull price and richly doserve it. This
is the lesson that Hood Kiver fruit
should teach us. Good culture, thor-
otigh spraying, and clog-" aud scrupu
lously honest grading and packing.
This would bring about a revolution
iu uet returns. Will it ever be?

PEOPLE WANT
COUNTY DIVIDED
UNITED MOVEMENT TO THAT END
Increase in Population and tireat In
dustrlal Development Call For
Count j Seat Nearer
Ita Heart
At a meeting held in this city last
Saturday afternoon an informal or
ganization was effected for furthering
a cause which is fraught with greater
benefits for the residents and taxpay
ers of Hood Kiver valley and the wes
tern end of Wasco oounty than any
movemeut that has ever been project
ed. We say auy movement that baa
ever been projected, but we slightly
err in the statement, as it was pro
jected onoe before aud failed.
The movement iu question la not a
secret, for we think that it is by this
time in the mind aud on tbe tongue
of almost every man in Hood Kiver
valley, and Is in short the division of
Wasco oounty, with tbe dividing line
between Moaior and The Dalles.
This Is not a new question, as bag
been stated, but to reiterate it, is one
iu which every mau who has the best
interest of tbe section named at heart
Is vitally interested.
The meeting was representative and
from those who were present informa
tion and enoouragemeut was given
that pointed to the fact that the pro
ject is being received with not only
encouragement, but enthusiasm, Irre
spective ot political affiliations, which
la just what tbe legion or ir lends ot
the division of the oounty want, and
also just what will bring it to a suc
cessful issue.
While the meeting wai instigated
and took place iu this city, it is the
Intention to consult wltn and ask tbe
support of all tbe outlying townships
w,hioh will become part of the new
oounty if established and to which the
benefits oannot help but be equally as
great as to Hood Kiver valley.
In the coming campaign more win
be the usual political affiliations and
the equally usual political ties which
few want to ind many cannot nrean.
The friends of oounty division are
not asking any political sacrifices, but
tbey do ask that every one support
the movement. Tbey ask it because
tbey think it is their right to promote
what seems to tbe majority, ana is
undoubtedly so, the best interests of
the citizens wbo would comprise what
would be known as Casoade oounty.
The rapidly increasing population,
the great increase in valuation of
property, immense development In
business resources aud an industrial
growth that has no equal in any other
section of this state outside ot Port
land, all call for tbe location of a
oounty seat nearer to the heart of ita
activity,
"Time is money," so it is said, and
to have a oounty seat located at Hood
Kiver would be the saving of much
time to tbe busy citizens ot the coun
try oontigious to it, who are foro'd to
make long journeys over oounur
roads with a railroad ride of aome
length at the end of it. It would
mean not only a saving of time to res
idents in Hood Kiver valley, but a
saving of both time and mileage to the
residents of the west end of the pres
eut oounty and a gieater convenience
and benefit to all concerned.
The time was rtoe for county divis
ion some time ago, but it has become
now almost au absolute necessity and
the unanimous call from all parts of
tho section interested has caused tbe
Ulaoier to beoome ita champion.
At the last session of tbe legislature
tbe wishes of the citizens of this end
of the oounty, while they failed of at
tainment, were so nearly successful
that It is thought that ry putting tne
matter in its true light before the
members of that body again and
showing it that the desire is unani
mous for oounty division, tnat every
member wbo believes iu the right of
the majority to rule will feel compell
ed to support tbe measure.
Tbe time is last approaoning wnen
the voters will be called on to present
the names of tbe men tbey feel are
best qualified to represent the will ot
the majority iu publio offices. Tbe
direct primary law la in tbe nature of
an experiment. Few seem to under
stand it and it would be well for every
one interested to look into the matter
and make no mistakes. The suooess
of the plan to create a new oounty
must depend largely on a successful
application of the new law and means
a full and thorough registration. It
also means going to tbe polls on elec
tion day with a solid front aud the un
derstanding that you are going to
cast your vote ou that day for the
candidate who has pledged himself to
use bis utmost endeavors in securing
a new oounty.
To this end and iu order that an
effective organization may be bad we
ask that the friends of tbe n ovement
urge the voters to register early and
thus get out tho full strength of tbe
vote. Various suggestions have been
made aa to formally opening tbe cam
paign so as to have all the districts
completely In touch with each othor,
but it is tbe wisli ot tne citizens ot
Hood Kiver that the outlying towns
select a delegation that can attend a
meeting to be held in this city at some
date to be named In the near future
aud that they communicate itb either
P. S. Davidson, chairman, or S. F.
Fouts, secretary, of the Cascade
County Association.

Editor Glacier: Lying here on the
flat of my back in the hospital, I read
with great pleasure of the successful
banquet given by the Hood River

unity there shown, making the club
stand for the whole Hood River val

Among the good work being done I
notice also a plan to get a rock

me in ou that proposition. I will
stand my share of the expense.
