. A. R. and W. S. C. Installation.
Hood River, January 14, 1906. Ed
itor Glacier : As a guest at the) ban
quet given by the ladies of Canny Post
W. K. I'., wnicn preoeeaea me instal
lation exercises last Saturday, - will
you kindly allow me apace in your
valuable paper to tell of some things
that transpired and how the ladies
acted well their parts ,iu every partic
ular. In the first place, while the dinner
was hi process of preparation, the
cook stove fell down. The coffee and
the beans, a big pot of the latter,
came down with the store and were
spread over the floor. Consternation
prevailed. During the excitement,
while Mrs. Shoemaker wm trying to
save some of the beans, someone ac
cidental whacked her on the nose
with a stove lid and out gash that
necessitated a patch of court plaster.
Captain Dukes was "Johnny on the
spot" and helped to straighten things
out so that there wm very little delay
In servlns dinner on time. Luckily
there were other batches of beans so
that there wm no shortage of this
necessary vegetable at en old soldier's
banquet. Wood being scarce, Captain
Dukes had to forage, around the back
varda in the neighborhood and pro
cured some old packing boxes. Right
here your correspondent would like
to ask why the management of the K.
ot P. hall allowed the wood box to be
empty when tbey knew the ladies of
the corps were to serve ainner ana
that the rooms had to be heated on
that day? The cooks of the corps al
so found the dishes left In very un
satisfactory manner by the party who
had previously need tnem. The old
storve should be relegated end an up-
to-date cooking range would be the
proper thing for use of the ladies of
the different (organizations who fre
quently serve dinners and suppers In
this ban.
At a few minutes past 12 o'clock
dinner was announced. Two long
tables were filled with edibles of the
kind that Hood River women are not
ed for serving, and the old army bean
wm served in the style dear io the
appetite of the old soldier. For some
reason the men were all seated at one
table, while the women occupied the
other. Kev.J.w.mgDy was called up
on to ask blessing and responded
In eloauent words. Fair women wait
ed npon the tables and saw to it that
every one sot bis full share of the
good things. There were no after
dinner speeches, probably for toe
reason that the old boys of the Grand
Army were too full for utterance.
At 2 o'clock all gathered In the large
hall used by the W. R. C. The instal
lation sxercises ot the post were first
oonduoted. Captain A. S. Blowers,
senior post commander of Can by post,
was installing officer for the post.
Captain Blowers makes a good presid
ing otfioer and the old veterans of the
post were prompt, so that proceedings
passed off without a hitch. All the
new otfioers were present to be in
stalled. Colonel a A. Skinner is the
new post commander. He is the
youngest man In the post, is said to
be a bachelor, and in this respect does
not follow up the precepts of our pres
ident But no doubt be has great re
spect for Roosevelt, and there is hope
for him yet. At the conclusion of the
service, Colnel Skinner thanked the
installing omoer for the emotent man
ner In which be had oonduoted the
proceedings, and then announced
that the W. R. C. offloer Installation
wm in order.
The ladies ot the oorns at once took
the floor at eommand of the retiring
president, Mrs. A. S. Blowers. The
Installing otfioer waaannouuoed at the
door of the anti-room, and the con
ductor and the four flag bearers were
commanded to escort her to the altar,
where she wm introduced and saluted,
and thenoejto the president's ohalr.
The retiring president presented the
installing omoer, Mrs. IS. t bhoe
maker, with the gavel, the emblem of
authority in parli men tary usage. The
installing omoer snowed nersell to be
master of the situation and took bold
of the work aa if it wm of every day
occurence. Her every command wm
executed by the conductor and four
Hag bearers in a way that showed per
fect discipline. Every movement on
the floor waa accompanied by appro
priate muBlo on the piano. The lad
ies showed their hearts were in the
work. The esprit de corps of the W.
R. 0. of Hood River is the admira
tion of all the comrades of Canby
Post. At the conclusion of the ser
vices the new ptesident, Mrs. J. L.
Blount, called upon the old soldiers
for remarks, several of whom respond
ed In fitting words mostly in praise of
the excellent work of the W. R. 0.
The new president and the new com
mander Doth promised in tneir re
marks to do their level best to make
this the banner year in the work of
the W. R. O. and U. A. R. and every
one that heard their remarks believes
they will make good their word.
Ibe servloes were putiiio and quite
a number of outsiders aooepted the in
vitation to be present and tbey are
glad they did to.
A Bare Treat.
Those of our people who were for
tunate enonsh to be present at the
entertainment given by the Polmatler
Sisters at the opera House Saturday
evening under the auspices of the K.
or r. lodge, witnessed one oi the fin
est performances of its kind that ever
made its appearance in xiooa xtiver.
Each of these sisters Is a finished ar
tist on her Instument, and the vocal
numbers were exceptionally pleasing.
Mr. llHohoook as a monologist wm
away above the ordinary and pleased
the audience immensely. Uls char
acterization of the old minister watoh
ing his boy in a foot ball game wm
superb and was thoroughly enjoyed
by those in attendance.
J. he audtenoe was exceedingly sum
and 'twM a pity that our people did
not more generally realize what a Due
attraction it was and greet the Sisters
with an audience in keeping with Uie
entertainment.
It seems that the people have been
fooled so often in attractions that
have appeared here that tbey are wil
ling to miss a good entertainment
rather than ran the risk of striking a
poor performance.
At any rate the majority or tne
theatre going Inhabitants missed
something out of the ordinary
when tbey failed to be present and
hear the Polmatler Sisters.
Has Not Forgotten Hood Rivers
Bnlow we print a letter from A. A.
Graham, who formerly lived in Hood
Ktver and went away zor nis neann.
Mr. Graham is well known here and
that he bus not forgotten Hood River
is evidenced from his communication
wbioh reads as follows :
The Hood River Glacier.
Uei.tlemen : Send the Ulaoier to my
address. 712 West 3rd st., LosiAngeles,
California and oblige. I cannot do
without the Glacier. 1 want to read
about my good Hood River frieuds.
Want to read in the Ulaoier all about
that "wish bone frnit olty" happen
ings and the world's famous apple and
strawberry country. I want to adver
tise it m much as possible and will do
so by keeping your exoellent up-to-
oow Ulaoier on display so as ail wno
pass by may read.
Hood River la well advertised down
this way, and all easterners that I
have talked with know or the iiooa
River country. This Is quite a good
country, but "the" country is the
raoino JNortDwest, . tne oia uregon
oountry. The warm winter climate
here is all tnat noids me. wm stay
here a year or two, then' work to the
racino Northwest, "wnere koiib tne
Mighty Oregon."
"Onward, on rolling uregon. Tea;
keep on, keep on rolling on and on."
This Is the "olty or tne Angeis."
The Angels, however, are not as pretty
as the Hood River girls.
I wish the Glacier and all liood
Rlverites a happy new year. Yours,
ALBKKT A1NSUH UKA11AM,
Busy All Along the Line.
The railroad contractors are now
Setting busy all along the line. There
i one camp at the Straight place
about three miles above Bingen, an
other is about to be established on
the Henderson place and still another
at or near Bingeu. Those three with
the one Just below white tsaimon is
getting them in pretty thick and ought
to show speedy results. Ed Suksdorf
has a oontrrxt for clearing a consider
able of the right of way along the line
and bM a gang of men outting and
burning brush and trees along the
line. White Salmon Enterprise.
Big Butte, the historic old moun
tain just west of Butte, Montanna,
which pieices the sky at an altitude
of about 9,000 feet, a land mark and
after which Butte wm named, has
been sold for 33 and one third eenta
at a delinquent tax sale. The proper
ty wm bid in and only after the map
bad been consulted wm it known that
the tmountain had gone for a third
of dollar.
